Work on four-lane road to Alagarkovil to be completed by Nov
Madurai: State public works department (PWD) minister E V Velu on Wednesday inspected road development work for the Melur-Alagarkovil Road expansion to reduce traffic congestion on the major road connecting Alagarkovil hill, where the famous Sundararaja Perumal (Kallazhagar) Temple is located. The work is being undertaken at Rs221 crore under the chief minister's road development programme. Melur-Alagarkovil Road gets a lot of traffic daily, especially because of devotees visiting the Kallazhagar temple . Hence, it was planned and proposed to expand this existing two-lane, 3.14km long stretch from Kallandhiri bridge to Alagarkovil into four-lane to ease traffic congestion. Velu, who was accompanied by state commercial taxes minister P Moorthy, instructed officials to complete the work at the earliest and open the road for public use. Meanwhile, officials said that already two phases as part of the project in 2023 were completed at a cost of Rs20 crore each. In the first phase, a two-lane road connected Alagarkovil Road in Madurai city limits to the outskirts. The second phase consisted of a four-lane road that connected to Kallandhiri under Madurai rural district limits. Velu examined the model videos of the structure for the open air museum at Keeladi being established at a cost of 17.8 crores and instructed the officials to complete the works at the earliest. Meanwhile, Velu, Moorthy, and state IT minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan oversaw the work at Uthangudi for the DMK's upcoming general executive committee meeting to be held in Madurai on June 1.

New library will come up in Palayamkottai at Rs 100 crore: Minister E V Velu
TIRUNELVELI: Minister for Public Works Department E V Velu said that a public library at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore will soon be built at Palayamkottai. He was speaking to media persons after inspecting various developmental works in Tirunelveli on Monday. The minister, accompanied by collector R Sukumar, visited the proposed library site, which is spread across three acres near the District Industries Centre in Palayamkottai. Velu added that the new library in Tirunelveli would include a mini theatre, an auditorium, and exclusive rooms for differently-abled readers. He said, 'This library would serve students of Arts and Science colleges, medical and engineering colleges, and those preparing for competitive exams across southern districts. A model design will be prepared and approved by Chief Minister M K Stalin, and a tender will be floated.' Earlier, the minister inspected the ongoing construction work of the Porunai Museum at Kulavanigarpuram, for which CM Stalin had laid the foundation stone in May 2023. 'The museum is being built at a cost of Rs 56.57 crore on a 13-acre site to showcase artefacts discovered at sites including Korkai, Adichanallur and Sivagalai.' He added that works including a viewing bridge over a scenic pond, themed gardens, an open theatre, and a battery car access for the elderly are expected to be completed by August and inaugurated by the CM. Further, Velu informed that a long-pending demand for a 33-km western bypass road for Tirunelveli city is being fulfilled in two phases. He said, 'While Phase-I works for 12.093 km between Kongantharparai and Suthamalli are underway for Rs 180 crore, land acquisition for the second phase of the works up to Ramayanpatti is nearing completion. The second phase is estimated to cost Rs 225.47 crore.' He also said that a Y-shaped railway overbridge near Kulavanigarpuram railway crossing is proposed at Rs 93 crore, and the land acquisition for it is in its final stages. He noted that due to the proactive steps of the Highways Department, road accidents in the district have declined compared to last year.

PWD minister inspects proposed library, museum sites in Tirunelveli
Tirunelveli: State public works department minister (PWD) E V Velu, on Monday, inspected a site in Palayamkottai identified for constructing a state-of-the-art library for Tirunelveli city. Addressing reporters after the inspection, Velu said that the chief minister announced a new library in Tirunelveli at the cost of 100 crore, in line with new libraries coming up in Coimbatore and Trichy. The state govt has opened Kalaignar Library in Madurai, said Velu. The state govt gives a lot of importance to education and knowledge-related infrastructure, which includes libraries. The library in Tirunelveli would be constructed in such a way as to benefit the people of southern Tamil Nadu. Medical, engineering, and regular college students would benefit from the library to be constructed in Tirunelveli city, said Velu. The library would be provided with a mini theatre, auditorium, and facilities for the differently abled. The blueprint of the library would be prepared soon and would be sent for the approval of the chief minister. Elaborating on it, Velu said that the construction work is underway and the museum is likely to be inaugurated by the chief minister in August, he said. After Keeladi, the state govt is constructing a 54,000sqft Porunai museum to display the archaeological items discovered in the excavation sites in southern Tamil Nadu, namely at Korkai, Adichanallur, and Sivakalai. The museum premises, spread over 13 acres, would have several attractions, including a handicraft gallery, artificial pond, fountains, and open auditoriums.

Six-lane road work from Tiruvallur bypass to Sriperumbudur starts
CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday inaugurated the construction of a six-lane, access-controlled highway, from Tiruvallur Bypass to Sriperumbudur. The stretch is part of the 132.87 km Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) project. This third phase of the road works will cover a 30.1 km stretch and include two-lane service roads on either side, with a total project cost of Rs 2,689.74 crore. Highways Minister EV Velu and other officials were present during the function held at Thiruvallur. The 30.1 km Phase III of the CPRR will be executed in three stages: From Thiruvallur Bypass to Venkathur (10.4 km) at a cost of Rs 1,133.2 crore, Venkathur to Chengadu (10 km) at Rs 593.27 crore, and Chengadu to Sriperumbudur (9.7 km) at Rs 963.27 crore. The construction will include two major flyovers, one road overbridge, and two major bridges. The 132.87 km six-lane access-controlled road is being developed at a cost of Rs 16,212 crore with the funding from World Bank and other international agencies. The highway aims to facilitate faster movement of goods from southern Tamil Nadu to Ennore and Kattupalli ports, as well as to Andhra Pradesh, bypassing Chennai city. The CPRR starts at Ennore Port and ends at Poonjeri near Mahabalipuram on the East Coast Road (ECR), passing through Thatchur, Tiruvallur Bypass, Sriperumbudur, and SP Koil. Phase I of the project, undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) in 2021, covers a 25.4 km stretch from Ennore Port to Thatchur, including a link road to the Chennai Outer Ring Road, at an estimated cost of Rs 4,290 crore.
