Czech out this Bohemian beauty
Fresh Hop Bohemian Pilsner Your local paper, whenever you want it. Eagle Bay Brewing Co Czech, please. Eagle Bay Brewing Co has delved back to the origins of pale lager with its latest release, Fresh Hop Bohemian Pilsner. Pilsner takes its name from the Bohemian city of Plzen (or Pilsen in German) where the world's first pale lager was brewed in 1842. The South West brewers have sourced floor malted Bohemian Pilsner malt directly from the Czech Republic alongside aromatic Summer Saaz and Victoria hops from Margaret River Hops, delivered to the brewery as whole cones just hours after being picked. Eagle Bay describes its Bohemian Pilsner as a fresh hop beer with uniquely modern retro twist where 'old world meets new world'. The result is a bready, biscuity malt flavour followed by apricot, herbal and citrus characters from the local hops. Czech, or Bohemian-style, pilsners are traditionally crisp like other pilsner-style beers but have a spicy hop character and a nice, rich, complex maltiness. Bohemian-style pilsners usually have a bit more malt sweetness than German-style pils, which helps counter the hop bitterness, making it a more balanced, well-rounded beer. As you would expect, Fresh Hop Bohemian Pilsner pours a very pale gold you can see straight through. There's a very light head on it, and those fruity and herbal flavours are immediately evident on the nose. But from the very first sip, you know you are drinking a proper pils, with that hop bitterness coming to the fore ahead of those malt flavours. It's a fresh take on a classic. With a 4.5 per cent ABV, it's very sessionable but also ideal for sharing with like-minded Boho spirits. $6.99 for a single or $82 for a 16-pack cube

More than 150 brews on offer at WA beer event this weekend
The South West Craft Beer Festival is set to descend on Yallingup this weekend with the 'strongest line-up of award winners ever assembled'. The beer festival, returning for its thirteenth year on Saturday, aims to pair 'the best waves and brews' with a surfing theme inspired by the Margaret River Pro — which is running over the same weekend. A selection of more than 150 beers will be on offer, from local breweries such as Eagle Bay Brewing Co, Bush Shack Brewery, Cowaramup Brewing Company, CBCo and new editions to the festival — Bailey Brewing Co. The owners of the Bailey Brewing Co — Geoff Bailey and his sons Steve and Dan — opened their Dunsborough branch in June last year, hoping to 'bring a touch of Swan Valley to the South West'. Head brewer Damien Bussemaker said they were excited to join the festival for the first time, despite not yet producing beer out of the region. 'We don't have a brewery, we don't produce any beverages down there, but we we are part of the community,' he said. 'I've met most of the people from the other breweries before, but it's going to be good to see them in their natural habitat.' Credit: Supplied An extended range of seasonal beers will be available to cater for the cooler weather, such as red ales, stouts and a steam ale, as well as the usual lagers, pale ales, IPAs, sours and hazy NEIPAs. Festival director Jason Dover said the event would feature a formidable list of award-winning South West brewers. 'We wanted to take the festival in a new direction in 2025 and leading into the weekend we couldn't be more excited for not only our new venue at Aravina Estate which is simply picturesque, but also for the incredible line-up of beer and food, which we are confident will make this our best event ever,' he said. The festival will run from 10.30am to 5.30pm at Aravina Estate with tickets still available on the South West Craft Beer Festival website.

Festival to pair ‘best waves, brews' to celebrate surf scene
The 2025 South West Craft Beer Festival aims to pair 'the best waves and brews' with a surfing theme inspired by the Margaret River Pro — which will run over the same weekend. The beer festival will return for its 13th year at the Aravina Estate in Yallingup on May 17 to celebrate the rich surf culture of the region and its long ties with the craft beer industry. A selection of more than 150 beers will be on offer, from local breweries such as Eagle Bay Brewing Co, Bush Shack Brewery, Cowaramup Brewing Company, CBCo and new editions to the festival — Ocean Beach Brewing and Bailey Brewing Dunsborough. A line-up of local musicians will soon be announced to compliment the array of food and 'ice cold beers flowing all day long'. Festival director Jason Dover said organisers decided to give the festival 'a bit of a change-up' this year. 'Moving dates and venues has given us the ideal opportunity to bring together two passions that embody adventure and craftsmanship — craft beer and surf culture,' he said. 'Both celebrate creativity, community and the thrill of the perfect ride — whether it's a wave or a perfectly brewed pint.' Visitors will also be able to enter Arivina's WA Surf Gallery — which features rare memorabilia such as historic surfboards from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as well as photographs and stories of WA's surfing legends. For those not privy to a cold beer, a selection of premium wines, ginger beer and ciders will also be available, as well as Bush Shack Brewery's famous Screamin' & Creamin' and Mango Madness slushies. Tickets are available on the South West Craft Beer Festival website.
