Statewide campaign for farmer registration to begin Sep 16

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh govt will launch a statewide campaign on Sep 16 to achieve 100% farmer registration before the release of the next instalment under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-Kisan). A govt spokesperson said district magistrates will review progress daily in the run-up to the drive. The revenue department was directed to issue standard operating procedures (SOPs) to officials to ensure the correction of land ownership records in line with Aadhaar. The state govt set a target of over 2.88 crore farmer registrations. So far, around 1.45 crore farmers—more than 50% of the target—were registered. Bijnor leads with over 58% registrations, followed by Hardoi (57.84%), Shravasti (57.47%), Pilibhit (56.89%) and Rampur (56.72%), placing them among the top five districts in farmer registry. Credentials of farmers, who are not yet part of the registration process, are being verified by the field officers. In districts like Amroha, Azamgarh, Balrampur, Etah and Jaunpur, 100% verification was already completed. The DMs were also asked to carry out extensive IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities, while ground officials will focus on lagging districts to achieve full coverage, the spokesperson said. Video: Stray dogs in Shimla to be tagged with QR and GPS — here's why

In a significant move to tackle the dog menace, the Shimla Municipal Corporation has launched a campaign in which all stray dogs will be equipped with QR and GPS-based collars to monitor the behaviour of the canines. This comes weeks after the Supreme Court's directive for the blanket removal of stray dogs from Delhi NCR — which has drawn massive backlash from politicians, activists, and citizens. These tags, tied around the dogs' necks, will contain imperative information such as sterilisation status, vaccination records, overall health, age, and behaviour. Residents can access all this information about the dogs simply by scanning the details, according to a report by The Tribune. The tagging process will be carried out in tandem with NGOs and volunteers. The corporation will also launch an awareness programme to educate residents of the hill town on how to deal with aggressive stray dogs. Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials will be widely distributed among schoolchildren, local residents, and ward councillors to promote awareness and ensure community safety, the report added. The issue of stray dog attacks remains a paramount concern in the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, with over 800 dog-bite cases registered, The Tribune reported. Meanwhile, the apex court reserved its order in the stray dogs case on Thursday. The hearing comes in the wake of widespread protests against the top court's order for the blanket removal of stray dogs from all NCR localities. The hearing witnessed a heated exchange, with senior advocate Kapil Sibal urging a stay on the August 11 order. He cautioned that relocating all stray dogs to shelters could result in cruelty, culling, and health hazards. On the other hand, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta pointed out that India records over 37 lakh dog-bite cases every year, stressing that the Supreme Court's directive stemmed from serious public safety concerns. The matter was taken up after getting listed a few hours after it was mentioned before Chief Justice BR Gavai in open court. 'I will look into it,' the CJI said.

IEC campaign on HIV/AIDS awareness launched

Ongole: The Prakasam District Medical and Health Department launched an intensive Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign on HIV/AIDS awareness and drug prevention, coinciding with National Youth Day as part of the District Integrated Strategy for HIV/AIDS (DISHA). District Medical and Health Officer Dr T Venkateswarlu, along with District Leprosy AIDS & TB Control Officer Dr B Srivani, released awareness posters and flagged off a rally as part of the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society's directive. The DMHO said that the two-month campaign will follow a weekly thematic approach covering eight themes across 200 villages, 400 schools, 86 colleges, and door-to-door visits to 700 households throughout the district. Dr Srivani emphasised that the medical and health department, in collaboration with NGOs, will conduct extensive field-level awareness programmes focusing on drug abuse prevention and HIV prevention/control among youth. Cluster Programme Manager Kiran Panditi highlighted that the campaign aims to encourage voluntary HIV screening at government hospitals and educate people about rights under the HIV/AIDS Act 2017, promoting non-discriminatory attitudes toward people living with HIV. Several AIDS Prevention and Control Unit officers, programme managers, and programme officers from target intervention NGOs, nursing school staff, and students participated.

Over 4,300 thalassemia patients registered in portal; Majority under age 12: Govt in RS

New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) As many as 4,361 thalassemia patients have been registered on the National Sickle Cell Portal, with children below the age of 12 accounting for a significant share ie 2,579 cases, data shared by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today in the Rajya Sabha revealed. Responding to a written question in this regard, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel stated that a dedicated thalassemia module was integrated into the Sickle Cell Portal in 2023. The module enables States and Union Territories to systematically upload patient records, thereby facilitating regular monitoring, follow-ups, and data-driven surveillance on a national scale. The Minister noted that while the overall responsibility for thalassemia-related management and public awareness lies with respective State and UT governments, the Centre continues to extend support under the National Health Mission (NHM). This includes both financial and logistical assistance aimed at strengthening public health infrastructure. 'Support is provided for a range of services, including screening and treatment, provision of medicines, blood bank facilities, day care centres, laboratory services, training of healthcare personnel, and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities,' Patel said. These measures are incorporated into the Programme Implementation Plans submitted annually by States and UTs, she added. Highlighting ongoing efforts to improve access to advanced treatment, the Minister also referred to the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY), an initiative supported by Coal India Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mandate. The scheme provides financial assistance of up to Rs10 lakh for bone marrow transplants (BMT) in eligible patients, and is currently operational across 17 empanelled hospitals nationwide. UNI AJ SSP
