Eda Ezrin's freedom hopes dim as Thai prosecutors appeal drug case
KOTA BARU: Dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin is unlikely to be released next week, as Thai prosecutors are expected to file an appeal in her drug case and those of five other Malaysians. The prosecution is seeking to fix a trial date before the appeal period ends on Aug 6, sources told NST. "The prosecutors have brought the appeal to the central court and are expected to refer the case back to the original court — the Narathiwat Provincial Court for a retrial," said the sources. The sources said the prosecution is likely to open a new case file against all six individuals but the nature of the new charges remains unclear at this point. In March, the Narathiwat Provincial Court acquitted Eda Ezrin and five others of possession of methamphetamine pills. The decision was made by a panel of two judges in a 30-minute trial at the court. For the drug consumption charge, the judge handed each of them a six-month jail sentence and a fine of 4,000 baht (RM526). However, they were not required to serve the jail sentences or pay the fines as they had already been held in Narathiwat Prison for more than four months. Eda Ezrin whose real name is Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, along with five others were arrested in Sungai Golok last November. However, the prosecution filed an appeal and was granted a five-month extension, which is set to expire next month. The case has drawn public attention in both Thailand and Malaysia, with legal observers watching closely as the deadline for the appeal approaches in eight days.

Close relatives get 15 minutes only with 6 Malaysians in south Thailand jail once a week
KOTA BARU: Families of six Malaysians, including singer Eda Ezrin who is serving time in Narathiwat Provincial Prison in south Thailand, are allowed to visit them once a week only. Narathiwat prison's director Superintendent Surin Chantep said the visits were scheduled every Thursday. "Only immediate family members, such as parents, are allowed. Distant relatives are not encouraged to visit," he said, adding that each visit is limited to 15 minutes. He added inmates were also allowed to order food through the prison's management. Surin gave his assurance that all inmates, including Malaysians, were treated well and provided with sufficient food and basic necessities. Eda Ezrin, whose real name is Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, 30, her husband Mohd Affendi Ahmad, 35, and their friends Eridieka Mohd Noor, 33, Mohamad Alif Deraman, 33, Nur Aida Mamat, 33 and Zuhaira Nasrin, 26, had been in jail for almost nine months. The six were caught in possession of 6,059 methamphetamine pills. In March, the Narathiwat Court found them not guilty of jointly possessing the pills with intent to sell and allowed the Thai prosecution to appeal. The appeal had been extended four times with the latest one-month period granted by the court expected to end on Aug 6.

Eda Ezrin's drug case moved to Songkhla Court of Appeal
PETALING JAYA: The drug case involving popular Kelantan singer Eda Ezrin, or Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, 30, along with her husband and four friends, has been transferred to the Court of Appeal in Songkhla. According to sources, the decision was made at the request of the Thai prosecutor as the singer of 'Bae Soba Bae', her husband, and four friends are currently detained at Narathiwat Provincial Prison awaiting further legal proceedings. Sinar Harian reported on June 5 that the fate of Eda Ezrin, her husband, and four friends may be determined by the Supreme Court of Thailand. Citing a spokesperson for the Narathiwat Provincial Court stated that this situation is not impossible based on previous cases. "With the large quantity of drugs seized... yes, this case is expected to be brought to the Court of Appeal, and possibly even to the Supreme Court. It will certainly take years to resolve. If acquitted, they will all be free; if guilty, all will be imprisoned. "Many drugs were seized but no one confessed. This is what the prosecutor will prove. If one or two admit, the others will be freed," he said. Previously, Sinar Harian reported that Eda Ezrin, along with her husband and four friends, were released from prison after being acquitted of charges of possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills found in a hotel room in Golok on November 1 last year. The decision was made by a panel of two judges after reviewing all prosecution witness testimonies during three days of case mention proceedings on Feb 11, 13, and 14. However, all the Malaysians returned to Narathiwat Provincial Prison despite being acquitted of possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills on Thursday June 29). This action allows the prosecution to appeal the court's decision to acquit all the Malaysians. Eda Ezrin's defence lawyer, Sufian Abdul Aziz, stated that the prosecutor could file an appeal within one to four months.

Dikir Barat singer Eda Ezrin's drug case moved to Songkhla Appeal Court
KOTA BARU: The drug case involving popular dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin, along with five other Malaysians, has been transferred to the Middle Appeal Court in Songkhla. The legal proceedings involving the 30-year-old singer were transferred to the Songkhla Appeal Court earlier this month following a request by Thai prosecutors. However, Eda Ezrin known for her hit song 'Bae Soba Bae' and the five others, including her husband, remain in custody at Narathiwat prison pending further legal proceedings. Last November, Eda Ezrin and the others were detained in Thailand for possession of 6,000 yaba pills. A source said the Narathiwat Provincial Court had approved the prosecution's application to transfer the appeal proceedings. "The case involving the popular dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin has been transferred to the Middle Appeal Court in Songkhla recently. "But the six Malaysians will remain in Narathiwat court's detention," said the source. On June 6, the Narathiwat Provincial Cour t approved a fourth application by the prosecution to extend the appeal period concerning the group's release over charges of jointly possessing the drugs. Eda Ezrin whose full name is Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail; her husband, Mohd Affendi Ahmad, 35; and their friends, Eridieka Mohd Noor, 33; Mohamad Alif Deraman, 33; Nur Aida Mamat, 33; and Zuhaira Nasrin, 26, will remain in custody during this extended period which will ends on July 6. The court on March 6 found them not guilty of jointly possessing methamphetamine pills with intent to sell. However, they continued to be held in custody after prosecutors were granted additional time to decide on filing an appeal. In Thailand, courts are organised into three tiers: Courts of First Instance, Courts of Appeal (Middle Courts) and the Supreme Court. The Middle Court is in Songkhla and it is called the Songkhla Provincial Court of Appeal or commonly referred to as a middle court. Its handles appeals from lower courts (first instance) within its jurisdiction and the typical cases include criminal appeals, civil appeals and administrative appeals from the lower courts. The middle court reviews decisions from trial courts (provincial and municipal courts) to ensure proper application of the law. It does not conduct full trials, but rather hears arguments based on the record and written submissions. If a party is not satisfied with the decision of this middle court, they may appeal further to the Supreme Court of Thailand. Court of Appeal (Songkhla) usually gives a verdict within three months, but in practice, it may take six to eight months in southern provinces.

Narathiwat court extends Eda Ezrin's detention for fourth time
KOTA BARU: The Narathiwat Provincial Court today granted a further one-month extension of detention against Malaysian dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin, marking the fourth such extension since her arrest in November last year. A court spokesperson said the decision followed a formal application by the Thai prosecution on May 30. The new remand period starts today and will expire on July 6. The extension also applies to the five other Malaysians detained alongside Eda, including her husband. The six were arrested by Thai police for their alleged involvement in the possession of 6,059 yaba pills - a type of methamphetamine popular in Thailand and neighbouring countries. "Investigations by the Thai prosecutors are still ongoing, and the extended detention is to facilitate further enquiries, as prosecutors consider whether to appeal a previous court decision that acquitted the group of the drug possession charges at other courts, including the High Court," said the spokesperson. In March this year, the Narathiwat Court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to directly link Eda and the others to the narcotics found during a raid in Sungai Golok in November 2024. However, they were each sentenced to six months' jail and fined 4,000 baht (approximately RM520) for drug consumption—a sentence they had effectively served. The fines were later waived. Despite the acquittal, the group has not been released, as the prosecution still retains the right to appeal. Eda's mother, Zaharah Mamat, has publicly voiced her frustration and concern, revealing that she had sold personal belongings—including gold jewellery worth over RM26,000—to help cover mounting legal costs that now exceed RM65,000. The case continues to draw public attention in Malaysia.
