Ally McCoist blasts ‘people are trying to justify being there' as controversial moment leaves Rangers icon fuming
THE English Premier League was back with a bang this weekend. And so too was VAR. 4 Ebere Eze saw a stunning free-kick chalked-off Credit: Getty 4 Referee Darren England explained his decision to the crowd Credit: Getty Advertisement 4 The VAR call has proved highly contentious Credit: AFP 4 The decision was debated on talkSPORT Credit: YOUTUBE/TALKSPORT A highly entertaining opening weekend down south saw plenty of goals and drama - as well as some controversial refereeing. No decisions were more contentious than the one that ruled out a stunning Ebere Eze free-kick for Crystal Palace against Chelsea. Advertisement The wonderstrike looked to have given the Eagles a 13th minute 1-0 lead at Stamford Bridge. That was until referee Darren England was dispatched to the pitchside monitor by VAR James Bell, although nobody was really sure why. The ref then studied the footage at the screen before heading back out onto the pitch. As is now the new norm in the league, the official then explained his decision to the crowd. Advertisement England told the stadium and TV viewers: "After review, away number six is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken. "Therefore, it's an indirect free-kick and a disallowed goal." Palace captain Marc Guehi, the 'away number six' referred to, could be seen slap back in the centre of the picture jostling with Chelsea's Moises Caicedo - a player who was NOT forming part of the wall. At the moment Eze strikes the ball, Guehi has moved a couple of yards to the right towards the three-man wall. Ally McCoist meets Sir Alex Ferguson in new TNT Sports show Ally's Social Club And that's what he was pulled up for - and NOT the jostling with Caicedo. Advertisement The International Football Association Board (IFAB) Law 13 says that attacking players must be at least one metre away from a defensive wall until the ball is in play. It's been part of football's laws since 2019. While the decision may ultimately have been correct in law, it's left fans and pundits alike furious. Many have been left feeling that it robbed Eze of a stunning goal. The decision was heavily discussed on talkSPORT Breakfast, with Rangers legend Ally McCoist joined by Jeff Stelling. Advertisement Asked be co-presenter Shebahn Aherne if he was aware of the law, Stelling blasted back: "It's six years old, how many times has it been implemented. you heard of it Coisty?" Ibrox icon McCoist is in no doubt that the goal should've stood. he replied: No, never heard of it. I've got to be brutally honest with you. "It was a real surprise to me. Let's be honest about it, it was a brilliant strike, it was a goal. Simple as that. "I've never heard of it but therefore the law says it's not a goal." Advertisement Fuming Stelling continued: "Late in the game when there was another free kick, (the referee) Darren England put a white mark down with his magic spray between the wall and the next player. "I've never seen that in a Premier League game before. It strikes me that James Bell the VAR and Darren England are just getting ridiculously fussy. "It might be a law but it's a law that nobody knows. And by the way, get rid of it. Get rid of it." McCoist then doubled down on his assertion that the goal should have stood, and also hit out at the officials for getting involved. He said: "If we're ruling goals out for that, to make matters worse, a great goal as well. Advertisement "I agree with Jeff as well I think sometimes people are just trying to justify bein there, their job. Just get on with the game." The disallowed strike was a close to a goal as the game saw. It finished goalless. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Sky Sports pundit ‘amazed' Eze is still at Crystal Palace – and says Spurs should go all out for the ‘world class' attacker
Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp says he is 'amazed' that Ebere Eze is still at Crystal Palace. Tottenham are in talks to sign the attacking midfielder, but he was included in the Palace squad to face Chelsea on Sunday despite reports he was set to be left out while negotiations with Spurs are ongoing. Arsenal have also been keen on the 27-year-old, though it appears their north London rivals are leading the race to sign him. And speaking to Hayters TV at Sky Sports' launch event for the new Premier League season, Redknapp says Spurs should commit to spending big on Eze. 'You've lost James Maddison so when they played against PSG, there were predominantly three defensive midfield players,' he explained. 'They need someone that's going to be able to unlock the door. If they were to get maybe Eze, I think he'd be magnificent. 'I'm still amazed that he's not left Crystal Palace and someone hasn't paid up. Whether it's Arsenal, whether it's Tottenham. He is a world-class player. He's so talented. I'm amazed that nobody has gone and spent the money on him. 'They wouldn't regret it because he's got that lovely confidence when he plays. He's one of the best players to watch and I think he could play for any side in the world.' Spurs got their new Premier League campaign off to a winning start under boss Thomas Frank and Redknapp, who spent three years at Tottenham, has backed him to improve the side, though says patience will be important too. 'They couldn't be less competitive,' he said. 'They were really disappointing. 'I watched the game on Wednesday night and I thought they were brilliant against PSG. They were aggressive, they were fast, they got after them, they were very well organised. A lot of the things that we didn't see last year with defensive set-pieces and attacking set-pieces. 'So Thomas Frank will do a really good job there. He's a good guy, he knows what he's doing, but I think you still have to be a bit patient here. I think there's a lot to do.'

Eberechi Eze expected to START for Crystal Palace as Tottenham fail to fully agree deal while Arsenal still in mix
EBERECHI EZE is now expected to START for Crystal Palace at Chelsea despite Tottenham pushing for a deal. Spurs are keen to land the Palace midfielder for £55million and there were doubts on Saturday over whether he would be available for Palace at Stamford Bridge as an agreement looked close. 3 3 There were considerations over leaving the England man out of Oliver Glasner's squad for the opening game of the season. But with no deal fully agreed with Tottenham, Eze is now expected to be in the starting XI for the London derby. The 27-year-old has two years remaining on his deal at Crystal Palace and wants to turn out for Palace while he is still their player. Arsenal have also expressed interest in a deal for Eze, though their interest appears to have cooled in recent weeks and no firm bid has been made. Tottenham are looking to sign both Eze and Manchester City winger Savinho. Savinho was left out of Manchester City 's squad at Wolves on Saturday, with the club valuing him at £67m. Marc Guehi is also expected to captain the Eagles, with Liverpool having expressed interest in the defender. The Premier League champions remain short of Palace's valuation on Guehi, who has a year left on his deal and is prepared to stay another year and run it down. 3 Asked about both ahead of today's game, Glasner said: 'Marc has trained the entire week with us, every single training session, the same with Ebs. 'They've prepared the best way for the Chelsea game on Sunday afternoon. 'I've been in the football business for too long, so I know that at any time of any day, things can happen. "If you ask me now, I expect both Marc and Ebs to start on Sunday.'

Eberechi Eze to be left out of Crystal Palace squad to face Chelsea as England star closes in on Tottenham move
EBERECHI EZE is expecting not to feature for Crystal Palace against Chelsea on Sunday as Tottenham push for his signing. Spurs are in talks over clinching a move for the England star, and though a deal is yet to be agreed, there is optimism it can be struck soon. 2 2 As a result, sources close to Eze believe he will not play in Palace's Premier League season-opener at Stamford Bridge. The North Londoners are in desperate need for a new No10 with James Maddison set to miss most of the season with a serious knee injury. Thomas Frank wanted a new playmaker even before Maddison damaged his anterior cruciate ligament against Newcastle in preseason. Spurs came close to landing Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest before a stunning U-turn saw him sign a new contract at the City Ground. Eze, 27, has been a long-term target for Spurs and the player is keen to join so he can realise his dream of playing Champions League football. He scored twice against Tottenham in May the week before he struck the FA Cup final winner against Manchester City. Spurs' arch-rivals Arsenal have also been interested in Eze but their interest is understood to have cooled after Ethan Nwaneri signed a new contract. The Gunners see Eze, who can play wide left, as primarily a No. 10, where they already have Martin Odegaard and Nwaneri. A late move to the Emirates has not been completely ruled out at this stage, but is viewed as unlikely. THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY.. Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta faces £68m deal deadline as Gunners boss takes new role
Mikel Arteta has strengthened his Arsenal squad over the summer but last season's Premier League runners-up could have a bit more business to come between now and September 1 Arsenal have been one of the busiest Premier League teams this summer but their spending might not be over just yet. The Gunners have an A to Z of new signings - Arrizabalaga to Zubimendi, to be precise - but there will still be two weeks of the window to go after they begin their Premier League campaign against Manchester United on Sunday. The goal is to sign a player capable ot creating from deep and playing off the left of the front three in certain circumstances. More specifically, the goal is Ebere Eze, but things might not be straightforward. Manager Mikel Arteta indicated the spending isn't over if the right opportunity arrives. However, in order to meet Crystal Palace's asking price for Eze, they might need to raise funds through sales. Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos have both left, while Thomas Partey's release has freed up significant wage budget. Fabio Vieira, Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior could yet follow. There are two deadlines in place for Arsenal, though - not just September 1, when the window shuts. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from North London. Eze release clause deadline Arsenal only have until Friday to meet Ebere Eze's release clause at Crystal Palace. A bid of £68m would be enough to land the England star now, though Palace may yet accept a similar amount after the deadline. Moves for Fabio Vieira and Leandro Trossard are the most realistic sources of the funds for a move. Stuttgart want Vieira, with a fee of around £16m mooted, while Trossard has previously attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League. Funds could also be raised from other sources, with interest in Jakub Kiwior, Karl Hein and Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Gunners are also open to offloading Reiss Nelson, though no club has met their asking price. Arteta takes off-field role Mikel Arteta will be back in the dugout on Sunday as Arsenal kick off their league campaign. Before that, though, the Spaniard has been confirmed as brand ambassador and director of performance with sports brand Under Armour. 'The collaboration with Under Armour is the perfect opportunity for me to work with a partner committed to making young athletes better," Arteta said in a statement. 'I'm passionate about providing a platform for the next generation of players coming through in football and the top level of talent already signed with the brand demonstrates that Under Armour is too. 'We share the same mentality in always striving for more by finding new ways to innovate and disrupt the game at the top level. Our values in pursuing greatness are closely aligned and together, I'm confident we're going to achieve great things in football.' Eze told to turn down Arsenal Ebere Eze is understood to favour a move to Arsenal over joining rivals Spurs. However, former Gunners star Theo Walcott isn't convinced the move would be the right one for him. "I think the big question or the big thing we've got to look at is that it is World Cup year," Walcott said on It's Called Soccer. "As a player, if it's a World Cup year, I'm thinking, 'I'm going to play consistently for Palace this year, so if I'm Eze, for instance, my thought process: obviously Arsenal is a different kind of pressure." He suggested Eze would have different responsibilities if he moves, adding: "The good thing thing about Eze's situation is that he can play every week and he has that maverick style that he accepts making and taking those risks. I think he's a player that can take those risks at Palace. I don't think he will get that at Arsenal."
