Eain Yow exits British Open, Sivasangari last Malaysian standing
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 12 Ng Eain Yow suffered a shock second-round exit at the British Open in Birmingham on Sunday. The Asian champion, who received a first-round bye, went down 13-11, 11-5, 11-7 to world No. 14 Victor Crouin of France in 58 minutes. It was Eain Yow's first loss to the Frenchman in four meetings and a disappointing step back after reaching the quarter-finals last year. Malaysia's campaign in the women's category also took a hit, with Rachel Arnold, Aifa Azman and Ainaa Amani all bowing out in the first round. S. Sivasangari is now the sole Malaysian left in the tournament. She begins her campaign in the second round later today. Despite the early exit, national coach Ajaz Azmat saw positives in Eain Yow's performance. "Eain Yow fought really hard, but it just wasn't his day," said Ajaz. "The first game was very close, and he had chances to take it. But Crouin was just too good, especially in the crucial stages." Eain Yow will now shift focus to defending his title at the Asian Championships in Kuching, Sarawak, on June 17-21.

NATIONAL squash ace S. Sivasangari has blazed a trail into the quarter-finals of the World Championships, becoming the first Malaysian to achieve the feat since the legendary Datuk Nicol David in 2017. The world No. 9 delivered a masterclass in Chicago on Tuesday, dismantling American world No. 8 Amanda Sobhy 11-8, 14-12, 11-6 in just 32 minutes during their third-round clash. ALSO READ: Sivasangari, Eain Yow storm into finals on different shores It marked her third win over Sobhy in five meetings, including a hard-fought five-game victory in the Cincinnati Cup final earlier this year. 'The last two times played against her, the score was 3-2, and I won the last one. 'She's a fighter, and I'm really pleased to win in three. That reaction (celebrating after clinching the winning point) showed how much it means to me,' Sivasangari told New Straits Times. 'I've never made the quarters at the World Championships. I barely even reach the quarters of Platinum events. I'm really pleased and happy with how I performed today.' The 25-year-old Malaysian will next face world No. 4 Olivia Weaver of the United States on Thursday (May 15) for a place in the semi-finals. Weaver, 34, secured her quarter-final berth with a 3-1 win over Egypt's Salma Hany, prevailing 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 11-4 in 47 minutes. Despite holding a 5-1 advantage over Sivasangari, Weaver lost their most recent encounter at the Cincinnati Cup semi-finals. On the men's side, Malaysian No. 1 Ng Eain Yow's campaign came to an end after falling to Egyptian world No. 1 Mostafa Asal in straight games — 11-4, 11-6, 11-7 — in the third round. 'Eain Yow is a fantastic player. His country should be proud of him after breaking into the world's top 10. 'He was really tight today, and it was a good match. I'm ready for the next challenge,' said Asal. Asal is set to face fellow Egyptian and fifth seed Tarek Momen in the quarter-finals on Wednesday (May 14).

Sivasangari, Eain Yow power into third round at Worlds
KUALA LUMPUR: S. Sivasangari and Ng Eain Yow stayed on course at the World Squash Championships in Chicago by cruising into the third round on Sunday. But it was the end of the road for compatriots Rachel Arnold and Aira Azman, who crashed out in the second round. World No. 9 Sivasangari, a third-round casualty in Cairo last year, overcame Egypt's world No. 17 Sana Ibrahim 11-4, 11-6, 5-11, 11-5 in 41 minutes. Eain Yow, the world No. 10, needed just 32 minutes to dispatch Pakistan's world No. 54 Asim Khan 11-4, 11-2, 11-4. Sivasangari, the reigning Asian champion, will next face world No. 8 Amanda Sobhy of the United States on Tuesday for a spot in the quarter-finals. The 26-year-old, who has never progressed beyond the third round at the Worlds, holds a 2-2 record against Sobhy. She won their last meeting in the Cincinnati Cup final in February. Eain Yow, meanwhile, faces a tough task against world No. 1 and title favourite Mostafa Asal of Egypt. Asal, the runner-up in Cairo last year, stormed past Germany's Raphael Kandra 11-3, 11-5, 11-2 to set up the third-round clash. The Egyptian leads their head-to-head 2-1. World No. 19 Rachel fell to world No. 4 Olivia Weaver of the United States 11-5, 11-2, 11-13, 11-5, while world No. 26 Aira was beaten 11-6, 12-10, 11-4 by Egypt's world No. 12 Salma Hany in 29 minutes. National coach Ajaz Azmat said Sivasangari and Eain Yow had little trouble in their second-round ties but must now prepare for much tougher tests "The real battle starts in the third round for both of them," said Ajaz. "I hope Sivasangari can raise her game and beat Sobhy again. "She's fired up and knows how to handle the pressure." Ajaz added: "Eain Yow is up against a red-hot Asal, but I know he'll give it everything to cause an upset." Despite their exits, Ajaz said he was pleased with Rachel and Aira's performances.
