Will it rain on the Indy 500? Here's central Indiana's latest weather forecast as of Wednesday
The 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 is now just four days away, and we're keeping tabs on the weather forecast leading up to race day. Here's what we know about rain chances at this year's race. As of Wednesday morning, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis predict some afternoon showers and potentially thunderstorms on race day. "We can't rule out a thunderstorm or two around that 2 p.m. timeframe," Earl Breon, a meteorologist with NWS Indianapolis told IndyStar Wednesday morning. "It's a few days out from now so things could change on us, but looking at Sunday, that's kind of what we're looking for right now is a 30% chance of (precipitation), upper 60s to around 70 and then mainly a chance of showers. Maybe a thunderstorm in the area," Breon said. Out of the past 108 runnings of the Indianapolis 500, measurable or trace amounts of precipitation fell 47 times at some point during the day — that's roughly 44%, according to historical records maintained by the NWS. Last year's rainfall during the Indy 500 was one for the record books. Severe weather in 2024 caused the race to be delayed for roughly three hours after 1.48 inches of rain spilled across central Indiana, soaking the track as well as the fans. It was the third rainiest Indy 500 ever. Story continues after photo gallery. The extended weather forecast for central Indiana is as follows: ⛈️🌧️ Wednesday: Scattered showers, mainly after 10 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. Twice, rain stopped the race — first at Lap 28, then a second time which ultimately led to shortening that year's Indy 500 to 180 laps (450 miles), according to IMS. National Weather Service predicts strong storms, days of rain ahead of mild race weekend
Strong thunderstorms are expected to hit Indianapolis during the afternoon and evening of May 20. The possibility of a tornado "cannot be ruled out," according to the National Weather Service. Rain showers will be constant through the afternoon. Isolated storms are possible before then, but forecasters don't expect widespread storms until about 4 p.m. High winds are the most pressing threat. Winds within storms could reach up to 50 mph, and gusts throughout the day will be more moderate, about 20 to 25 mph. Flooding and hail are also possible. Storms will end around 2 a.m. on May 21. Rain will continue to fall all day May 21 and May 22, but storms aren't predicted. Forecasters are keeping an especially close eye on the flooding risk because of the steady rain, according to NWS meteorologist Earl Breon. Drivers should be mindful of flooding risk along their commutes. "It's not uncommon for one place to get lighter amounts of precipitation and a place next door to experience flash flooding in a situation like this," Breon said. The sun will come back out on May 23. Race weekend so far looks calm and temperate, with only a 30% chance of rain on May 25. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 💻 Internet outages: How to track them. Rain, hail, thunder and heat: what weather to expect in Indianapolis for the rest of the week
Indianapolis can expect rain for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service. The wet weather won't dampen the temperatures brought in by a heat wave expected to push temperatures into the high 80s over the next few days. While forecasters aren't ruling out the chance of severe storms on May 14, they aren't likely, according to NWS meteorologist Earl Breon. Rainfall amounts throughout the Indianapolis area will vary, with some zip codes receiving only a sprinkling while others will see as much as an inch of rainfall. A flood warning has been issued through 11:30 a.m. May 14 for "creeks, streams, low-lying spots on roads and construction zones, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring" for Marion, Johnson and Hamilton counties. May 15 will begin partly sunny, and temperatures will spike as high as 88 degrees. But be careful with enjoying the outdoors — there's a slight chance of severe storms beginning at around 3 p.m., and the risk increases at around 9 p.m. "The ones that do become severe have potential to produce large hail, strong winds - things of that nature," Breon said. Storms will continue overnight into the early morning hours, tapering off between 1-2 a.m. on May 16. The NWS doesn't currently predict tornadoes, but that could change as more information becomes available, according to Breon. The chance of severe weather will continue on May 16, though storms may stay south of Indianapolis. Hail will remain a possibility, but high winds will be a stronger concern. May 16 will see temperatures around 87 degrees. The days of heavy rainfall will bring "a ramped-up threat of potential isolated flooding," especially beginning on May 16. And while there's a chance of rain continuing through the weekend, May 15 and May 16 remain the primary severe weather threats. Breon said people should prepare for the hazards presented both by storms and by severe heat. Power outages brought on by the storms could knock out air conditioning, exacerbating heat stress, Breon said. 🚨 Indiana Weather Alerts: Warnings, Watches and Advisories. ⚡ Indiana power outage map: How to check your status. 💻 Internet outages: How to track them. 🚫 What you should and shouldn't do when the power is out.
