Forensic results awaited in case of man who allegedly set fire to waste removal tanker and two other vehicles
Forensic results are awaited in the case of a man charged with causing more than €100,000 worth of damage after he allegedly set fire to a Swissport Airline waste removal tanker and two other vehicles at Cork Airport Business Park in June. Mateusz Stula of Orchard Road in Blackpool in Cork city has appeared at Cork District Court charged with three counts of arson. Advertisement Sgt John Kelleher said that forensic analysis was ongoing in relation in the incidence of arson at the business park earlier this summer. A file is being prepared for the DPP. Defence solicitor Eddie Burke said that his client —who appeared today by video link — consented to a two or four week adjournment of the case. Judge John King further remanded Mr Stula to appear before Cork District Court via video link on September 3rd next. Advertisement Meanwhile, it is alleged that shortly after 1am on June 10th Mr Stula (32) entered the grounds of Cork Airport Business Park and set fire to three vehicles parked there. The Swissport Airline waste removal tanker was valued at €100,000. A second vehicle was privately owned and had been parked at the business park while the owner was out of the country. A third vehicle was a privately owned animal transporter truck which had been dropped to the business park for repairs. Det Sgt Pat Lyons previously objected to the granting of bail in the case citing the seriousness of the charges and the strength of the evidence against the accused. CCTV footage was checked in the aftermath of the incident. Mr Burke also previously told the court that his client was drinking alcohol whilst on prescribed medication and required inpatient treatment. He said that Mr Stuka had worked at a premises in the airport business park prior to the incident. Mr Burke said the matter before the court was not a case of Mr Stula going to the airport to carry out this damage. 'For whatever reason, he left his place of work and went to where these vehicles were.'

Cork teenager tried to burgle neighbour's house but fell asleep on bed, court heard
A 19-year-old who tried to burgle a neighbour's house to steal a television and PlayStation from a bedroom lay down on the bed during the crime and fell asleep. When he was disturbed by people arriving at the house, he fled and was later found hiding in the attic of his own home. These were the allegations made during an objection to bail being granted to Michael Harrington, of Ravensdale Road, Mahon, Cork. Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes objected to bail saying: 'It is alleged that on May 31, 2025, Michael Harrington entered a house at Ravensdale Road without permission of the home owner. 'He proceeded to ransack a bedroom in the house and place a PlayStation and PlayStation games and a television in a bag by the bedroom door. 'He then fell asleep on the bed and was found there by neighbours who are related to the owner. 'He admitted attempting to steal, before falling asleep in the bed. 'At the time of his arrest, he was found hiding in the attic of his home. 'He is addicted to prescribed tablets and has a substantial drug debt from cocaine and cannabis use. 'It is the Garda belief that if given bail, Michael (Mikey) Harrington will continue to commit serious offences to pay for his drug addiction.' Defence solicitor Eddie Burke called the teenager to give evidence. Judge Mary Dorgan reminded him he had received a lot of support from probation and related services. 'I am really sorry to see you here today,' Judge Dorgan said. 'I am too,"Michael Harrington replied. "Jail is not the place for me. My head is gone. My head is actually gone. I want to be well, I want to get clean. Life is tough, man, for me. It's hard. I want to be well.' Sergeant Aisling Murphy asked him: 'Have you not been given chance after chance? You keep breaking the bail conditions.' The teenager agreed with that. Eddie Burke, solicitor, said the young man really wanted to rehabilitate. Judge Dorgan said for now the safest place for him to be was in prison and to get help on his release. He was remanded in custody for a week.

Cork man to await CCTV footage before deciding plea for alleged assault of man in his 60s
CCTV footage of an alleged attack on a vulnerable 66-year-old man in Cork City in the middle of the day is to be sent to a Cork man's defence solicitor so that consideration can be given to the possibility of entering a signed plea of guilty to the charge of assault causing harm. Jonathan Mason of Farranferris Park, Farranree, Cork, is charged with carrying out the assault causing harm on a 66-year-old man at Great William O'Brien Street, Cork, at noon on Thursday, January 16. Sergeant John Kelleher said the Director of Public Prosecutions directed trial by indictment or the entry of a signed plea of guilty at the district court for sentencing at the circuit. Mr Mason, aged 40, appeared at Cork District Court by video link from prison on this assault charge. Eddie Burke, solicitor, applied for a copy of the prosecution statements and CCTV of the incident so that the possibility of a guilty plea could be considered. Detective Garda Brian Holland said previously: 'Jonathan Mason knows the injured party and knows the address where he resides – a vulnerable 66-year-old man. This was a senseless and violent act on a vulnerable, elderly man that was planned and carried out in the middle of the afternoon. "He stalked his victim and followed him and seriously assaulted him.' Solicitor Eddie Burke said at the first court appearance earlier this year that the defendant insisted that he had nothing to do with the crime. Denying that he had anything to do with the crime, Jonathan Mason said: 'I am not a violent person. I stays in my nanny's or in my partner's in Charleville. I am clean of drugs. I'm on Suboxone. "I pass that way (where the crime was committed) every day to collect my tablet next door to Watercourse Road garda station. My dad is the same age (as the injured party). I wouldn't like that to happen to my dad.' Judge Treasa Kelly remanded the accused in custody until May 7.
