The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is gearing up for one of its most ambitious space missions. The launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite. Scheduled for liftoff on July 30, 2025, at 5:40 PM IST, the mission will take off aboard the GSLV-F16 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. NISAR marks a significant milestone in global space cooperation, combining NASA's advanced L-band radar technology with ISRO's state-of-the-art S-band radar system. The mission is set to deliver high-resolution, all-weather, day-and-night imaging of Earth. This capability is said to allow scientists to track crucial environmental changes, including land subsidence, glacier dynamics, and ecosystem health, with exceptional accuracy, making NISAR one of the most sophisticated Earth observation missions ever undertaken. This mission is particularly noteworthy as it represents ISRO's 102nd mission overall and the first GSLV launch dedicated to a radar-based Earth observation satellite. It highlights India's expanding leadership in space science and its capacity to successfully execute intricate international collaborations. According to ISRO, the satellite's key objectives are to tracking land and ice deformation to better understand events such as earthquakes, landslides, and glacial melt; mapping terrestrial ecosystems and analyzing forest changes to monitor biodiversity and carbon sequestration and study oceanic zones, including shoreline alterations and rising sea levels, with joint research input from Indian and U.S. teams. Additionally, NISAR is also geared up to monitor seasonal variations in forest coverage, detect terrain shifts in mountainous regions, and track glacial activity in sensitive areas like the Himalayas, Antarctica, and the polar zones. These insights are expected to enhance climate models, strengthen disaster response efforts, and support effective management of natural resources. Spire Global Awarded European Space Agency Contract for Weather Data

Pakistan to launch new remote-sensing satellite to monitor resources, boost disaster management
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will be launching another remote-sensing satellite from a Chinese launch center next week to monitor resources and boost disaster management efforts, its space research commission SUPARCO announced on Sunday. The launch of the satellite will mark a major milestone in Pakistan's space program, significantly enhancing its Earth observation capabilities. It will support a wide range of national applications, including precision agriculture to boost crop yields, monitoring infrastructure growth and urban sprawl, and enabling regional planning, according to SUPARCO. The satellite will strengthen disaster management efforts by providing timely warnings for floods, landslides, and earthquakes, while tracking glacier recession and deforestation. In addition, it will support national development initiatives by mapping transportation networks and identifying geo-hazard risks. "The launch of this remote sensing satellite, along with its integration into Pakistan's existing remote sensing fleet — including PRSS-1 (launched in July 2018) and EO-1 (launched in January 2025) — will further strengthen the country's space-based infrastructure, aligning with the National Space Policy and SUPARCO's Vision 2047, aiming to position our nation at the forefront of space technology and innovation," SUPARCO said in a statement. The satellite, whose data acquisition capabilities under various environmental conditions make it a vital asset for environmental monitoring and resource management, will be launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC), China on July 31. Pakistan has taken strides in its space research program in recent years months. In January this year, China launched Pakistan's indigenously developed Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite into space from its Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, aiming to predict natural disasters and monitor resources, Chinese and Pakistani state media reported. In Nov. last year, SUPARCO announced its rover will join China's Chang'E 8 mission to explore the moon's surface in 2028. Prior to that in May 2024, Pakistan launched its first lunar satellite aboard China's Chang'e-6 probe, which was tasked with landing on the far side of the moon that perpetually faces away from the Earth. China was the first country to make such an ambitious attempt.

Poland Seeks to Get Stake in Surveillance-Satellite Maker Iceye
Poland is taking steps to purchase a stake in privately-held Iceye Oy, the Finnish maker of advanced Earth-observation satellites. Vinci SA, an investment vehicle of the country's state development bank BGK, is in final talks to acquire Iceye's convertible debt in the ongoing funding round, according to people familiar with the process, who didn't disclose the size of the potential transaction. The investment will support the company's plans to expand production as well as research and development facilities in Poland, they said.
