IU defamation case: Woman accused of slander faces additional 3 million KRW fine for repeated offence
In a recent court ruling, a woman in her 40s was held accountable for her actions against IU, which included posting defamatory comments about her. While presenting the verdict, the court took into consideration the woman's prior conviction for a similar offense against the singer in 2022. As a result, the offender was ordered to pay a hefty fine. The latest development in the case was reported by K-media outlet The Korea Herald on June 5. IU's second-time offender slapped with 3 million KRW fine The Seoul Central District Court found the defendant, referred to as Kim, guilty of the crime of slander and ordered her to pay a fine of 3 million KRW (2,200 USD). The charges against Kim stemmed from her alleged posting of s*xually offensive comments about IU, and accusing that IU's agency, Edam Entertainment, bribed judges to rule in favour of them in the previous case. Kim however, claimed that she did not mention any names in the concerned comments, and argued that they were too vague to be linked to IU and did not damage her reputation. However, the court ruled against her, taking into account her similar previous offence three years ago. The court offered IU's defamor leniency The Seoul Court issued a lenient sentence for Kim due to her being already indicted with similar charges and facing legal consequences for the same. Kim received the same fine for her current offense as she did for her previous offense against IU in 2022. As for IU's side, they revealed that the When Life Gives You Tangerines actress did not forgive her offender and thus, the court hearing proceeded as scheduled. Kim's previous offence against IU Kim's previous online attack against IU was in April 2022, and it involved posting derogatory comments about her singing and fashion sense. Despite Kim's claim that her comments were merely a reflection of her personal taste and that her language skills were limited due to a mental health issue, the court found her guilty and imposed a fine of 3 million KRW in December 2023. From then till date, Edam Entertainment has been vigorously taking legal action against individuals who post malicious comments about IU. By November, the agency had initiated criminal proceedings against 180 individuals.

Woman who pestered IU online slapped with another fine, for another attack
Court awards 3 million won fine for malicious comment, after the writer had already been fined for the same offense last year A 40-year-old woman previously punished for contempt against IU has been sentenced to a fine for another malicious comment, once again against the K-pop superstar. Seoul Central District Court found the defendant surnamed Kim guilty of insult, a criminal offense in South Korea, sentencing her to 3 million won ($2,200) fine. The defendant was accused of posting sexually offensive comments against the 32-year-old singer and actor, along with the accusation that her agency Edam Entertainment had bribed the judges in recent litigations. Kim denied writing the comments, and claimed that they did not specify a target and it did not damage IU's reputation. The court rejected the defendant's claims, pointing out that Kim had already been punished for similar crimes and that she had not been forgiven by the victim. But the court issued a relatively lenient sentence in giving her the same punishment handed when she had no priors, as the offense had been committed before she was indicted for her previous offense. In the previous online attack against the victim, Kim wrote comments disparaging IU for her singing and attire in April 2022. Kim said the comments merely expressed her personal preference and that her linguistic skills are limited due to her mental condition, but the court sentenced her to 3 million won fine in December of last year. Edam Entertainment has been engaged in legal battles against those posting malicious comments against IU, with the agency saying in November that it has filed for criminal punishment against 180 individuals. IU, one of the most popular and influential figures in the Korean pop culture, has been subject to online attacks for years. She was recently targeted by supporters of disgraced ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol, expelled for his martial law imposition in December, when she paid for food and drinks to be provided for protesters calling for Yoon's impeachment earlier this year.

IU to return to the music world with signature cover album
Singer-actor to release third album of 'Flower Bookmark' series Singer-actor IU is making a comeback with her third cover album, "Flower Bookmark 3," set for release May 27. IU's agency Edam Entertainment confirmed that the album continues her signature "Flower Bookmark" cover series nearly eight years after its last installment. The "Flower Bookmark" albums, which launched in 2014 and continued with a second release in 2017, are known for IU's lyrical interpretations of classic Korean songs. With her delicate emotional delivery and refined vocal tone, she reimagines timeless tracks in a way that both honors the originals and infuses them with her own artistic identity. The upcoming release not only revives this nostalgic project but also marks her first return to music in about a year and three months, following the release of her sixth EP "The Winning" in February 2024. The cover image for the new album, which evokes the look of faded film photography, hints at a warm and sentimental atmosphere. Her previous "Flower Bookmark" albums included reinterpretations of songs such as 'Autumn Morning,' 'The Meaning of You' and 'Sleepless Rainy Night,' all of which earned praise for blending nostalgia with IU's signature sincerity and charm. It was recently revealed that actor and K-pop star Cha Eun-woo will make a special cameo in IU's new music video. IU remains one of South Korea's most celebrated solo artists, both as a musician and as an actor. Her world tour "Hereh," held from March to September last year, set a remarkable record as the most-attended world tour by a Korean female soloist, drawing 520,000 fans across Asia, Europe and North America. Most recently, she earned acclaim for her dual role in Netflix's hit series "When Life Gives You Tangerines."
