Gray Fossil Site celebrates 25-year anniversary
On Saturday, the Fossil Site kicked off its 25th anniversary celebration, a milestone many couldn't believe had already arrived.
'Most people are like, 'No way, I can't believe it's been 25 years since that time,'' said Executive Director Blaine Shubert. 'But to really update the public on all of the amazing discoveries that we've actually had and also showcase some of the new exhibits we've developed, too.'
Throughout the event, ETSU Paleontology students, fossil site employees and volunteers presented their research to the public. Schubert said with the recent addition of the Hands On! Discovery Center, the site has evolved into a place of learning for all.
'So you have these two entities in one place and an academic program to where the students are getting to be involved in not only things like excavation, but building exhibits, doing outreach programs here at the museum,' he said. 'And so we just continue to grow and diversify.'
Recent ETSU graduate and Collections Assistant Derek Den Ouden said he's thankful to have been a part of the site's 25-year history.
'It's been really fantastic and awesome to be a part of the broader gray fossil site experience and contribute my name to the legacy that we've established over the past 25 years,' he said.
Now that the site has reached the 25-year milestone, Den Ouden said he's excited to see what the next 25 years will bring.
'We're always digging and there's always some surprise,' he said. 'So I'm really hopeful that we'll find some really exceptional stuff in the next 25 years.'
Schubert said Saturday's event is the kick-off for a year-long celebration.

"There are really rabbits with what look like tentacles growing out of them," USA Today reported. What gives? Why do the rabbits have horns? Photos of the horned rabbits have emerged online. Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirms that rabbits can have "black nodules on the skin, usually the head," noting that "growths can sometimes become elongated, taking on a horn‐like appearance." Rabbits With 'Tentacles' Were Seen in Fort Collins, CO The rabbits caused a stir when they were spotted in Fort Collins, CO, according to the Coloradan. They've been dubbed "Frankenstein rabbits" by USA Today. "Cottontail rabbits with horn-like growths on their heads have appeared in Fort Collins in recent weeks," the site wrote on Aug. 13. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife discusses the virus on its website section about cottontail rabbits. "Rabbit papillomas are growths on the skin caused by the cottontail rabbit papillomavirus. The growths have no significant effects on wild rabbits unless they interfere with eating/drinking," it reads. The news freaked some people out online. The Rabbit Virus Isn't Harmful to Humans, Officials Say "Most infected cottontails can survive the viral infection, after which the growths will go away. For this reason, CPW does not recommend euthanizing rabbits with papillomas unless they are interfering with the rabbit's ability to eat and drink." Colorado Parks and Wildlife says the rabbit virus isn't harmful to humans. "Like other papillomaviruses, this virus is specific to rabbits and does not cause disease in other species," the agency wrote. "There is a risk of transmission to domestic rabbits, especially if rabbits are housed outdoors where they may contact wild rabbits or biting insects. Paleontologists Discover Weird ‘Pokémon' Ancestor of Modern Whales
Researchers have named a bizarre, prehistoric species of whale discovered on a beach in Australia. Janjucetus dullardi 'might have looked for all the world like some weird kind of mash-up between a whale, a seal, and a Pokémon,' according to Erich Fitzgerald, a senior paleontologist at Museums Victoria Research Institute who co-authored the paper on the discovery. Measuring less than ten feet and roaming the oceans around 25 million years ago, the underwater beasts would have boasted bulbous eyes the size of tennis balls, razor-sharp teeth, and a pointed snout. Fitzgerald adds they may also even have had 'tiny little nubbins of legs just projecting as stumps from the wall of the body.' The first specimen, comprising a partial skull with ear bones and teeth, was found in 2019 by amateur fossil hunter Ross Dullard, a school principal after whom the species has now been named. Dullard says he plans to host a fossil party to celebrate the naming over the weekend. 'That's taken my concentration for six years,' he said. 'I've had sleepless nights. La Verne family shocked when mountain lion wanders through front door of their home
A La Verne family had quite the surprise on Saturday when a mountain lion sauntered through their front door. The Tenney family says that it happened some time in the early afternoon, when their door was open because their family dog, Bandit was out front. They said it immediately became spooked upon entering the home, bolted out the backdoor and into the pool before it ran away. "As soon as I got to the front door, I heard a crash out the back, splash in the pool," said Jeff Tenney. "Cat was in the pool, jumped over the fence and was gone." Tenney said that no one in the home ever felt threatened by the big cat, and that Bandit slept through the entire incident. He did say that one pool toy was damaged as the cat rushed to flee from their yard.
