Meath Local Sports Partnership opens new cricket wicket strip
The aim of the hub is to increase the number of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities participating in sport and physical activity within their community.
Meath Local Sports Partnership and Cricket Leinster have been working together for a few years to promote children playing cricket in Meath.
A 'School Crickets Programme' began in 2019, where over 2,251 pupils received student training and 43 primary school teachers received teacher training from Cricket Leinster.
Cricket Leinster allows competitors from 43 affiliated clubs, while also open to social players and those looking to get involved in the officiating side of the game, such as match refereeing and umpiring.
The new cricket strip was developed to further enhance Meath LSP's engagement with the wider local community in particular with those representatives from new communities.
The cricket wicket was funded by Meath Local Sports Partnership (LSP), under Sport Ireland's Dormant Account Fund for Community Sports Hubs capital measure. Key support was provided to the project by Meath County Council.
The new feature was launched during the week in the presence of the Navan town Mayor Cllr Eddie Fennessy, joined by other local councillors, LSP representatives, and representatives from Cricket Leinster and Royal Meath Cricketeers.
The Royal Cricketeers Meath are currently based out of Blackwater park, and the team will now use the strip for weekly activities and training.
Meath LSP has said it will continue working with Cricket Leinster to develop cricket programmes which will be available to the local community in the coming weeks.
