Superman star says his first comic book role in an X-Men movie was a "missed opportunity": "There was a lot they could have done with the character"

Superman star Edi Gathegi thinks his role in the new DC movie will "undo the wrongs" of the comic book character he played 14 years ago. He's set to play Mister Terrific in James Gunn's upcoming take on the Man of Steel, but over a decade ago he starred in 2011's X-Men: First Class. Gathegi played Darwin, a mutant capable of "reactive evolution," which enables him to evolve and adapt to any environment, but he didn't last very long in the franchise after Darwin met an untimely, not-comic-book-accurate end. "I think it is just a case of bad representation and missed opportunity. There was a lot that they could have done with that character, probably should have done with the character," Gathegi told Entertainment Weekly. "I was waiting to be brought back [after First Class] because, as you know, the character doesn't die," he continued. "The fact that he died in the first one isn't that big of a deal if he does what he does in the comics, which is come back. Every movie that came out and the character didn't come back, it solidified that it was a misrepresentation and a missed opportunity." However, Gathegi thinks that playing Mister Terrific in Superman "is kind of undoing the wrongs of Darwin. I know that as it stands right now, this isn't the only project that I'll be in." Only time will tell what those future projects may be, but Gunn recently said that he's working on a Superman follow-up movie – although it's not necessarily a "straight-up sequel." Gathegi stars alongside David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult in Superman, which is the first big-screen installment in Gunn's DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Superman arrives in theaters on July 11. In the meantime, check out our guide to the other upcoming superhero movies on the way in 2025 and beyond.

Edi Gathegi Thinks 'Superman' Role Saves Failed 'X-Men' Potential

There's a lot of superpowered characters in Superman, and one of the most notable is Michael Holt, aka Mr. Terrific. It isn't just that this is his first time on the big screen, it's also the matter of who's playing him: Edi Gathegi, who many likely remember as Darwin from X-Men: First Class, aka the mutant who died despite having the power to evolve and adapt to anything. Sooner or later, conversations about First Class remind you how dumb his death was, and Gathegi seems to agree. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, he noted the character's death 'is just a case of bad representation and missed opportunity.' The actor explained that he wasn't put off by dying given Darwin's power (and superheroes dying on a regular basis), and hoped to return in later movies. But with each passing sequel, those chances became less likely, hence him calling it 'misrepresentation and missed opportunity.' In Gathegi's eyes, getting to suit up again in Superman as Terrific is a way of 'undoing the wrongs of Darwin,' and a role he's excited to previously described the hero as 'an atheist who believes in justice,' which is informed by Holt losing his wife in a car crash. Following her death, Holt 'found meaning in knowledge and saw that while the universe might be cruel, intelligence, science, and innovation could make it better. He chose to become hope rather than succumbing to the despair of losing his wife.' After Superman releases on July 11, Mr. Terrific is expected to appear in future DC projects. Gathegi's not saying which, but we already can't wait to see him again.

The Justice Gang We'll Meet in ‘Superman' Is Coming Into Focus

Even casual fans know a lot about Superman already ahead of James Gunn's upcoming film named for the character. He's starred in plenty of films and TV shows, including some very recent releases. Lois Lane and Lex Luthor? We know them too. But what about Superman's support team that'll be introduced in the film as the Justice Gang? In a new profile, Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern Guy Gardner), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific) shared a bit about what to expect from their characters. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Fillion cuts to the chase: 'If you want to know something about Guy Gardner, know this: he has a bowl cut and he's into it.' As a member of the Green Lantern Corps, he has extraordinary powers, and he's been tasked to use them to protect Earth. However, as Fillion put it, 'If you have an emergency and you need a Green Lantern, this is the last one you want.' He also explained the character is fearless (or foolish) enough to think he can take on Superman, and as Gathegi futher explained, 'Guy Gardner's famously an asshole, so he's not really liked by anybody except for Guy Gardner, which is really fun.' Comic relief for a Fillion role makes sense. The other two Justice Gang members take things a little more seriously. As Merced explained it, Hawkgirl is a 'badass' who's in touch with her alien roots but is also 'a modern girl.' She won't get too much of a spotlight in Superman, but Gunn is bringing Hawkgirl to season two of Peacemaker alongside Fillion's Guy Gardner, which Merced called a 'more blatantly comical' context for her character. As for Mister Terrific, Gathegi described him as 'one of the most philosophically compelling heroes in DC. He's an atheist who believes in justice.' He's also notably 'unemotional,' the actor said. 'I did have my ideas of how to play the stoicism of this character, and then I found myself in these scenes going, 'This feels a little psychotic' … I think in the doing of it, we found a lot more color and more complexity and just more humanization.' Gathegi also noted that like Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl, his character is slated to return in DC projects beyond Superman—though he didn't specify where or when. Superman opens one month from today: July 11.
