Joe Root becomes England's top run-getter in ODIs with a match-winning century against West Indies
Joe Root Synopsis Joe Root's unbeaten 166 propelled England to a thrilling three-wicket victory over West Indies in Cardiff, securing an unassailable ODI series lead. Root's record-breaking innings, featuring 21 fours and two sixes, saw him surpass Eoin Morgan to become England's leading ODI run-scorer, reaching 7,000 runs. He also scored his 18th ODI century. Joe Root broke multiple records as he scored an unbeaten 166 runs off 131 balls, including 21 fours and two sixes against West Indies at Cardiff to help England chase 309 runs in the second ODI. ADVERTISEMENT Root became the first England batter to reach 7,000 ODI runs going past Eoin Morgan's mark of 6957 runs. The former World Cup winning captain has a total of 7,701 runs in ODIs, but the remainder of those came during his time at Ireland. Root also went past the 7,000-run mark in 168 innings, becoming the fifth quickest to do the same after Hashim Amla (150 innings), Kane Williamson (159), Virat Kohli (161) and AB de Villiers (166). Batting at 3 after losing both openers for a duck, Root registered his 18th ODI century off 96 deliveries. This was also his career best score and the first century against West Indies in the format. Root, with 13,006 Test runs, is also the highest scorer for England in the longest format as well. Earlier, Keacy Carty's century got West Indies to 308 all out. This was his third ton in four matches. Adil Rashid picked up four wickets, while Saqib Mahmood got three. ADVERTISEMENT England were reduced to 133/5 at one stage but Root navigated the chase to give his team a three-wicket win and gain an unassailable lead in the three-match ODI series.
