Arnold hits go-ahead 2-run HR in 8th inning, Wright State beats ETSU 7-5 at Nashville Regional
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Luke Arnold hit the last of Wright State's four home runs — a go-ahead two-run shot in the eighth inning — and the No. 4 seed Raiders beat East Tennessee State 7-5 in a loser-out game at the Nashville Regional on Saturday night. Wright State (39-19) plays the loser between Louisville and No. 1 national seed and host Vanderbilt, which rallied to beat the Raiders 4-3 on Friday. Advertisement In the eighth, Boston Smith hit a one-out single off Brady Frederick (8-2) and Arnold hit the next pitch over the wall in left-center field to cap the scoring. Gus Gregory hit a solo shot in the first, Smith led off the second with another homer off ETSU starter Michael Harpster and Will Cook's two-run double made it 4-0. Jamie Palmese hit a two-out, three-run home run in the fourth and JD Yakubinis and Cody Miller led off the fifth with back-to-back homers that gave ETSU a 5-4 lead. Patrick Fultz tied it with a two-out solo shot for Wright State in the seventh. The Buccaneers (41-17) set a program record with 121 home runs this season — the third most in Southern Conference history — and shattered the previous record for home runs in a season of 93, set in 2010. Gray Fossil Site celebrates 25-year anniversary
GRAY, Tenn. (WJHL) – What started as a small discovery in 2000 is now a popular attraction in the Tri-Cities. 25 years after that discovery, the Gray Fossil Site continues to evolve, with new discoveries every day. On Saturday, the Fossil Site kicked off its 25th anniversary celebration, a milestone many couldn't believe had already arrived. 'Most people are like, 'No way, I can't believe it's been 25 years since that time,'' said Executive Director Blaine Shubert. 'But to really update the public on all of the amazing discoveries that we've actually had and also showcase some of the new exhibits we've developed, too.' Throughout the event, ETSU Paleontology students, fossil site employees and volunteers presented their research to the public. Schubert said with the recent addition of the Hands On! Discovery Center, the site has evolved into a place of learning for all. 'So you have these two entities in one place and an academic program to where the students are getting to be involved in not only things like excavation, but building exhibits, doing outreach programs here at the museum,' he said. 'And so we just continue to grow and diversify.' Recent ETSU graduate and Collections Assistant Derek Den Ouden said he's thankful to have been a part of the site's 25-year history. 'It's been really fantastic and awesome to be a part of the broader gray fossil site experience and contribute my name to the legacy that we've established over the past 25 years,' he said. Now that the site has reached the 25-year milestone, Den Ouden said he's excited to see what the next 25 years will bring. 'We're always digging and there's always some surprise,' he said. 'So I'm really hopeful that we'll find some really exceptional stuff in the next 25 years.' Schubert said Saturday's event is the kick-off for a year-long celebration. Louisville hits 3 home runs, rolls to 8-3 win over ETSU in Nashville Regional
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Lucas Moore and Matt Klein hit two-run home runs, Eddie King Jr. added a solo shot and Louisville defeated ETSU 8-3 on Friday in the Nashville Regional. ETSU's Cody Miller and Klein swapped two-run dingers in the third inning. From there, Cardinals' pitchers Patrick Forbes and Brennyn Cutts shut down the Buccaneers on three hits. The Cardinals (36-21) face the winner of top-seeded Vanderbilt versus Wright State on Saturday after ETSU (41-16) plays the loser. Forbes (3-2) went six innings, striking out 13, a Louisville postseason record, while walking four and giving up two hits. Cutts earned his first save, allowing the home run and striking out five. Louisville, in the NCAA Tournament for the 15th time, picked up a pair of runs in the fourth before Klein and King homered in the fifth. After Miller's home run the Buccaneers didn't get another hit until Tristan Curless had a solo shot in the eighth. Carter Fink (6-5) gave up six runs on five hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings for ETSU, which won the Southern Conference Tournament for the first time to make its first NCAA Tournament since 2013 and fifth overall. ___ AP college sports:
