Review – Absolute Martian Manhunter #5: Rage of the City
Absolute Martian Manhunter #5 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: This is the only one of the original Absolute books that wasn't intended to be an ongoing series – it was greenlit for six issues, and the rapturous critical and audience response immediately got it greenlit for an extended run. That means it'll be taking a hiatus for a few months after next issue as the second arc gets prepped – but it also means that this book feels very separate from the rest of the line. While it definitely feels like a darker reinvention of Martian Manhunter, it also has an off-kilter edge to it that feels like it could have come out of vintage Vertigo. And as Detective John Jones' life falls apart around him, the city falls with it. Something called the Final Night is descending, seemingly driven by whatever has followed John's hitchhiker over from Mars – and it's taken what already lurks in the heart of man and driven it overdrive with acts of practiced cruelty. The hunters. Via DC Comics. Each issue has escalated this threat more and more, but this issue takes it to an extreme level. What started out as acts of violence driven by minor provocations has descended into acts of planned murder. A serial dog killer stalks the streets. A disgruntled diner waitress grounds up glass into her patrons' burgers. A band of fake paramedics stalks the streets, planning to do twisted surgeries on the injured. And let's just say you'll never look at J'onn's beloved Chocos the same way again after this issue. As John runs himself ragged, trying to follow the trails of psychic hate and stop crimes in their tracks, the threat comes home in a terrifying way that isn't resolved by the end of the issue. There's a claustrophobic sense of all-too-familiar horror that pervades this series from the beginning, and this issue dials the tension up to an almost unbearable level as we get to next issue's climax. This was after the Devon theme park was apparently unable to show valid safety checks to the watchdog during the visit. As part of an ongoing programme of inspections, the HSE attended the site on June 26th. This is part of a wider look at fixed and mobile fairgrounds across the UK to make people more comfortable with theme park safety. It seems that the "declarations of compliance" for some of the attractions were missing. The inspection is part of a wider scheme that was the industry's adopted standard for inspection and certification when it comes to fairgrounds and amusement parks. It was started to improve safety standards and increase confidence from the public in consultation with the HSE. The outlet reported that it stated: "After David Geary of DMG Technical Limited was suspended from the Amusement Device Inspection Procedures Scheme (ADIPS), Declarations of Compliance for the nine rides were missing. "Woodlands Family Theme Park urgently commissioned an inspection body, who produced the Declarations of Compliance required, meaning the rides could reopen with minimal delay." Statement by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) HSE inspector Melissa Lai-Hung explained the park was closed "in the interests of public safety." "This action was taken in the interests of public safety. At this time of year, any enforcement action will cause inconvenience, but it is vital that those who enjoy amusement parks are kept safe and feel reassured. We thank Woodlands for their co-operation to resolve this matter." Meanwhile, Woodlands Family Theme Park said: "We take HSE-related compliance legislation very seriously. As soon as this was brought to our attention, all the rides were reinspected by another registered inspector. We would like to add that at no time would Woodlands ever be involved in anything related to non-compliance of safety. GmbH Berlin Spring 2026 Collection
Even on what was by far the hottest day of the year, guests were hardly bothered by the hour-long delay of the GmbH show. The venue was well air-conditioned and all the seats had backrests. That's almost a miracle at fashion shows these days, but the most convincing reason for putting up with the wait was the anticipation. It's no secret that GmbH is enriching Berlin Fashion Week in every way. The audience is the most high-profile, the fashion is exquisite without exception, and the political message behind it is self-evident. The brand founders Benjamin Alexander Huseby and Serhat Işık are professionals in this regard. 'Emotionally, the last few weeks have been draining. Marked by a lot of pain and sadness,' they said of their work on the show, which began with a minute's silence for the victims in Gaza. But instead of anger and rage, only tangible beauty reached the catwalk. Their thoughts revolved around charity and debt relief, family celebrations, and coming-of-age experiences. Like almost all of their previous shows, it was moving and emotional. In this case, it was divided into three acts, repeatedly interrupted by music, including the score to Hitchcock's Vertigo and a piece by Zeki Müren, Turkey's queer visionary and music star. Huseby and Işık prove the gender flexibility of any wardrobe. They embellished their waist-emphasizing blazers with large knots and bow details at the back, while knee-high leather boots were paired with airy cape shirts and boxer shorts. Lots of satin and skin brought physicality to the fore; while some pants were unbuttoned at the hip bones, most of them were still held together with belts. Even the most formal looks lacked nothing in lightness—feathers and strips of fabric fluttered through the air. Tops made of euro banknotes fastened with small bows had many of the guests pulling out their cell phones. 'Beauty and message must go hand in hand. We want to make beautiful clothes. But if you neglect craftsmanship and quality, the power of the message is completely lost at some point,' said Huseby. Fortunately, this is a fear that these two talented designers don't have to face.

A New Thriller: Visconti's Hitchcock Vertigo Pen Collection
Actors James Stewart as Detective John 'Scottie' Ferguson and Kim Novak as Madeleine Elster in a ... More publicity still for the film 'Vertigo', directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 1958. This year marks the 67th anniversary of Alfred Hitchcock's acclaimed film Vertigo, which some say is one of the best movies of all time and certainly one of the English film director's masterworks. And this anniversary year ushers in some exciting celebrations honoring the psychological thriller and its stars, including James Stewart and Kim Novak, among other well-known actors of that era. Next up is the Vertigo67: Fourth International Film Conference, which will be held at Trinity College Dublin. Slated for August 13 – 15, the event will include presentations by international scholars and artists, and a special screening of the movie will take place at the Lighthouse Cinema. Visconti Pens As Objects of Creativity Visconti Hitchcock Vertigo fountain pen. While pens are often considered tools of the imagination, it's not surprising to me that one of this year's Vertigo-inspired nods is a new pen collection from Italian pen maker Visconti, which captures the spirit of the film – and its director – in its design. And the Visconti Hitchcock Vertigo references an aspect of the film's groundbreaking collateral: the well-known promotional poster designed by legendary American graphic artist Saul Bass, who also created the enthralling title sequence for the film. The poster features a swirling vortex with Stewart and Novak in silhouette, and its dramatic color scheme is echoed by the pen. Bass's designs helped to revolutionize how movies are marketed and how audiences respond to opening credits. Sotheby's said of the artist's poster, 'Amongst his very best work is the legendary design for Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 film Vertigo, which incorporated a distinctive spiral graphic element to convey a dizzying sense of disorientation.' A poster for Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 psychological thriller, 'Vertigo', starring James Stewart and ... More Kim Novak. An interesting two-tone enamel engraving in black and ivory coils around the vibrant orange resin of the fountain pen and rollerball, recalling the poster's hypnotic motif - a metaphor for the film's mind-bending complexity. The cap is decorated with an engraved and enameled likeness of Hitchhock's bold signature, and the pens are accented with polished palladium metal trim and a white-enamel Visconti finial. The central ring is engraved and enameled with both the Visconti logo and Hitchcock's renowned profile. Here, too, is the emblem of the Alfred Hitchcock Foundation, established to preserve and promote the legacy of the filmmaker and director. There are just 958 pieces in the collection – a tribute to the year in which the movie was released. More Details The Hitchcock Vertigo fountain pen is fitted with a steel nib available in fine, medium and broad sizes; it is filled by cartridge or converter and is priced at $550. The rollerball pen is priced at $525. Both pens have magnetic caps. Viscconti was founded in Florence in 1988 by pen collectors Dante Del Vecchio and Luigi Poli with a goal of creating writing instruments that not only write well, but also explore the outer limits of pen design. The company's evolution has included new principals and new pens, such as the Hitchcock Vertigo, that are an homage to the broader context of creativity. Other limited editions currently available include the iconic Homo Sapiens and the Van Gogh collection, each of which – like the movie – set a new standard.
