Plans to convert historic towers into holiday lets

An East Sussex council is due to consider plans which would see two historic military towers turned into holiday lets. The plans, submitted to Eastbourne Borough Council's (EBC) planning committee, would see internal and external conversions to Martello Towers 66 and 64 near Sovereign Harbour and the Crumbles respectively. The proposals have the support of Historic England and local heritage group The Eastbourne Society. However, critics have raised concerns about noise, parking, wildlife impact and light pollution. Martello Towers were originally built to serve as military defences during the Napoleonic era. Specific works on the Grade II listed structures include roof extensions, solar panel installations and the construction of new access staircases to turn them into short-term holiday lets. In a statement reproduced within a report to the planning committee, a spokesman for Historic England said the heritage and public benefits "outweigh the harm", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). It said the works would "likely remove the assets from the Heritage At Risk register". The applications, submitted by Robert Adams, have been recommended for approval with the committee report noting the applicant had worked "closely with Historic England over the last few years" on proposed designs. Both applications received 54 objection letters each, citing concerns over privacy for local residents and sea flooding works conducted by the Environment Agency (EA). The EA had initially raised concerns about the proposals but has since withdrawn its objections subject to conditions. EBC's planning committee is due to consider the applications on 3 June. Holocaust survivor granted town's highest honour

A Holocaust survivor has been honoured with Eastbourne's highest award. Dorit Oliver-Wolff BEM was granted the Freedom of the Borough by Eastbourne Borough Council during a ceremony at the Town Hall on Wednesday, May 21. Mrs Oliver-Wolff, who was born in Yugoslavia in 1936, endured years of hiding and near starvation after her home country was invaded by Nazi Germany in 1941. Her father was killed, and the experiences profoundly shaped her life. After the war, she rebuilt her life and became a successful singer and top 10 recording artist in Germany. In recent years, she has lived in Eastbourne and dedicated her time to sharing her story and educating others about the Holocaust. She was awarded a British Empire Medal for services to Holocaust education and awareness in 2019. The motion to confer the Freedom of the Borough honour was put forward by Councillor Robert Smart and seconded by Councillor Stephen Holt. The symbolic and ceremonial honour, which dates back to the Middle Ages, recognises eminent services or achievements. A council spokesperson said: "Eastbourne Borough Council has honoured Holocaust survivor Dorit Oliver-Wolff BEM by bestowing her with its highest award, Freedom of the Borough. "Mrs Oliver-Wolff BEM was admitted as an Honorary Freewoman of the Borough of Eastbourne in recognition and appreciation of her extraordinary life, her outstanding contribution to Eastbourne and its community, her work as a freedom fighter and campaigner for human rights, her dedication to Holocaust education and her passion to ensure that the Holocaust is never forgotten."

Worthing seafront big wheel given green light

The return of a big wheel in Worthing has been approved by council planners. The 44m (144ft) observation wheel will be based on the seafront between the pier and lido, opposite Montague Place. Worthing Borough Council (WBC) said the West Sussex attraction - which would offer "unique views" of the seaside and surrounding areas - could be up and running from 7 April. It is set to operate from March to November, between 10:00 and 22:00, until 2028 under the plans. WBC said it would begin preparing the promenade for the installation in the coming days, fencing off areas to ensure the wheel could be safely delivered and assembled. Concerns were previously raised that the wheel's height could negatively impact several listed buildings nearby and encroach on the privacy of neighbouring residents. However, a council planning document said the benefits of bringing visitors to the town centre and seafront would outweigh the "limited harm" of the wheel. A same-sized wheel was granted planning permission in 2024, while a 46m (150.9ft) high one was approved in 2019. WBC's planning committee voted six to one in favour of the move. It comes as Eastbourne Borough Council announced the seaside town is due to get its own observation wheel, which it called a "big crowd pleaser". Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, X and Instagram. Sussex seaside town to get big wheel

An East Sussex seaside town is set to get an observation wheel. The 36m (118ft) big wheel - dubbed the "Sky Club" - is due to be on Eastbourne's eastern seafront, near the beaches east of the Redoubt, from 5 April. An Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) spokesperson said the attraction would increase footfall to the area and "light up" the night-time economy. "The observation wheel is such a big crowd-pleaser for people of all ages," they said. EBC said the promenade would be temporarily closed between Treasure Island car park and the T-junction near Splash Point Café from 7:00 BST on 31 March until 4 April to install the wheel. It will operate for four weeks, according to EBC. The local authority said the wheel would offer "panoramic views" of the seafront towards Sovereign Harbour and the town's pier. Eastbourne has had an big wheel on the western side of the seafront in previous years. Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, X and Instagram.
