Juneteenth parade to close these Austin streets on Thursday. See road closure map
Austin's Juneteenth parade will take place on Thursday, June 19, along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Chicon Street. Austin drivers should expect road closures in the East Austin area and around Rosewood Neighborhood Park. According to city officials, MLK Jr. Boulevard between I-35 and Poquito Street will be fully closed for the parade and will serve as a staging area for the festival. Chicon Street, from MLK Jr. Boulevard to Rosewood Avenue, will also be closed, as well as Rosewood Avenue from Salina Street to Rosewood Park. Cross streets that intersect Chicon St. in the area will be open only to local traffic, while Thompson, Bedford and Neal Streets will be closed around Rosewood Park for the festival. Roads that make up the parade route — MLK Jr., Chicon, and Rosewood — will be shut from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the streets near Rosewood Park will close for the evening festivities from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. For more information about Juneteenth celebrations in Austin, read more of our coverage here. East Austin post office set to relocate near Manor Rd.
AUSTIN (KXAN)– The United States Postal Service has made its final decision to shut down its east Austin station and relocate its services elsewhere, according to a press release. This comes after a 30-day community feedback period. Postal services at the East Sixth Street location,1914 E. 6th St., will be moved to a new facility located at 3112 Manor Road. The tentative location is about a three mile drive from the east Austin station. However, that will only happen if an agreement is reached with the owner of the building, the release said. If an agreement cannot be reached, USPS will consider other sites within the area. The east Austin station will remain open to offer services until the new facility is open and operating. The release said the Postal Service plans to provide the same services at the new location. A previous report from KXAN highlighted resident's concerns due to the lack of locations in that part of the city, calling it a 'postal desert' emerging in east Austin. At the time, there weren't plans for a new site in east Austin. There are currently 16 USPS locations in Austin and the majority of those sites operate west of Interstate 35. 'While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the East Austin community, the USPS properly considered community input…' the release stated Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
