Louisville baseball sees dream season end vs Coastal Carolina. 3 takeaways from Omaha
OMAHA, NE. — Louisville baseball's incredible postseason run came to an end Wednesday afternoon when the Cardinals ran into a buzzsaw of a program in Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers' 26-game winning streak continued with an 11-3 win over the Cardinals in the College World Series semifinals at Charles Schwab Field. U of L (42-24) had worked its way through the elimination bracket to earn its first meeting with the Chanticleers since 2002, matching the program's best CWS appearance. Advertisement "I hate losing today. Don't get me wrong," Louisville coach Dan McDonnell said. "I wanted to coach them tomorrow. But it's hard for me not to be filled with joy for how this season went and how we got back into this place and made a good run at it." The Cardinals got off to a slow start and, despite their history of rallying, couldn't recover from the damage to close out their season. After ending the regular season with a 2-1 ACC series loss to Wake Forest, the Cardinals went 7-3 in the NCAA Tournament. "I know we surprised a lot of people, but we always knew we had it in us. We just brought it out at the right time," Eddie King Jr. said. "I think this team is just so resilient, just the things that we did all year, even guys fighting injuries like Alex (Alicea), (Garret) Pike. It just goes to show this group is really special. We have a lot of talent, and we proved it this year." Coastal Carolina moves on to play LSU in the national championship series, which begins Saturday. Advertisement Here are three takeaways from Louisville's season-ending loss to Coastal Carolina: Digging an early hole All signs pointed to the CWS semifinal game being a blowout when the Chanticleers scored six runs in the first inning. Louisville pitcher Colton Hartman allowed a leadoff hit to Caden Bodine before hitting the next two batters to load the bases with none out. A two-RBI single and walk reloaded the bases when Hartman got pulled for Trinity product Jake Schweitzer. Four more runs and two hits later, the Cardinals got the final out on a 6-3 play. Coastal Carolina batted around in the first inning, creating a 6-0 deficit for the Cardinals to try to overcome. Advertisement "They just get right out of the gate, and they just put that pressure on you," McDonnell said of the Chanticleers. Louisville held Coastal Carolina scoreless for three innings before the Chanticleers added four runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Louisville shows fight in sixth inning True to form, the Cardinals wouldn't go away quietly. Down 8-0, after giving up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Louisville strung together three one-out hits with Tague Davis' double scoring Jake Munroe for the team's first run. Pike and Kamau Neighbors each had RBI singles to trim the deficit to 8-3. But the two couldn't add to the Cardinals' scoring effort as Coastal Carolina recorded the final out to center field. Advertisement Struggles with strike zone After using six arms against Oregon State, Louisville threw seven pitchers against the Chanticleers. The group hit four batters, which is the most in a game during the Cardinals' CWS appearance, with five walks in the first six innings. The miscues were costly as back-to-back hit batters in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed the Chanticleers to go up, 10-3, with two out. Peter Michael entered the game in the seventh inning for the Cardinals and held Coastal Carolina to an earned run on one hit with a walk and three strikeouts. Ty Starke relieved him in the eighth and got the final out without giving up a run, leaving one Coastal Carolina runner stranded. Hartman, whose last appearance was against Wake Forest on May 17, absorbed the loss after allowing five earned runs on two hits with a walk and two hit batters without getting an out in the first inning. Louisville baseball tops Oregon State, reaches CWS semifinal. 3 takeaways from Omaha
OMAHA, NE. — Revenge was served hot on Tuesday afternoon. On an 80-degree overcast day with thunderstorms looming, Eddie King Jr.'s sacrifice fly scored Alex Alicea to give Louisville baseball its first win over Oregon State, 7-6, during the second-round elimination game at Charles Schwab Field. King finished with two hits, three RBI and countless chants of his name before and after his final at-bat. Advertisement "I struck out on a call I didn't like," Jake Munroe said. "I was upset about it, did a little 360, saw Eddie, and I said, 'Oh, yeah, we're good.' That's the special thing about this lineup." The Cardiac Cardinals (42-23) flipped the script on Oregon State after the Beavers' 4-3 walk-off win to open the College World Series on Friday. But they had momentum on their side and fended off Oregon State's ninth-inning rally, keeping their season alive. Scoring the game-winning run was a moment of redemption for Alicea, who had a crucial error in the top of the ninth inning. His failed fielding attempt allowed the Beavers to score two runs and tie the game before the Cardinals retired the next three batters. Alicea drew a leadoff walk and moved up on two Oregon State errors — catcher's interference and a mishandled bunt. After the game, Alicea was given the team's MVP shirt. Advertisement "I knew when Alex got on in the ninth, we win this game, the shirt's going to Alex," U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. "Nobody felt worse than he did, and believe me, as his coach, I have to admit I'm responsible for the way he attacks that ball. ... I feel awful as the coach. My star shortstop feels awful. I'm obviously not wanting to lose this game for a lot of reasons, but there's no way I want Alex to blame himself." Tucker Biven (5-0) earned the win for Louisville after holding Oregon State to one hit and fanning two in the final inning. Biven entered the game with a 2-0 pitch count, two on and none out. "Tucker Biven is the guy that walks up to (pitching coach Roger) Williams with his cleats on in the seventh and says, 'I'm pitching tonight, like, I'm ready. I'm going down there,'" McDonnell said. "It wasn't like we told Tucker to go down there. ... It's not easy to take the ball out of his hands. But how do you not love that in a pitcher?" U of L moves on to play Coastal Carolina in the CWS semifinals at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Advertisement Here are three takeaways from Louisville's win over Oregon State: Brennyn Cutts comes up big in second start Brennyn Cutts had only one other start at Louisville — a 14-10 loss against California — when his name was called in a must-win game against Oregon State. The Indiana State transfer started his outing by giving up a leadoff hit to Trent Caraway but then buckled down by striking out the next three batters. Cutts gave up a two-run homer to Jacob Krieg in the top of the fourth inning but finished with a season-high seven strikeouts. Cutts, Biven and the Cardinals' pitching staff combined to hold Oregon State to six runs (five earned) on nine hits with 13 strikeouts and six walks. They stranded 12 Beavers on base. Advertisement "We've pitched our tail off this postseason, so I'm really happy for this group," McDonnell said. Bringing out the big bats Louisville scored in three of the first four innings to build a 4-2 lead. King started it with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. After a 1-2-3 second inning, Munroe added a two-run bomb that went 394 feet with a 104 exit velocity. It was Munroe's fourth homer of the postseason and 13th this season. He'd previously hit three in the super regional series against Miami. King continued his postseason dominance with a ground-rule double but was left stranded on a flyout before his big moment six innings later. "I'm just grateful that I'm in the position that I'm in, and I just want to take advantage of every moment I get," he said. "Just hearing chants like that in a moment like that, it warms my heart. And I'm so glad that it could be for Louisville." Advertisement Zion Rose tallied his 13th homer of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth, going 368 feet, for a 4-2 lead. Louisville finished with 10 hits. Minimized damage Louisville's 4-2 lead was in jeopardy when Justin West walked the leadoff batter, gave up a hit and hit another batter to load the bases in the top of the sixth inning. The series of events led to a mound visit from Williams. West responded by striking out the next batter before the Cardinals got the next two outs. Louisville only allowed one run on a fielder's choice, stranding two Beavers to close out the top half of the inning with the 4-3 advantage. Advertisement West threw three innings and held Oregon State to one earned run on one hit with one walk. He fanned three. Up next: Louisville to play Coastal Carolina The Cardinals are two wins from the national championship series. They face Coastal Carolina in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Wednesday. A win over the Chanticleers, who haven't lost in the CWS bracket, would cause the teams to play again Thursday at a time yet to be determined. Louisville walks off Oregon St 7-6 on King's sacrifice fly in College World Series elimination game
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Eddie King Jr. drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave Louisville a 7-6 victory over Oregon State on Tuesday and knocked the Beavers out of the College World Series. The Cardinals (42-23) avenged a 4-3 walk-off loss to Oregon State last Friday and advanced to the Bracket 2 final. They must beat Coastal Carolina on Wednesday and again Thursday to reach the best-of-three CWS finals. Just like Oregon State (48-16-1) on Friday, Louisville squandered a late lead only to come back and win. Kellan Oakes faced the top of the Louisville lineup to start the bottom of the ninth. Alex Alicea walked and Lucas Moore was awarded first base for catcher's interference when his bat nicked Wilson Weber's mitt as he fouled off a pitch. The Cardinals loaded the bases when Matt Klein put down a bunt that Oakes booted, the Beavers' third error of the day and eighth in three CWS games. That brought on freshman Zach Edwards to face Jake Munroe, who got caught looking at strike three. Up came King, who sent a fly to center. Alicea tagged up from third, and Canon Reeder had no chance to make a throw home. King was mobbed behind first base, with teammates squirting their water bottles at him and chanting 'Edd-ie! Edd-ie!' Munroe and Zion Rose homered, and Louisville pitchers repeatedly worked out of trouble until they couldn't in the top of the ninth. Aiva Arquette homered to left-center on Wyatt Danilowicz's first pitch, and Gavin Turley, Weber and AJ Singer reached to load the bases with no outs. The Beavers tied it 6-all when Tyce Peterson's slow roller glanced off shortstop Alicea's glove and into the outfield grass, allowing two runs to score. Tucker Biven struck out Jacob Krieg, and Carson McEntire got Reeder to pop out. ___ AP college sports:

Louisville walks off Oregon State to stay alive in College World Series
OMAHA, Neb. — Louisville nearly gave away victory Tuesday at the College World Series, then the Cardinals snatched it back from Oregon State in a wild finish to an elimination game. A sacrifice fly by Eddie King Jr. with one out in the bottom of the ninth walked it off for Louisville, 7-6, advancing the Cards to face Coastal Carolina — unbeaten in two games at the CWS and riding a 25-game winning streak — on Wednesday at Charles Schwab Field. Advertisement The Beavers head home after a three-game stay in Omaha, but only after things got frantic in the ninth inning. Oregon State shortstop Aiva Arquette, projected by The Athletic's Keith Law as the No. 1 pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, opened the top of the ninth with a first-pitch home run to cut the Louisville lead to 6-4. CARDS WALK IT OFF #MCWS x 🎥 ESPN / @LouisvilleBSB — NCAA Baseball (@NCAABaseball) June 17, 2025 Oregon State loaded the bases, still with no outs, and evened the score as Tyce Peterson's ground ball slid under the glove of Louisville shortstop Alex Alicea into left field. The Beavers were on the verge of taking their first lead of the game but failed to get runners home from second and third base as Louisville reliever Tucker Biven notched two strikeouts and coaxed an infield pop-up. Alicea led off the ninth with a walk for Louisville. A catcher's interference call and Oregon State's misplay of a bunt loaded the bases before King lofted a fly ball to center field that allowed Alicea to tag up and score easily, securing victory.
