Martin Scorsese admits one of his most iconic 90s films 'has no plot'
Martin Scorsese has opened up about making one of his most iconic films, confessing that it actually has 'no plot'.
The acclaimed director helmed 1995 crime drama Casino, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone, Don Rickles and Frank Vincent, following mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein as he oversees the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas.
It was adapted from a book written by Nick Pileggi, and commands an exhausting run time of nearly three hours.
Unpacking the hit movie, Martin previously said that there was 'no plot at all' to be found within the two hours and 58 minutes, conceding that there's 'a lot of action, a lot of story, but no plot'.
During a Q&A session with Robert ahead of a screening of the flick at Tribeca Film Festival, held at the Beacon Theater on Thursday, moderator W Kamau Bell questioned his remarks, and he stood his ground.
'Yeah, it's a substantial length film,' he said to laughs from the audience. 'We wanted to sustain one note, so to speak, pushing all the way through the length of the picture. Make it feel as if it's like a breathless experience.
'I don't know if the plot was necessary… I often think films that you think about, or things you've read often, if you really examine them, I find that a lot of the films that I [like], let's say Hitchcock's Vertigo, for example, who cares about the plot at this point?
'Also, if you really, really analyze that plot, it's highly improbable!'
'What are we watching it for? You're watching it for other reasons,' Martin continued. 'You're watching it for cinema, color, the actors, the dialog, the mood, the tone and experience…
'What I'm getting at is that I think if you find that you're watching a film for a plot, or you read a book for a plot, unless the characterization is so unique in psychological depth and emotional depth, there's no reason to read it again or see it again, because you know the plot.
'So what's the point?'
In Casino, Robert led the star-studded cast as mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, who was tasked with running a Las Vegas casino.
He was forced to take action when best friend Nicky Santoro's (Joe Pesci) criminal activities – as well as his own romance with con artist Ginger (Sharon Stone) – drew too much attention to their antics.
The movie served as a reunion for Martin, Robert and Joe, who worked together on 1990 film Goodfellas, also adapted from a nonfiction book by Nick.
Discussing the note that Casino was 'adapted from a true story', the director conceded: 'We did have to do a great deal of changing names. It's in the movie, we can't even say Chicago.
'When it cuts back to Chicago, we put 'back home'.'
When asked about whether there was 'pushback' from the mob community, he added: 'No… There were meetings in Vegas with a number of people who told [us] to be careful and remember that these [characters were] based on real people, etc. More Trending
'The point is that the material … is public knowledge and it is apparently factual. We changed the names, we changed so many things. But naturally, those who know the characters it's based upon, they know the truth. These are elements of truth.
'Naturally, there are people, there are families and that sort of thing, and there was some pushback.
'People push back forward, so to speak.'

Robert De Niro tricks Hollywood legend into taking part in TikTok trend
Robert De Niro has played an adorable prank on one of his oldest friends and most frequent collaborators in a viral moment from this week. The legendary actor, 81, decided to drag his long-time creative partner and Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese, 82, into an ongoing TikTok trend. In recent weeks, the wholesome hashtag #goodnightbro has been doing the rounds on the video-based social media platform, reaching millions of users. As part of the trend, young men are being encouraged to phone up their male friends and wish them a good night's sleep – and maybe they'll chuck in a 'sweet dreams' if they're feeling mushy. However, wholesome as it might be, #goodnightbro is still a prank, and the recipients of the calls are often not expecting to receive good night wishes from their pals. And filmmaker Scorsese was the unwitting recipient of such a call from De Niro, who has starred in 10 of Scorsese's films since their first collaboration in 1973. A video has emerged of Goodfellas director Scorsese looking confused after receiving a call from the legendary actor – the Kundun director was encouraged to answer the call by his daughter Francesca, 25. In the clip, Francesca videos Scorsese answering his phone and asks her dad to 'say hello' to whoever is calling – a request he adheres to before a booming voice (De Niro) says 'Hello?' on the other end. After Scorsese asks if it's 'Bob?' calling, De Niro chuckles to himself, says 'Just calling to say goodnight and sleep tight,' and asks if Scorsese wants to jump on FaceTime. The two them jump on FaceTime and De Niro shows Scorsese a brief glimpse of what he's been watching on TV, before the pair make arrangements to meet up the next day at 6.15 (hopefully PM). Fans have worked out that the Killers of the Flower Moon actor is watching The Wiggles with his two-year-old daughter Gia, whom he shares with his 45-year-old girlfriend Tiffany Chen. Scorsese then says 'Okay, thank you, my love – bye!' before De Niro affectionately blows kisses through the phone while the person recording starts to laugh. After the call is over, the Taxi Driver director speaking to Francesca – who has kept the camera rolling – and admits to finding the whole thing a 'mystery'. When he's told that it's just a TikTok trend for laughs, Scorsese, exasperated, exclaims: 'That's what that was? A trend thing?' The two first worked together on the 1973 film Mean Streets, which was directed by Scorsese and starred De Niro in the leading role. Throughout the 1970s, their working relationship produced films such as Taxi Driver and New York, New York – the latter being a musical drama. In the following decade, the pair worked together on 1980's Raging Bull and the 1982 film The King of Comedy before taking a break from each other for eight years. That hiatus ended in 1990 when they combined for the seminal gangster film Goodfellas, and they soon picked up again for Cape Fear in 1991 and Casino in 1995. More Trending In more recent years, the pair have worked on The Audition from 2015, The Irishman in 2019, and most recently in 2023 for the Leonardo DiCaprio movie Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite being one of the most famous and decorated actors of all time, De Niro recently admitted that he's only just realised how good he might be on screen. Speaking to Metro, he said: 'Most of the time you're just sort of looking and [squirming], but it's possible. Especially if you have many, many years distance between the time that you did it and the time you're seeing it.' As for Scorsese, he's admitted that while he's putting plans together for his next film, he's not entirely clear on what shape his next project will take, saying to USA Today that he's still going to 'get going'. Guess who! Aussie actor looks unrecognisable as he steps out for VERY famous pop star step-daughter's New York premiere
An Australian actor looked completely unrecognisable as he stepped out for a New York premiere for his very famous pop star step-daughter. The 55-year old looked worlds away from his trademark clean cut look as he was spotted arriving at New York's Beacon Hotel on Saturday. He recently tied the knot with the world-famous American pop star's mother, with their union making headlines at the time. Away from his romantic life, he also got his start on Australian screens with a brief stint as a policeman on long running soap Home And Away. After turns in such shows as Raw FM, Heartbreak High, and Water Rats, he headed stateside where he landed one of his best known roles in a top prison drama. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. He appeared in five seasons of the popular Fox series and picked up the international award for best actor for the role at the 2007 AACTA awards. But do you recognise who this Australian actor is? It's none other than Dominic Purcell, who stepped out to support step-daughter Miley Cyrus at the premiere of her visual album Something Beautiful on day three of the Tribeca Film Festival. Dominic's new look was a far cry from his Prison Break days, with the actor sporting a neatly trimmed salt and pepper beard. His trademark buzzcut had also been swapped for a neatly cropped 'do' that suited the actor to a tee. He cut quite the stylish figure in a dark grey Western-tinged jacket that featured leather embellishments on the collar, shoulders and pockets. He wore this over a black V-neck T-shirt that clung to his chiselled frame. Dominic finished his red carpet look with a pair of plain black jeans and a pair of very well-worn black leather boots. Dominic arrived with wife Tish Cyrus, 58, who cut a very stylish figure in a form-fitting sequined off-the-shoulder jumpsuit. Miley, meanwhile was the epitome of glamour, arriving in a dazzling gold gown with boyfriend Maxx Morando on her arm. Her strapless, embellished gown perfectly hugged her curves, with the star adding to the glam with her showstopping locks, which were styled in voluminous waves. The couple looked happier than ever as they held each other close while walking through the crowds. Dominic also recently posted a black and white snap of himself to Instagram. Fans branded the star as 'unrecognisable' as he was sporting a long, white beard and moustache. His new look appears to be more recent, as the actor was still clean-shaven at his 2023 wedding. Prison Break viewers were quick to rush to the comment section to discuss his drastic change in appearance. OMG! Santa Claus is in the house,' one fan joked. 'For a second, I didn't recognise you,' another commented, while a third wrote, 'Bro, you are unrecognisable.' 'He looks like a different man. Still [fire],'yet another shared. Dominic tied the knot with Tish Cyrus back in 2023, in a romantic ceremony following her divorce from her husband of 28 years Billy Ray. While some family members such as daughter Miley were present for the August wedding, Tish's kids Noah and Braison were absent from the nuptials - fuelling speculation of a rift at the time. According to a insider, Noah's absence at the wedding was not by choice, but the result of Tish failing to invite her. Us Weekly then published a report claiming Tish, had 'stolen' Dominic from Noah, 24, who was said to be 'seeing' the actor when her mother began to pursue him. 'Noah has always craved the attention because she did not get it growing up. Tish was always so Miley-sided because that is where the money was,' the source claimed. 'Miley and Tish are like sisters and Noah has always been envious of this because she's never had a connection with Tish like Miley has.' However, it was then claimed that Noah 'never dated' Dominic and she was accused by family insiders of 'fabricating' the relationship to 'paint herself as the victim' in her ongoing feud with Tish.

Miley Cyrus heckled for ‘scamming' fans at premiere – but supporters hit back
Miley Cyrus' highly anticipated film premiere took a chaotic turn when a furious fan heckled the singer, sparking a storm of viral backlash and online debate. The pop superstar appeared at New York's Beacon Theatre on June 6 for the world premiere of Something Beautiful, a visual album and cinematic companion to her latest record. The hour-long film debuted as part of the Tribeca Film Festival, with Cyrus joined on the red carpet by her creative collaborators and her mother, Tish Cyrus. 'Everybody say 'dysfunctional!'' Miley joked to photographers, posing in a sheer beaded gown as fans gathered to celebrate what was billed as a 'one-of-a-kind pop opera.' However, not everyone in the sold-out audience was clear on what they'd signed up for, so things became even more dysfunctional than Miley had imagined. In a now-viral clip circulating online, a woman in the crowd can be heard yelling: 'We thought this was a concert! We paid $800! Are you actually going to sing?' Handling the moment like a true pro, Miley then launched into an acapella rendition of The Climb. But not everyone was appeased. Other frustrated attendees echoed that sentiment online, claiming they'd been misled into believing the premiere would feature a live performance. 'You scammed us,' wrote TikTok user @catherinegattii. @mitchsipstea added: 'Should've made it more clear prior that it was a film (if you can even call it that). Never felt more scammed paying hundreds for something that was basically a marathon viewing of music videos. Something Beautiful? Something Scammy?' @bhawes99 shared their experience: 'Miley, I flew with 2 daughters from Houston, thinking we would see you perform. This trip is thousands of dollars. This was advertised as a CONCERT. This was a rip off. I want my money back and an apology. FALSE ADVERTISING X100! All the people in the lobby were angry at being scammed.' However, many fans quickly rallied to Miley's defense, blaming the backlash on poor reading comprehension. @TasteOfESV fumed on X: 'This actually pissed me off so bad… how dare you disrespect MILEY CYRUS at her own event bc YOU didn't read what you were buying a ticket for?? She has no obligation to entertain you ungrateful people.' @TheMileyCyrusHQ added: 'The thing is after my experience with the rude fans at Chateau, I would have literally stood up and told her to shut the fuck up. Like I can't take it anymore. Let's normalise Chappell Roaning.' More Trending @MBC0801 posted under a clip of the heckler: 'Explain to me how u thought a film premiere was a concert.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video @xan_jpeg agreed: 'How did they get concert from anything in the promotional materials?' In fairness, the ticketing page did clearly state: 'Fueled by fantasy, Something Beautiful is a one-of-a-kind pop opera featuring thirteen original new songs from the Something Beautiful album. After the Premiere: An exclusive conversation with Miley Cyrus.' Hopefully, after a rocky premiere event, it'll be smooth sailing as the film hits cinemas in the US. Got a story?
