Bears, Kyler Gordon agree to 3-year, extension, making him highest-paid CB: Sources

The Chicago Bears agreed to a three-year contract extension with nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon, league sources said. The first draft pick of general manager Ryan Poles' tenure, Gordon is under contract thru 2028. Last season, Gordon played in 15 games with 13 starts and had five passes defensed, four tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries. In 13 games in 2023, he had two picks and six passes defensed. He has established himself as one of the game's best slot corners, and this contract is paying him that way. Advertisement As first reported by ESPN, the $40 million deal with $31.25 million guaranteed makes Gordon the highest-paid slot cornerback. Gordon, nicknamed 'Spider-Man,' began his career as a full-time corner, playing outside in base defense and then inside in the nickel. The Bears shifted him to a full-time nickel corner, and that paid dividends, as he has consistently made big plays against the run and pass. Before an injury, Gordon had five tackles for two yards or less in London last season, including one behind the line of scrimmage. His four 'run stuffs' for zero yards tied for second among all corners in football, per TruMedia. When coach Ben Johnson was hired, one of the first Bears players he mentioned was Gordon, whom he called 'a phenomenal nickel.' At the league meetings two weeks ago in Florida, Poles said a Gordon extension was a priority. 'I know Kyler is a guy that we want to be part of this moving forward,' he said. Gordon was voted the Bears' Ed Block Courage Award winner for this past season. While he has yet to put together a full season because of injuries, none have been major, and when he's been on the field, he's been very effective. 'Kyler Gordon is an outstanding nickel player,' new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen said in January. 'I have a vision for how we can utilize him.'

Commanders' trainer rewarded for courageous battle

Wednesday, the Commanders announced their 2025 Ed Block Courage Award recipient. The Commanders' winner last year (2024) was safety Jeremy Reaves. This time, the Commanders did not name a player or a coach. On Wednesday, the Commanders announced the winner as head trainer Al Bellamy. Advertisement Bellamy receiving the award is not simply a result of the Commanders moving the award around to various departments of the organization. Last year, when the recipient was named, the organization declared, "Each December, NFL teams vote for the player from their team who is a role model in courage, inspiration and sportsmanship." But, word is, it was head coach Dan Quinn who nominated Bellamy, not a player, and for solid reason. Last year, Bellamy was diagnosed with cancer. Despite treatments and illness, Bellamy continued to strive to work hard and contribute to the Commanders' 2024 success. Searching online, any word of Bellamy's diagnosis is virtually impossible to locate. "His dedication and commitment to the Washington Commanders was evident, as the team is proud to honor him with the Honorary Ed Block Courage Award for his perseverance in the face of the harshest battle," the Ed Block Foundation wrote. Advertisement Block was an athletic trainer for the old Baltimore Colts from the 1954-1977 seasons after serving as a U.S. Army officer in World War II. He was also a physical therapist for disabled children in Baltimore. The NFL began presenting the award during the 1984 season, and the Redskins' first recipient was offensive tackle Mark May. Some other notable Washington Redskins / Commanders to have been voted to receive the award were: Doug Williams 1988 Joe Jacoby 1990 Don Warren 1991 Art Monk 1993 Mark Schlereth 1994 Darrell Green 1998 Chris Samuels 2002 Marcus Washington 2007 Robert Griffin 2013 DeAngelo Hall 2017 Alex Smith 2019 Brandon Scherff 2020 Brian Robinson Jr 2022 Jeremy Reaves 2024 This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Commanders HC nominated head trainer Al Bellamy for courage award.

Chandler family forced out of home after sewage water leak

CHANDLER, Texas (KETK) – A family in Chandler has been forced to temporarily move out of their home after they say it was flooded with sewage water. Longview officer injured in weekend shooting released from hospital, recovering at home The Britt family moved into their house on Haley Lane around eight years ago. Now, they've been forced to leave their home after sewage from a clogged city line backed up on to their property. The mother of the Britt family, Darla, spoke about how she discovered unsanitary water coming out of her toilets and bathtubs. 'We checked both toilets, and then we noticed what was coming up in the bathtubs and the toilet, and it was dirty water,' Britt said. East Texas native DeMarvion Overshown honored with Ed Block Courage Award The smelly and dirty water started overflowing and flooding into her bathroom. 'So, we started grabbing towels and mopping them up,' Britt said. 'We used all 18 towels just to mop them up, and we turned the water off in both bathrooms.' It was only after the water stopped flowing that they found out it was actually waste from a sewer line. 'They got out, I think about 25 gallons worth of water out of my bathroom,' Britt said. A police report provided by the mayor reveals city workers discovered water backed up in the main line up the street. 'The main sewer line that runs that serves this area is right here by Mrs. Britt's home. It got clogged, and it caused it to back up into this home,' Chandler Mayor Cy Ditzler said. The mayor said he is doing what he can to get this problem resolved for them and other properties affected. 'The first thing you do is protect your citizens,' Ditzler said. 'That's what my job as the mayor of Chandler is: to answer all calls from our citizens, no matter who they are or where they are and to protect them by being their voice.' Britt said her family took their issue to Tuesday's city council meeting where the council decided to table the issue until insurance information is secured. The mayor was tasked with spearheading community funding in the meantime. 'They do have a GoFundMe page and I hope that everybody that hears this interview reaches out and finds out how to help,' Ditzler said. The line has been cleared of debris, according to the mayor, but unless something changes soon, it could happen again. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Cowboys to bring back former player, assistant coach for third stint with team

The Cowboys continue to round out their coaching staff for first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Their latest hire will be donning the star for a third time, both as a player and a coach. Carlos Polk will reportedly be tabbed as the team's assistant special teams coach, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. Polk has spent the past three seasons in that same role with the Bears. Polk had previously interviewed for the Cowboys' special teams coordinator position. That job ultimately went to the 49ers' Nick Sorensen on Jan. 28; Polk will now work directly under Sorensen…. for the second time in his career. Told Carlos Polk will be the Cowboys' assistant special teams coach. He interviewed for the special teams coordinator job. He was the Cowboys' assistant special teams coach in 2019. Has been with Jacksonville, Chicago since then. — Todd Archer (@toddarcher) February 10, 2025 Polk, who will turn 48 later this month, has been with five NFL teams- all as a special teams assistant- since 2010. He was with Dallas in 2019, the final year of the Jason Garrett regime. Prior to that, he served on staff with the Chargers and Buccaneers; after not being retained by Mike McCarthy in 2020, Polk was out of the game for year. He returned to the sidelines in 2021 in Jacksonville, where he was Sorensen's special teams assistant coordinator the first time, for the Jaguars' 2021 season, before finally landing in Chicago in 2022. [affiliatewidget_smgtolocal] As a player, Polk was listed as a linebacker but made the majority of his impact on special teams over eight NFL seasons. Drafted by San Diego in the fourth round out of Nebraska in 2001, Polk was named Special Teams Player of the Year by his Chargers teammates the following season. In 2006, a four-game stretch where he filled in for Shawne Merriman helped him earn the team's Ed Block Courage Award. The next year, he shared the club's Most Inspirational Player Award with quarterback Philip Rivers. But Polk did not make the Chargers roster in 2008, and he found himself on the free agency market. That's when the Cowboys came calling, reuniting him with head coach Wade Phillips, who had been his defensive coordinator in San Diego. A depth signing by Dallas, Polk did contribute on special teams but was not re-signed after the 2008 campaign, spelling the end of his playing career. Now back in Dallas in a familiar role and under a coordinator he knows well, Polk will help head up a unit that includes Pro Bowl kicker Brandon Aubrey and All-Pro returner KaVontae Turpin as well as special teams standouts C.J. Goodwin, Israel Mukuamu, Nick Vigil, Juanyeh Thomas, and Markquese Bell.
