Martin Scorsese admits one of his most iconic 90s films 'has no plot'
Martin Scorsese has opened up about making one of his most iconic films, confessing that it actually has 'no plot'.
The acclaimed director helmed 1995 crime drama Casino, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone, Don Rickles and Frank Vincent, following mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein as he oversees the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas.
It was adapted from a book written by Nick Pileggi, and commands an exhausting run time of nearly three hours.
Unpacking the hit movie, Martin previously said that there was 'no plot at all' to be found within the two hours and 58 minutes, conceding that there's 'a lot of action, a lot of story, but no plot'.
During a Q&A session with Robert ahead of a screening of the flick at Tribeca Film Festival, held at the Beacon Theater on Thursday, moderator W Kamau Bell questioned his remarks, and he stood his ground.
'Yeah, it's a substantial length film,' he said to laughs from the audience. 'We wanted to sustain one note, so to speak, pushing all the way through the length of the picture. Make it feel as if it's like a breathless experience.
'I don't know if the plot was necessary… I often think films that you think about, or things you've read often, if you really examine them, I find that a lot of the films that I [like], let's say Hitchcock's Vertigo, for example, who cares about the plot at this point?
'Also, if you really, really analyze that plot, it's highly improbable!'
'What are we watching it for? You're watching it for other reasons,' Martin continued. 'You're watching it for cinema, color, the actors, the dialog, the mood, the tone and experience…
'What I'm getting at is that I think if you find that you're watching a film for a plot, or you read a book for a plot, unless the characterization is so unique in psychological depth and emotional depth, there's no reason to read it again or see it again, because you know the plot.
'So what's the point?'
In Casino, Robert led the star-studded cast as mobster Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, who was tasked with running a Las Vegas casino.
He was forced to take action when best friend Nicky Santoro's (Joe Pesci) criminal activities – as well as his own romance with con artist Ginger (Sharon Stone) – drew too much attention to their antics.
The movie served as a reunion for Martin, Robert and Joe, who worked together on 1990 film Goodfellas, also adapted from a nonfiction book by Nick.
Discussing the note that Casino was 'adapted from a true story', the director conceded: 'We did have to do a great deal of changing names. It's in the movie, we can't even say Chicago.
'When it cuts back to Chicago, we put 'back home'.'
When asked about whether there was 'pushback' from the mob community, he added: 'No… There were meetings in Vegas with a number of people who told [us] to be careful and remember that these [characters were] based on real people, etc. More Trending
'The point is that the material … is public knowledge and it is apparently factual. We changed the names, we changed so many things. But naturally, those who know the characters it's based upon, they know the truth. These are elements of truth.
'Naturally, there are people, there are families and that sort of thing, and there was some pushback.
'People push back forward, so to speak.'

Robert De Niro has played an adorable prank on one of his oldest friends and most frequent collaborators in a viral moment from this week. The legendary actor, 81, decided to drag his long-time creative partner and Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese, 82, into an ongoing TikTok trend. In recent weeks, the wholesome hashtag #goodnightbro has been doing the rounds on the video-based social media platform, reaching millions of users. As part of the trend, young men are being encouraged to phone up their male friends and wish them a good night's sleep – and maybe they'll chuck in a 'sweet dreams' if they're feeling mushy. However, wholesome as it might be, #goodnightbro is still a prank, and the recipients of the calls are often not expecting to receive good night wishes from their pals. And filmmaker Scorsese was the unwitting recipient of such a call from De Niro, who has starred in 10 of Scorsese's films since their first collaboration in 1973. A video has emerged of Goodfellas director Scorsese looking confused after receiving a call from the legendary actor – the Kundun director was encouraged to answer the call by his daughter Francesca, 25. In the clip, Francesca videos Scorsese answering his phone and asks her dad to 'say hello' to whoever is calling – a request he adheres to before a booming voice (De Niro) says 'Hello?' on the other end. After Scorsese asks if it's 'Bob?' calling, De Niro chuckles to himself, says 'Just calling to say goodnight and sleep tight,' and asks if Scorsese wants to jump on FaceTime. The two them jump on FaceTime and De Niro shows Scorsese a brief glimpse of what he's been watching on TV, before the pair make arrangements to meet up the next day at 6.15 (hopefully PM). Fans have worked out that the Killers of the Flower Moon actor is watching The Wiggles with his two-year-old daughter Gia, whom he shares with his 45-year-old girlfriend Tiffany Chen. Scorsese then says 'Okay, thank you, my love – bye!' before De Niro affectionately blows kisses through the phone while the person recording starts to laugh. After the call is over, the Taxi Driver director speaking to Francesca – who has kept the camera rolling – and admits to finding the whole thing a 'mystery'. When he's told that it's just a TikTok trend for laughs, Scorsese, exasperated, exclaims: 'That's what that was? A trend thing?' The two first worked together on the 1973 film Mean Streets, which was directed by Scorsese and starred De Niro in the leading role. Throughout the 1970s, their working relationship produced films such as Taxi Driver and New York, New York – the latter being a musical drama. In the following decade, the pair worked together on 1980's Raging Bull and the 1982 film The King of Comedy before taking a break from each other for eight years. That hiatus ended in 1990 when they combined for the seminal gangster film Goodfellas, and they soon picked up again for Cape Fear in 1991 and Casino in 1995. The 55-year old looked worlds away from his trademark clean cut look as he was spotted arriving at New York's Beacon Hotel on Saturday. He recently tied the knot with the world-famous American pop star's mother, with their union making headlines at the time. Away from his romantic life, he also got his start on Australian screens with a brief stint as a policeman on long running soap Home And Away. After turns in such shows as Raw FM, Heartbreak High, and Water Rats, he headed stateside where he landed one of his best known roles in a top prison drama. Miley Cyrus' highly anticipated film premiere took a chaotic turn when a furious fan heckled the singer, sparking a storm of viral backlash and online debate.
