New 'Edisi Siasat 2.0' Telegram channel blocked

KUALA LUMPUR: The Telegram channel 'Edisi Siasat 2.0', created after the "Edisi Siasat" and "Edisi Khas" channels were blocked on Thursday, is now also inaccessible to users. A Bernama check of the channel found a warning displayed, saying: "This channel can't be displayed because it violated local laws (Malaysia)". All content on the channel had also been deleted. On Thursday, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) filed a civil action against two Telegram channels, "Edisi Siasat" and "Edisi Khas", rendering them inaccessible on the same evening. However, a Bernama check of the platform at 8pm on the same day found that a new account using the name 'Edisi Siasat 2.0' had been created, gaining over 100,000 followers before it was blocked. MCMC said in a statement that the action is the first of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, especially since Telegram holds an Application Service (Class) [ASP(C)] licence. Both channels were found to be spreading content that violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which has the potential to erode trust in public institutions and affect public order. - BERNAMA

‘Edisi Siasat' clone channels appear on Telegram after original group blocked in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — The Telegram channel 'Edisi Siasat,' which featured information related to alleged misconduct by authorities, has been inaccessible to users of the platform since this afternoon. A Bernama check on the channel found a message displayed stating, 'Doesn't exist, this channel cannot be displayed as it goes against Malaysian law.' It was also observed that all content had been deleted, believed to be blocked by the authorities. However, at 8 pm tonight, Bernama's check on the platform found a new account using the name 'Edisi Siasat 2.0,' believed to have been created by the same administrator. As of now, this new account has more than 2,000 followers. Earlier, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) filed civil action against two channels on the Telegram platform, namely 'Edisi Siasat' and 'Edisi Khas.' MCMC stated today that this action is the first of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, especially since Telegram is an Application Service Provider (Class) [ASP(C)] license holder. 'This follows Telegram's alleged failure to address content that has been repeatedly reported to them, despite various negotiations and cooperation efforts made by MCMC,' the statement said. Both channels were identified as disseminating content that violates provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which has the potential to erode public trust in public institutions and disrupt social order. — Bernama

Malaysia Files Suit Against Telegram Channels Over Content

Malaysia's communications regulator has filed a civil suit against two Telegram channels over content that it deemed harmful. The channels, 'Edisi Siasat' and 'Edisi Khas,' were found to have spread content that violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and have the potential to erode trust in the country's institution and jeopardize peace in society, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said in a statement Thursday.

MCMC sues Telegram channels over content violations, gets court order to block posts

PUTRAJAYA, June 19 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has filed civil action against two channels on the Telegram platform, namely 'Edisi Siasat' and 'Edisi Khas'. Both channels were identified as spreading content that violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which has the potential to erode trust in public institutions and affect public order. MCMC in a statement today said the action was the first of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, especially since Telegram is an Application Service Provider (Class) [ASP(C)] licensee. 'This follows Telegram's serious failure to address the content that has been repeatedly reported to them, despite various efforts of negotiation and cooperation made by MCMC,' it said. Given the unsatisfactory level of compliance, MCMC said it had applied for and successfully obtained an interim injunction order from the High Court as a last resort to stop the dissemination of the harmful content and prevent the re-publication of such content. This action is taken to ensure that the rule of law is upheld and public interests continue to be protected. According to MCMC, Telegram will be given due space to present its defence in line with the principles of justice and fundamental rights. 'MCMC as a regulatory body would like to remind that all social media platform providers are responsible for the content published in their respective digital spaces,' the commission said. — Bernama
