Transport driver charged in northern Ont.; truck had serious tire and mechanical defects
A 26-year-old commercial motor vehicle driver from Edmonton has been charged under the Criminal Code after police stopped his vehicle on Highway 11 because of 'obvious' tire defects.
A 26-year-old commercial motor vehicle driver from Edmonton has been charged under the Criminal Code after police stopped his vehicle on Highway 11 because of 'obvious' tire defects.
The company that employs the driver, based in Calgary, has also been charged.
The incident took place around 8:45 p.m. June 14 in Temagami, Ont., police said in a news release Wednesday. Not only was the vehicle unsafe, police said the driver didn't have insurance, among other offences.
'Ontario Provincial Police observed a commercial motor vehicle with obvious tire defects travelling along Highway 11,' police said in the release.
Serious mechanical defects
'Upon initiating a traffic stop, the officer conducted a thorough inspection and identified multiple serious mechanical and administrative defects with the vehicle.'
The vehicle was towed and impounded and the 'driver was arrested for dangerous operation of a conveyance and charged with Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act offences.'
The driver is charged with several offences, including dangerous driving, operating an unsafe combination of vehicles, having an insecure load, driving without insurance, driving without having the proper vehicle inspection, driving a trailer without a plate and three counts of failing to display inspection sticker or proof.
The company from Calgary was charged with another seven offences, including allowing a vehicle to be driven without insurance, failing to ensure the daily inspection was conducted properly, insecure load and improper tires on a CMV.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury, on Sept. 23.
The company is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court in Temiskaming at a later date.
