NEW YORK — Caitlin Clark's arrival and a major surge in viewers over the past year led to ION Television reaching a multiyear agreement on Friday to extend its broadcasting partnership with the WNBA. ION, which is owned by the Cincinnati, Ohio-based, E.W. Scripps Company, did not reveal the length or value of the contract, which extends the network's original deal reached in 2023 to broadcast regular-season games and host a weekly studio show.

NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark's arrival and a major surge in viewers over the past year led to ION Television reaching a multiyear agreement on Friday to extend its broadcasting partnership with the WNBA. ION, which is owned by the Cincinnati, Ohio-based, E.W. Scripps Company, did not reveal the length or value of the contract, which extends the network's original deal reached in 2023 to broadcast regular-season games and host a weekly studio show. The existing three-year deal is worth $13 million per season. In a release, ION said the average viewership for its WNBA Friday Night Spotlight show increased by 133% from 2023 to '24, and attracted more than 23 million unique viewers, including game coverage. The jump coincides with Clark's celebrated rookie season in Indiana last year. The network reaches more than 128 million homes though its various platforms. Last year, the WNBA struck an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime and NBC that begins in 2026 and is worth about $200 million a year. ___ AP WNBA:

E.W. Scripps: Q1 Earnings Snapshot
CINCINNATI — CINCINNATI — E.W. Scripps Co. (SSP) on Thursday reported a loss of $3.5 million in its first quarter. The Cincinnati-based company said it had a loss of 22 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for restructuring costs, came to 18 cents per share. The television and radio company posted revenue of $524.4 million in the period.

Andrew Tate under criminal investigation
Florida's attorney general said on Tuesday that a criminal investigation has been opened into self-described misogynist influencer Andrew Tate and his brother, who flew to the southern US state last week from Romania, where they faced rape and human trafficking charges. "These guys have publicly admitted to participating in what very much appears to be soliciting, trafficking, preying upon women around the world," James Uthmeier said in comments posted online by a reporter with EW Scripps broadcasting. "This is an ongoing criminal investigation and we're going to use every tool we have to ensure that justice is served," he said. Tate arrived in the United States on Thursday – the first time he has been out of Romania since his 2022 arrest. Prosecutors in the eastern European country allege that Tate, 38, his brother Tristan, 36, and two women set up a criminal organisation in Romania and Britain in early 2021 and sexually exploited several victims. Tate, speaking to reporters after arriving in Fort Lauderdale last week, said he and his brother have "yet to be convicted of any crime in our lives ever." "We live in a democratic society where it's innocent until proven guilty, and I think my brother and I are largely misunderstood," he said. The government in Bucharest said the Tates, who have British and US nationalities and have been under judicial supervision in Romania, need to return to court on March 24, with a no-show potentially leading to "preventive arrest." Four British women, who have accused Tate of rape and coercive control in a separate civil case in the United Kingdom, recently voiced concern that the US government would help the Tates escape. In a joint statement, the four British women said they "feel retraumatised by the news that the Romanian authorities have given in to pressure from the Trump administration to allow Andrew Tate to travel." afp

He then turned to social media platforms to promote his often misogynistic and divisive views on how to be successful.
