April NASCAR Power Rankings: Kyle Larson takes No. 1 spot

Here is a look at the top drivers in April and some of the memorable moments in the sport last month. April Power Rankings 1. Kyle Larson (Last month 3rd) Larson scored a dominating win at Bristol, leading 411 of 500 laps, won three stages (two at Bristol and one at Talladega) and ranked first in the series in stage points scored in April with 39. He followed the Bristol win with a second-place finish at Talladega. That was enough to offset his Darlington stumble when he spun in the early laps and damaged his car. His team needed about 160 laps to repair the vehicle before he returned tot he race. Even with that incident, Larson ranked third in the series in points scored in April with 115. 2. William Byron (2nd) He did not win a race in April but scored the most points (130). Byron finished second at Darlington after leading the first 243 laps, placed sixth at Bristol and was third at Talladega. He won two stages in the month. 3. Denny Hamlin (5th) He ranked second for the month in points scored with 119. He won at Darlington, finished second at Bristol and was 21st at Talladega. He had 28 stage points in the month. 4. Austin Cindric (NR) The Talladega winner ranked fourth in points scored for the month with 97. He also finished 11th at Darlington and 17th at Bristol in the month. 5. Ty Gibbs (NR) He had two top 10s in the the three April races, placing third at Bristol and ninth at Darlington. His other finish was 17th at Talladega. He moved from 31st to 22nd in the standings with his 92-point performance in April. Those just missing the top five Chase Elliott — He scored 90 points in April, notching finishes of eighth (Darlington), 15th (Bristol) and fifth (Talladega). Advertisement Tyler Reddick — He scored 90 points in April with finishes of fourth (Darlington), 14th (Talladega) and 18th (Bristol). Joey Logano vs. … The month started with Ross Chastain saying he was 'confused' by what Joey Logano said about him after the Martinsville race and that to 'call me those names is not appreciated. Not warranted I don't think.' Logano was critical of how Chastain raced at Martinsville and said: 'He just races like a jackass every week and I keep paying the price. I'm sick of paying the price.' Chastain responded a few days later by saying: 'Honestly, pretty disappointing that the would do that, to take feelings he had from COTA and other races and then take Martinsville and get out and just blast that.' NASCAR Cup Series EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix - Qualifying Ross Chastain calls Joey Logano's comments about him at Martinsville 'pretty disappointing' Advertisement Ross Chastain discussed Wednesday the comments Joey Logano made last weekend. The month ended with Logano finding himself in a feud with Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones. It started when Logano ranted on the radio about teammate Austin Cindric not helping him win stage 2 at Talladega, allowing Bubba Wallace to do so. Jones criticized Logano on social media for not being a proper team player by criticizing Cindric in such a manner. Logano wasn't aware of Jones' comments until told so during an appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Logano's response? 'Has Chipper Jones ever driven a race car at Talladega? That would be my first question. I'm pretty certain he hasn't.' Joey Logano responds to Chipper Jones' criticism over radio rant about Austin Cindric at Talladega Advertisement Joey Logano told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that he and Austin Cindric have talked about what happened at the end of stage two at Talladega. Stat of the month 71.8% Percentage of the 985 laps run in April that Hendrick Motorsports drivers led. Social media moment of the month Scott Graves, crew chief for Chris Buescher, wasn't pleased with Denny Hamlin at Talladega. Hamlin's push turned Christopher Bell into Chris Buescher and both cars wrecked off Turn 2 on a restart. Graves went to social media to criticize Hamlin while also noting Hamlin's sponsor for the race, Progressive Insurance. Looking ahead to May May 4 — Texas Advertisement May 11 — Kansas May 18 — All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro May 24 — Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte All three points races in May will be at 1.5-mile tracks. Those types of tracks have provided some of the best racing with the Next Gen. The May 11 race at Kansas Speedway will mark the final track in the regular season that also will host a playoff race. Already, the series has raced at playoff tracks at Darlington, Bristol, Las Vegas, Talladega, Martinsville and Phoenix. Also, Kyle Larson will attempt to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on May 24. Weather thwarted his effort last year and he ran in only the Indy 500.

For the third time this year, the energy drink brand will sponsor a Trackhouse Racing entry. The team owned by Justin Marks announced on Thursday that Connor Zilisch will return to the Nascar Cup Series on Memorial Day Weekend to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 in the No. 87 Chevrolet with Red Bull as the primary sponsor. 'It's awesome to have the opportunity to race in one of Nascar's coolest events,' Zilisch said in a statement. 'The Charlotte 600 is one of the most prestigious races in Nascar. It's going to be a physical and mental challenge because that race is so tough. I'm very appreciative for (Trackhouse owner and founder) Justin (Marks) and everyone at Red Bull for their support and turning this opportunity into a reality.' Zilisch made his Cup Series debut at Circuit of the Americas earlier this year. He finished 37th after being involved in a crash. Red Bull announced it will have an expanded precense on Shane van Gisbergen's No. 88 Chevrolet throughout the season. After sponsoring van Gisbergen at Las Vegas, the brand will be on his car at Sonoma, Iowa, Daytona and Kansas. Until this year, Red Bull had not been a primary sponsor on a Nascar Cup Series car since Red Bull Racing shut down at the end of the 2011 season. The team competed from 2007 through the end of 2011, winning races with Brian Vickers and Kasey Kahne. Zilisch is competing full time in the Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports. He has already locked in a spot for the playoffs via a win at COTA. He has spent the first part of his rookie season honing in on his craft at oval tracks. Last weekend at Martinsville, he led 100 of 256 laps after sitting on the pole. Van Gisbergen, meanwhile, is competing for the Rookie of the Year Award, but he has struggled to adjust to full-time Cup competition. He is 34th in the standings after seven races, with four straight finishes of 31st or worse.

Stubbs: Kyle Busch's latest near miss proof young guns have sped by

March 6 - It's a story as old as time. At some point in every athlete's life, they start to slow down. Their younger counterparts begin to take charge. The once venerable legends become vulnerable to the point that any success is no longer booed and ridiculed, but cheered and celebrated. That's where two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch finds himself following Sunday's race at Circuit of the Americas. Busch entered the third race of the 2025 season on a 59-race winless streak, but you wouldn't know it by the way he drove on Sunday. For the first time in nearly two years, Busch dominated a race. He looked every bit the 63-time Cup Series race winner who is well on his way to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. That was until Christopher Bell, a newer star nine years Busch's junior, had something to say about it. With five laps to go in the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix, Bell passed Busch for the race lead. With older tires and an ailing race car, Busch could only watch as Bell drove away. Busch crossed the line fifth on a day where he led 42 laps and was by far the fastest man in Texas. On the surface, Busch's heartbreaking defeat is just that: another race included on a career-worst drought for one of NASCAR's greatest drivers of all time. If you dig a little, however, it's an impending warning that Busch may soon find himself in the same position as other former greats. Richard Petty had won 200 NASCAR Cup Series races and seven championships by the end of the 1984 season. Over the next eight years, he would go winless and finish in the top-10 in points only once. In 1989 and 1992, Petty failed to finish a single race inside the top-10. The King's tumble from the top of the heap was anything but graceful, as the likes of Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace fought their own Revolutionary War to get NASCAR's once-sovereign ruler off his throne. Like Petty, Jimmie Johnson also found his way to the championship stage. Over 19 full-time seasons, Johnson won 83 races and put together one of the greatest dynasties in NASCAR history from 2006 to 2010, winning five consecutive titles. But Father Time doesn't care about rings or trophies. After winning at Dover in June 2017, Johnson went winless for the final three and a half years of his career. In 2019 and 2020, Johnson missed the playoffs entirely. It was a shocking regression for a driver that at one point seemed unbeatable. Nearly a decade after he won the first of his two Cup Series championships, Busch seems to be moving down the same path as Petty and Johnson. In 2024, he missed the playoffs and suffered the first winless season of his career. His performance at COTA on Sunday was a glimpse of the driver that used to be, but as little as five years ago, everyone would've expected Busch to hold off Bell for the win, even in adverse conditions. Such are the expectations placed on a generational talent such as Busch. COTA wasn't the first close call for Busch over the course of his winless streak. At Daytona in August 2024, Parker Retzlaff pushed Harrison Burton past Busch on the final lap, leaving Busch to settle for second. A week later, the Southern 500 at Darlington marked the end of the regular season. Busch was forced to settle for another runner-up finish as Chase Briscoe took the win. At Kansas in September, Busch was leading in Stage 3 when he spun with 33 laps to go. Once again, the stars didn't align. Sunday's race at COTA can easily be classified as Busch's best performance of the Next-Gen era. His average running position was a stellar 2.14. His pit crew was flawless, as were crew chief Randall Burnett's calls atop the pit box. Unfortunately for Busch, Bell was slightly better when it counted most. Bell's race-winning pass was one Joe Gibbs saw Busch make time after time when Busch drove Gibbs' No. 18. On Sunday, Gibbs was on the other side of the coin, rooting Bell on to victory. At 39 years old, Busch likely won't retire anytime in the next two to three years. He'll have plenty of chances to snag another win and break the longest drought of his career, but he must take advantage when the opportunities arise. Busch isn't the same driver he was five years ago, and NASCAR's young crop of talent is getting better by the day. On the surface, Sunday's race was a battle between a flashy young gun and a crafty veteran, but below the surface, it was a changing of the guard that proved Busch likely won't ever return to the heights he once reached.
