What's on in Sussex this May Bank Holiday weekend?
Some of the biggest events on the Sussex social calendar are happening this bank holiday weekend, which has been dubbed Marvellous May.Promising "something for everybody", people across the county will be able to enjoy theatre, comedy, cabaret, exhibitions, family shows, spoken word and circus, among other events.The popular Brighton Fringe festival begins on Friday, celebrating its 20th year with "a feast of good taste", while Brighton Festival kicks off on Saturday with the annual parade of children through the city.The crowds of visitors are expected to bring a welcome boost to trade for many businesses.
Some of the highlights include Magnificent Motors in Eastbourne on Saturday and Sunday and celebratory Jack in the Green parade in Hastings on Monday.Peter Martin, head of events and seafront at Eastbourne Borough Council, told Radio Sussex: "We have Magnificent Motors this weekend, which is taking place on the Western Lawns which is just opposite the Grand Hotel. "We have over 600 vintage cars, everything from 1900, very early vehicles, to modern day electrics."He added there will also be a funfair, lots of retailers and a bar on site, as well as a stage for presentations and talks.The free event will be an "excellent fun day out for all the family", Mr Martin said.
In Hastings, Keith Leech, founder of the annual Jack in the Green event, said: "We've got a lot coming up this weekend, it's really really exciting."We've discovered that there's a sort of Jack in the Green-type thing that used to happen in Jamaica and the local Afro-Caribbean community have been working on it and they're doing a talk this evening, so that's going to be really exciting."Then we've got a folk session playing music, singing songs in the East Hastings Angling Association."Then over the weekend we've got Morris dancing across the streets of Hastings, all day long, particularly around the Old Town area, every single day, culminating with the procession with the Jack in the Green on Monday."
In Brighton and Hove, Amy Keogh, managing director of the Brighton Fringe Festival, said there were more than 800 events planned for this year."People have the freedom to put a show on, do a performance... and so you get the chance to see some brilliant stuff, some crazy stuff," she told Radio Sussex."We cross so many genres, we go through theatre, music, circus, comedy, family shows, dance, exhibitions. We've got new venues which are bringing new shows."With forecasters predicting the sunshine and high temperatures will stick around, visitors and residents will be able to enjoy a splash to cool off.Three paddling pools - at Saunders Park, Hove Lagoon and The Level - are opening in Brighton and Hove from Saturday until 14 September.But the King's Road paddling pool is planned to be re-opened in the summer, the council said.Councillor Alan Robins, cabinet member for sports and recreation at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: "We know how important this paddling pool is to the local community. "Now we are certain the roadworks which would have impacted the site will take place later in the year we have made the decision to re-open this pool for the summer."We are currently sourcing quotes to bring the pool up to a suitable standard but are determined to have it open and being enjoyed by families as soon as possible."

Martin Scorsese admits one of his most iconic 90s films 'has no plot'
Martin Scorsese has opened up about making one of his most iconic films, confessing that it actually has 'no plot'. The acclaimed director helmed 1995 crime drama Casino, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone, Don Rickles and Frank Vincent, following mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein as he oversees the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. It was adapted from a book written by Nick Pileggi, and commands an exhausting run time of nearly three hours. Unpacking the hit movie, Martin previously said that there was 'no plot at all' to be found within the two hours and 58 minutes, conceding that there's 'a lot of action, a lot of story, but no plot'. During a Q&A session with Robert ahead of a screening of the flick at Tribeca Film Festival, held at the Beacon Theater on Thursday, moderator W Kamau Bell questioned his remarks, and he stood his ground. 'Yeah, it's a substantial length film,' he said to laughs from the audience. 'We wanted to sustain one note, so to speak, pushing all the way through the length of the picture. Make it feel as if it's like a breathless experience. 'I don't know if the plot was necessary… I often think films that you think about, or things you've read often, if you really examine them, I find that a lot of the films that I [like], let's say Hitchcock's Vertigo, for example, who cares about the plot at this point? 'Also, if you really, really analyze that plot, it's highly improbable!' 'What are we watching it for? You're watching it for other reasons,' Martin continued. 'You're watching it for cinema, color, the actors, the dialog, the mood, the tone and experience… 'What I'm getting at is that I think if you find that you're watching a film for a plot, or you read a book for a plot, unless the characterization is so unique in psychological depth and emotional depth, there's no reason to read it again or see it again, because you know the plot. 'So what's the point?' In Casino, Robert led the star-studded cast as mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, who was tasked with running a Las Vegas casino. He was forced to take action when best friend Nicky Santoro's (Joe Pesci) criminal activities – as well as his own romance with con artist Ginger (Sharon Stone) – drew too much attention to their antics. The movie served as a reunion for Martin, Robert and Joe, who worked together on 1990 film Goodfellas, also adapted from a nonfiction book by Nick. Discussing the note that Casino was 'adapted from a true story', the director conceded: 'We did have to do a great deal of changing names. It's in the movie, we can't even say Chicago. 'When it cuts back to Chicago, we put 'back home'.' When asked about whether there was 'pushback' from the mob community, he added: 'No… There were meetings in Vegas with a number of people who told [us] to be careful and remember that these [characters were] based on real people, etc. More Trending 'The point is that the material … is public knowledge and it is apparently factual. We changed the names, we changed so many things. But naturally, those who know the characters it's based upon, they know the truth. These are elements of truth. NEW Rangers manager Russell Martin has admitted he's a 'weirdo' in the footie world. But despite being labelled the sport's most 'woke' boss, the retired defender actually endured a brutal upbringing. The second youngest of four brothers, Martin grew up in the Hollingbury area of Brighton and watched as his late Scots dad Dean was violent towards mum Kerry and had stints in prison. His family home was lost to his gambling debts — and he moved them next door to a bookies. In a recent podcast interview with footy legend Gary Lineker, Martin said: 'There was too much violence and it became a bit normal. From my dad to my mum. I witnessed a lot of it. A lot of my childhood was spent trying to placate the adults in my life. 'The problem with my dad was he had the capability to be amazing and really likeable but the gap between him at his best and worst was too big. 'And he was a big gambler so the day depended on how he did at the bookies and he worked nights on the taxis so you couldn't make a sound in the morning so it was eggshells a lot of the time and I spent a lot of time kicking the ball against the bookies' wall. 'My dad was great in some ways but I'd never do with my kids what he did with me.' Martin was forced to leave his troubled dad behind and look after his mum when they moved out to escape the violence at home. Despite the early trauma, he excelled at school where he was made head boy. And even after a string of top clubs rejected the budding footballer, he joined non-league side Lewes and cleaned windows and pub toilets in the mornings with his uncle and did shifts at a Spar supermarket across the road in the evenings to make some spare cash. Premier League boss Russell Martin has found love with former glamour model Lucy Pinder He got his break under Arsenal legend Tony Adams, 58, at Wycombe before moving on to Peterborough and Norwich — whose manager at the time, Celtic hero Paul Lambert, 55, has been a huge influence on his career. During this time the Scots stopper married bodybuilder Jasmine Martin and the pair had three children before splitting in 2023. Martin, who also enjoyed brief stints with Walsall, MK Dons and even Rangers in 2018, gave up meat and turned vegan for health reasons after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. He was part-owner of a vegan restaurant and later practiced meditation and breath work as he embraced Buddhism after finding religion through a book called 'The Buddha, Geoff and Me' by Edward Canfor-Dumas. Meanwhile, he revealed he'd joined the Green Party in 2018 after growing disillusioned with politics. But it probably wasn't a surprise to his then Norwich teammates - as Martin often implored them to turn the taps off and think about climate change. He also drives electric cars, is obsessive about recycling and started his own foundation which has grown from a football academy to a charity that helps kids struggling in mainstream school. The philanthropist once said: 'I'm probably deemed a bit of a weirdo in terms of football. But, to be honest, I'm past the point of worrying what others think. 'It's not like: 'Is it going to harm my employment opportunities because of where I vote and what I stand for?' If it did, I wouldn't want to work for those people anyway.' Martin was preparing for his coaching career during his playing days — studying for his coaching badges at age 22, and going for his Uefa Pro Licence at the Scottish FA in 2019. He enjoyed successful spells in charge of MK Dons and Swansea City before his honeymoon period at Southampton — they were promoted to the English Premier League — came crashing down when they were relegated and he was sacked. The heartbreaking end to his top flight stint wasn't a surprise after a 5-0 loss - but it could have been handled better. Martin said: 'I went in thinking that time was done. I needed to go to the toilet and compose myself before doing the team talk. So I went in and said to the lads at half-time, 0-5 down: 'I'm getting sacked tonight.' 'It was like an out of body experience watching the second half, I felt so detached from it because I knew what was coming. 'After the game, I spoke to the guys again and said: 'Thanks for everything, I'm not sure what's gonna happen now'. 8 'I went into the press conference and asked the head of media 'what's happening?' He says, 'We've done the statement' so it was a really quick press conference. He told me to go upstairs. I wanted to wait until the morning but we did it [the sacking] with the owners straight after the game.' But he hasn't allowed his dismissal last year to bring him down as he's found love with Southampton-daft glamour model Lucy. They were seen out together when the football coach was given an honorary degree by Brighton University and later turned heads at a Sky Sports social function. Pin-up Lucy, shot to fame as a glamour model in the early 2000s after she was spotted on Bournemouth beach by a photographer. She went on to become a regular in lads' mags Nuts, FHM and Loaded and has been in several movies — debuting in 2012 in Strippers vs Werewolves — and appeared on Celebrity Big Brother.
