Texas Game Wardens urge safety ahead of Safe Boating Week
May 14—AUSTIN — Texas Game Wardens and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) urge boaters to make safety their top priority as they kick off National Safe Boating Week, May 17 — 23. With about 1.7 million surface acres of freshwater inland lakes, 4 million surface acres of saltwater and 191,000 miles of rivers and streams statewide, Texas offers opportunities for boating, fishing and water recreation. In 2024, Texas reported 169 boating incidents, with 24 water fatalities — 22 of those victims were not wearing life jackets. In addition, 78 boating incidents resulted in injuries affecting 100 people, a news release said. "These incidents aren't just statistics, they represent real people and real families forever changed by moments that could have been prevented," Cody Jones, TPWD assistant commander for marine enforcement, said in the release. "Taking simple precautions, like wearing a life jacket, can be the key to making it home safely. It's a small step that can have a life-saving impact." Texas is home to nearly 560,000 registered recreational boats, along with an estimated 359,000 unregistered vessels such as kayaks, paddleboards and small sailboats under 14 feet. With summer approaching, waterways will be crowded and safety should be a priority for everyone. Safety tips to keep in mind: — Always wear a life jacket; it's the law for kids under 13. — Use your boat's ignition safety switch; it's the law. — Never boat under the influence of alcohol. — Don't overload your vessel. — Maintain a safe speed and keep a proper lookout. — Be cautious in low water or near submerged objects. — Take a certified boater education course. — Leave a float plan with someone you trust. — Exercise special caution on personal watercraft. — Avoid saltwater if you have open wounds as vibrio bacteria occur naturally in Texas coastal waters. "National Safe Boating Week is more than a campaign — it's a reminder that fun on the water starts with responsibility," said Jones. "Whether you're paddling a kayak or operating a larger vessel, your actions affect everyone around you." As Texans head to the water this holiday weekend, Texas Game Wardens will be there not just to patrol, but to partner with the public in promoting safe and enjoyable experiences for all. Together, by making smart choices and looking out for one another, we can help ensure that every outing ends with everyone returning home safely. For more information or to enroll in a boater safety course, visit the TPWD Boater Education Program.

DeWine calls for ban on cell phones in schools
Apr. 17—COLUMBUS — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine hosted a press conference this month supporting legislation that would ban the use of cell phones in public schools in Ohio. Sponsored by Sen. Jane Timken. R-Jackson Township, Senate Bill 158 incorporates language first introduced by DeWine in his executive budget — prohibiting student use of cell phones during the school day. "It's clear that we need to get cell phones out of our classrooms," said DeWine. "The constant distraction of cell phones makes it nearly impossible for students to focus and learn. Not only do they negatively impact student performance, but they can also be harmful to kids' mental and emotional health." "In schools that have already banned phones, we've heard from teachers, administrators, and parents who say the results have been remarkable. Student engagement has improved. Grades are better. Socialization is improving," DeWine said. "It's rare that one change can have such a positive difference. That's why it's time to make Ohio schools phone free." SB 158 will expedite the implementation process — allowing schools time over the summer to update their policies to prohibit student use of cell phones in time for the start of the 2025-2026 school year this fall. The bill includes exceptions for students using a cell phone for a documented purpose as part of an Individualized Education Program or for monitoring a health concern. "When phones are within reach, our children are constantly wondering, 'What am I missing? What notification did I miss?' This does not provide for a conducive learning environment, and also has damaging social effects," Timken said. "This legislation is a common sense approach to unplug our children from the constant distractions that they have in the classroom. It will reduce those distractions and will facilitate the building of the interpersonal relationships that are so vital to human development."

Trump administration to audit California sex education curriculum for 'medical accuracy'
The Trump administration is reviewing the curriculum of a sex education program in California for medical accuracy and age appropriateness, a move that has sparked backlash from LGBTQ+ advocates worried about queer and transgender sexual health information being censored. Last week, California was asked to submit all educational materials from its federally funded Personal Responsibility Education Program to the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to a news release from the administration. HHS provides $75 million in annual funding to PREP programs across the nation. The stated goal of these programs is to prevent adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. "As part of our radical transparency efforts, I will ensure the curriculum students are taught is age-appropriate and medically accurate," said Andrew Gradison, ACF acting assistant secretary, in a statement on the curriculum review. Read more: Trump's rebuke to 'gender ideology' changes federal policy and sets up clash with California Jorge Reyes Salinas, spokesperson for LGBTQ+ civil rights organization Equality California, called Gradison's statement misleading. "This is not about curriculum transparency, it's about censorship, plain and simple," Salinas told The Times. "This investigation of California's PREP program appears to be politically motivated and attempts to undermine the inclusive, medically accurate sex education services that serve our most vulnerable youth." California's PREP program provides sexual health education to youths ages 10 to 19 with a focus on reaching those who are low-income, experiencing homelessness, in foster care, in the juvenile justice system or identify as LGBTQ+, according to the California Department of Public Health. The department says California's PREP curriculum has been shown to influence youth to delay sexual activity, increase condom or contraceptive use for those who are sexually active, and to reduce the number of sexual partners. Salinas said he believes the administration's probe into the curriculum is a thinly veiled attempt to erase mentions of the transgender community, transgender health care and different gender identities and pronouns. "This is all part of their calculated political attack against transgender and nonbinary people," he said. In January, Trump issued an executive order saying that the government would only recognize two genders, male and female, effectively erasing federal recognition of transgender people. His administration has weakened nondiscrimination protections under the Affordable Care Act, giving health care providers and insurers more leeway to deny services to transgender individuals. Trump has also challenged a new California law that prevents school districts from notifying parents if their child asks to use a different name or pronoun in the classroom. Read more: Trump targets California ban on 'forced outing' of students' gender identity to parents Attention was drawn to California's PREP program last week, when the Daily Mail published an article stating that its curriculum discussed role-plays "which present same-gender couples and discuss the use of sexual aids." This article was circulated by Trump Deputy Assistant Alex Pfeiffer, who said in a post on X that California is "using taxpayer money to teach kids about sex toys and role playing." The California Department of Public Health did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the accuracy of this claim. Salinas called the comment "ridiculous," saying that the point of California's PREP program is to provide valuable lessons on abstinence, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and healthy relationships and decision-making.
