A former longtime member of Parliament is running to be Edmonton's next mayor. Rahim Jaffer, who at age 25 in 1997 became the first Muslim elected to the House of Commons, is expected to announce he is running for mayor in this fall's municipal election. Knack announces candidacy for Edmonton mayor
Andrew Knack will run to be Edmonton's next mayor. The Ward Nakota Isga councillor has served west Edmontonians for three terms. 'We've accomplished a lot. But we continue to face significant challenges. Many of us are worried about higher costs, and some don't feel as safe as they used to; others don't know when they will get access to some of the basic amenities that others in Edmonton have. We also face a time where people don't always feel heard in a world that feels more divisive and chaotic than before,' he said in a Thursday statement. 'I've knocked on countless doors, listened at community meetings, and have a proven track record of getting things done. Edmonton is a hard-working city, and it deserves a hard-working Mayor so we can continue to build up as we grow exponentially.' His campaign will launch in June. Knack is not the first councillor to announce his candidacy. Current Ward pihêsiwin councillor Tim Cartmell promised in November he would run, as did former councillor Tony Caterina. Only two candidates have already submitted the paperwork to be official nominees: Omar Mohammad, a pediatric dental surgeon, and Abdul Malik Chukwudi, a trained engineer who worked in the oil and gas sector. Edmonton's current mayor, Amarjeet Sohi, won't be seeking re-election after losing as the federal Liberal party's candidate in the Edmonton Southeast riding.
