EXCLUSIVE Did Meghan go toe-to-toe with Anna Wintour? Source claims Vogue editor 'banned' Duchess from cover after becoming 'frustrated' with her 'micromanaging'
Meghan Markle was 'banned' by Anna Wintour from being on the cover of British Vogue in September 2022 after the magazine boss became 'frustrated with all the Duchess of Sussex 's team's micromanaging', according to a source. This apparently resulted in Prince Harry 's wife and the former editor of British Vogue, Edward Enninful, 'drifting apart' amid rumours in fashion circles of a falling out between the two over the planned Vogue feature on the Duchess's charitable work. The magazine coverage was designed to tie in with Meghan's keynote appearance at the One Young World Summit in Manchester in September 2022. But Conde Nast insiders claim it was abruptly pulled and scrapped completely. An insider told FEMAIL that Meghan was being 'difficult about making it a cover' and her team were 'insisting on particular straplines'. They added: 'Anna heard about it, and just like banned her and said, "That's it. We don't want to do this". 'And so she didn't get the cover, and I guess she didn't even get the story. [Edward] probably agreed with Anna that you don't get to call the shots on who's on the cover. That's absolutely an editor's decision. 'Anna was p***** off. Anna was like frustrated with all the micromanaging, and just was like, "All right. That's it. She can't have the cover and we're not doing the story".' The source added that Meghan's 'level of desire for detail and control on the media is almost like Beyoncé level... but she's not Beyoncé.' However, the Duchess is said to have been relaxed with 'no expectations' but her team had 'high expectations for the piece' in Vogue. 'Enninful was not in a position to meet those expectations. He already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month,' said Conde Nast insiders to the Mail On Sunday. British Vogue's September 2022 cover star was Canadian fashion model Linda Evangelista. According to insiders, the project about Meghan's work needed a full production team including photographers, videographers, stylists and editors to shoot exclusive images and film an in-depth video feature with the Sussexes. Shelving the project is said to have damaged Enninful and the Duchess' friendship. 'Edward was furious to have lost the project, as were the powers that be at Conde Nast,' a source told the MoS. Sources claim that Meghan's team had hoped the couple could feature on a special digital cover Vogue, which is released alongside the print edition. But again, it is understood that Enninful declined. 'He didn't think it was appropriate to give her the cover,' the source explained. Tight timings meant the whole project was eventually shelved and relations between the pair moved to only irregular contact. However, a source close to the Duchess says they have been in touch again recently. In August, Edward's team sent flowers to the Duchess to mark her 43rd birthday. Insiders admit that there has been a 'drifting' of their friendship with one source close to the Duchess saying, 'time and geography mean that Edward and Meghan just don't get to see each other as much as they did when both were living in London.' The source continued, 'friendships drift over time, but the pair have exchanged cards and flowers for one another's birthday and text each other from time to time to offer support for one another's ventures.' Their friendship first grew from Enninful's invitation to the Duchess to guest-edit the fashion bible six years ago. Meghan said at the time that they were 'like-minded thinkers' who enjoyed 'philosophising' over steaming cups of mint tea. Sources add that during the years that followed Enninful has increased his public involvement with the Royal Family, and a source close to Meghan claims that 'obviously this is a tightrope that Edward has to walk. He wouldn't want to take sides'. Enninful was initially supportive of her now-infamous 'Megxit' Oprah interview in 2021. Enninful, who was awarded an OBE in 2016 for his services to diversity in the fashion industry, is a trustee for The King's Fund, King Charles's charity, and interviewed the monarch for Vogue when he was still Prince of Wales in 2020. He attended his coronation in 2023, despite his open support of the Sussexes. Enninful follows all three of the King's charitable organisations on Instagram – but tellingly, does not follow Meghan or any of her enterprises. A source close to the Duchess said: 'She doesn't read anything into that because he doesn't follow his sister either.' In 2019, Meghan and Enninful collaborated on an issue of British Vogue which became the fastest-selling in the magazine's 104-year history, selling out in ten days. The 'Forces for Change' issue put inspirational women – including former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern and actresses Gemma Chan and Jane Fonda – on the cover. The following year Enninful addressed criticism Meghan had received when she joined the Royal Family. He defended the Duchess, calling her a 'brave woman' and describing the treatment of her as 'very unfair' and 'harsh'. But he said he 'wouldn't just blame it on racism', adding: 'I think sometimes it takes a minute to understand the rules.' Whether he would defend her again today is another matter. Sources close to Meghan deny that she ever sought a Vogue cover and say she had been invited to appear. The Duchess of Sussex's representatives were approached for comment by the MailOnline. MailOnline also approached Conde Nast for comment.

Meghan's ‘impossible' Vogue cover shoot demands revealed
The alleged rift between Megan Markle and former British Vogue editor Edward Enninful goes deeper than him reportedly being unable to accommodate her for a cover in 2022, we hear. The former royal gave the fashion maven an impossible list of demands, and even tried to also appeal to US Vogue 's Anna Wintour, a source tells Page Six. The Daily Mail reported this week that Markle and Enninful had plans for a UK Vogue September 2022 issue that would include Markle's keynote appearance at the One Young World Summit in Manchester, and 'involved extensive features across the magazine and its digital editions.' The outlet reported that Markle wanted the cover, but Enninful already had a star, Linda Evangelista, booked — causing Markle to pull the plug and causing a falling out between the former friends. But we hear scheduling wasn't the only reason the cover never materialised. A source tells us Markle wanted a 'global cover,' appearing on the covers of UK and US Vogue simultaneously, along with a list of demands. 'Meghan asked for control over [the] photographer, writer, final edit, photos, cover lines, and wanted a global issue,' says a source. We hear there was no way any editor would agree. 'Nobody gets that. Not even Beyoncé,' says the source. We hear Markle even set up a personal Zoom call with Wintour in order to try and pitch her on the idea. 'Anna wasn't interested,' says the source, adding the mag already had its own cover star, Serena Williams. While Markle was not in the running, the source tells us: 'Meghan asked for a Zoom with her to reconsider, and Anna did it to be polite.' Adele is the only celebrity to appear on both US and UK covers simultaneously for the November 2021 issues. However, another source insisted that Markle never sought a cover from Vogue, and that the mag had actually approached her multiple times after her wedding to Prince Harry. Enninful had previously asked Markle to be on the cover of British Vogue's 2019 'Forces for Change' issue, but she chose to guest edit instead, the source said. Markle did wind up getting a September 2022 cover, at the time she was promoting her now failed 'Archetypes' podcast. She appeared on the digital cover of New York magazine's the Cut, which also featured another digital cover with Megan Thee Stallion. She was also slated to appear on the cover of Variety that month, but it was held a month after Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Sources told Daily Mail that Markle and Enninful — who quit British Vogue in February — are no longer on speaking terms. 'The duchess and her team had high expectations and were expecting she might get a print cover or at least a digital cover out of it, but Enninful was not able to meet those expectations. He already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month,' an insider said. 'Edward was furious to have lost the project, as were the powers that be at Condé Nast,' said the source. 'The whole process became very difficult. Edward could only promise her a big showy feature inside the magazine and online — but she turned it down,' they added. Despite the claims, Page Six has also heard that the relationship between Markle and Enninful has 'remained warm and respectful' over the years, with the pair exchanging birthday wishes and flowers.

Is there a new member of the 'Sussex Survivors' Club'? The Mail's Royal experts discuss Meghan Markle's friendship with Edward Enninful on PALACE CONFIDENTIAL
Meghan Markle first came across Edward Enninful, the former editor of British Vogue, when she was invited to guest-edit the fashion magazine in 2019. At the time, they were inseparable with Meghan describing them as 'like-minded thinkers' who enjoyed 'philosophising' over cups of mint tea. But there have long been rumours amid fashion circles that the pair fell out over a planned feature in British Vogue about the Duke and Duchess's charitable work in 2022. Now, the Mail's team of unrivalled royal experts have delved into the truth behind Meghan and Edward's friendship on the latest episode of Palace Confidential, questioning whether the style stalwart has become an 'honorary member' of the 'Sussex Survivors' Club'. 'One of Meghan's friends was the editor of British Vogue,' Richard Eden, the Daily Mail's Diary Editor, said. 'Or he certainly used to be.' Richard, who has written about the Royal Family for over 20 years, urged viewers of Palace Confidential to remember the 'cringemaking' video that Meghan made in 2019 to promote the record-breaking issue she guest-edited for Vogue entitled Forces for Change. The cover featured familiar faces such as Salma Hayek Pinault, Greta Thunberg and Laverne Cox. It was described as the 'fastest-selling' issue in the magazine's history by Forbes. 'The video was them wearing party hats,' he said, 'and they talked about their shared love of mint tea. Anyway, they were besties for a while these two. 'Then it clearly went badly wrong and they did that classic modern thing of unfollowing each other on social media but it was known that they were really not on speaking terms anymore.' Pointing to a 'very interesting' article in the Mail on Sunday written by his colleague Charlotte Griffiths, Richard said it reveals 'what actually went wrong'. 'Meghan was hoping that Enninful would run in Vogue a big number on the [Sussexes'] charitable work,' he explained. 'This is going back to 2022 and she was hoping there would be a special that was to coincide with Meghan's appearance at the One Young World Summit. 'I think she hoped for a cover of Vogue as well as a big spread online as well as the magazine. But it didn't happen.' Although the Duchess is said to have been relaxed with 'no expectations', her team supposedly had 'high expectations for the piece'. A source told the MoS they were 'expecting she might get a print cover or at least a digital cover out of it, but Enninful was not able to meet those expectations. 'He already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month.' Adding his own commentary on Palace Confidential, Richard said: 'I think the problem was he had already designated a cover to the great former supermodel Linda Evangelista. Forces for Change - Vogue's September issue that was guest-edited by the Duchess of Sussex in 2019 'It was a really striking cover and presumably they had been negotiating for ages.' Indeed, British Vogue's September 2022 cover star was the Canadian fashion model. In the issue, Linda opened up about her struggle to 'love herself' again after a botched cosmetic procedure left her 'permanently deformed' and 'brutally disfigured.' According to insiders, Meghan's project needed a full production team including photographers, videographers, stylists and editors to shoot exclusive images and film an in-depth video feature with the royal couple. Shelving it is said to have caused irreparable damage to Meghan and Edward's friendship. 'Edward was furious to have lost the project, as were the powers that be at Conde Nast,' a source told the MoS. The newspaper approached the Duchess of Sussex and Enninful for comment. Conde Nast declined to comment. Richard added: 'Meghan was so disappointed that it sounds like she threw her toys out of the pram and never spoke to Edward again.' He then passed the floor to Jo Elvin who not only hosts the hit YouTube show Palace Confidential but previously edited the glossy fashion magazines You and Glamour. Sharing her insight, Jo said: 'I haven't ever had the weird privilege of turning away royalty on my magazine cover - that is a whole rarified Vogue world that I know not of. 'But I have definitely been in the situation so many times where you've got three celebrities who want that cover and they can only have that one cause it's the only that's promoting the thing at the time that they want it to be at - and you've already given it to somebody. 'People don't pay celebrities to be on magazine covers, I think that might surprise a lot of people. 'Once you've said, "you can have the cover, Beyonce" to suddenly dump Beyonce because Meghan wants the cover. You just can't do it.' 'So Edward Enninful would have had no choice?' asked Rebecca English, the Daily Mail's Royal Editor. 'He would have been between a rock and a hard place,' Jo replied. 'If it's true that she then decided that she didn't even want to be in the pages of Vogue, I think I can sympathise with him being pretty annoyed at having probably at least a 10-page hole. 'Most celebrities understand that once that offer has been somewhere else, you're not going to get it.' 'If this is true,' Richard interjected, 'it does seem very self-defeating because if they did wanted publicity for their charitable works, surely you would welcome any publicity?' To which Jo said: 'I think the three of us know that if Meghan had been in Vogue with somebody else on Vogue, there would have been reams of speculation worldwide about why she wasn't "good enough" for the cover.' Turning back to her role as host, Jo turned to Rebecca and said: 'On another note, the Sussexes do fall out with a lot of people, don't they?' 'I wonder if Edward Enninful has been given honorary membership of the Sussex Survivors Club?' Rebecca said. 'Oh, he may well have a t-shirt,' Jo joked. 'He could design the t-shirt.'

Upstaged by a supermodel: how Meghan fell out with Vogue
I did have a tiny chuckle when I read the story of why Edward Enninful, former editor of Vogue, is no longer on speaking terms with Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. No doubt your mind is on higher things than mine, so I'll bring you up to speed. One of the biggest mysteries among the fashion chatterati in recent times has been why did Edward and Meghan, once famously firm texting buddies, fall out? Last weekend The Mail on Sunday reported it was all down to a spat over Vogue's front cover. Meghan was due to feature across several pages in Vogue's September 2022 issue, talking about her charitable work. The coverage was apparently set to coincide with her keynote appearance at the One Young

Meghan Markle ALWAYS rejects her friends when things don't go her way – just like she dumped the Royals, says expert
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MEGHAN Markle always rejects her friends when things don't go her way, a royal expert has claimed. In the very same way, Meghan also "dumped" the royal family when things failed to work out for her in Britain, the expert added. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, and the former magazine editor were once thick as thieves who bonded over mint tea and "philosophising". The ex-Suits actress said the duo were "like-minded thinkers" after she helped edit an edition in 2019. But insiders told the Mail on Sunday that the pair cut contact over Enninful's plans to cover Meghan and Harry's charity work in a feature. Royal expert Hugo Vickers told The Sun: "None of this surprises me at all, because we see it the whole time when things don't go her way. She just overreacts. "Clearly in this case with Edward Enninful, she has made something of an enemy, because he then dropped her from something she would have liked to be a part of, and it seems to happen the whole time. "She's very demanding. She's difficult to work with. She has her ideas of what she wants to do, and she doesn't seem to want to listen to anybody else, and that's when you get into a trouble." Mr Vickers also highlighted how many people are now removed from Meghan's life, from ex-husbands to close pals. She is estranged from her father Thomas Markle over drama surrounding her wedding with Prince Harry in 2018. Her shocking claims surrounding the Royal Family since quitting the UK in 2020, from her Oprah interview to Netflix documentary, have also seen her alienated from her in-laws. Meghan's got it all WRONG - She's shown us the real her but we HATE it And countless staff members have joined a long list of people who no longer wish to associate with the mum-of-two. "There is a theme which runs through all this is that she's always rejecting people, or indeed, falls out with," said Mr Vickers. "Her father for one, who was very good to her when she was growing up, her first husband just gets dumped, her Canadian chef lover in Canada, dumped as well. "Jessica Mulroney, her great friend in Canada, dumped, the entire British Royal family, and apart from her mother, all her own family." He dubbed the reported fall out with Enninful a "normal theme" and added "everything she does seems to go wrong". Mr Vickers continued: "She should listen to somebody like Edward Enninful, he's a very highly qualified editor, and he knows what he's doing, running a very important magazine. 7 Prince Harry has been feuding with his family since quitting the UK with Meg in 2020 Credit: Getty 7 Thomas Markle is now estranged from his daughter Credit: Channel 5 / Thomas Markle: My Story 7 Trevor Engelson was Meghan Markle's first husband Credit: Getty - Contributor "I would have thought it would have been well in her interest to keep in with him, instead of upsetting him. "She doesn't know better. Unfortunately, as has been proved time and time again." He added: "She is just so incredibly difficult, and that is the theme, and that is the narrative now, and I suspect that that will go on and probably get worse." Mr Vickers suggested part of the trouble stems from the fact everything "is always focused on her". He spotlighted the Duchess' Mother's Day post in which she praised herself and failed to mention her own mum. "I really feel sorry for those children, and I wonder what sort of what they're going to think when they grow up and realise how they're being used in these things as well," he added. This comes after Meghan reportedly cut her plans to work with Enninful on a feature in 2022. The former editor allegedly wanted to showcase the Duchess' keynote speech at the One Young World Summit in Manchester in 2022. However, he didn't want to give them a front cover. Conde Nast insiders claimed Meghan axed their arrangement. A Conde Nast insider claimed: "The duchess and her team had high expectations and were expecting she might get a print cover or at least a digital cover out of it, but Enninful was not able to meet those expectations. "He already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month." "The whole process became very difficult. Edward could only promise her a big showy feature inside the magazine and online – but she turned it down." After being told they wouldn't make the cover, sources claim Meghan asked to be on the special digital cover which would be available with the print edition. Her request was refused, by Enninful, because he didn't think it would be "appropriate". The Duchess was so offended she walked away from the offer completely, leaving the former editor "furious". It is understood this was his breaking point and their friendship was fractured beyond repair. Insiders also claim it hasn't gone unnoticed in the Sussex household how much more involvement Enninful has with the Royal Family. Enninful is now a trustee for The King's Fund, King Charles's charity. And, he hosted a glitzy New York event for The King's Trust earlier this month - and Meghan was definitely not on the list sources claim. This comes after fans claimed Meghan was "snubbed by Vogue" after she didn't appear on Enninful's final cover. The Duchess was noticeably absent from the impressive shoot, featuring 40 "of the most booked and blessed women on earth". Meghan's friends including Ophra, Serena Williams, and Jameela Jamil all appeared in the glamorous picture marking the March 2024 edition. Meg became close with Enninful while guest editing the September 2019 issue. She left herself off the cover over fears she'd look 'boastful' and chose to instead focus on 15 women who 'break barriers'. Enninful also previously stood by Harry and Meghan amid their bombshell Oprah interview in 2021. The former Vogue editor was one of 15 Conde Nast employees who watched the sensational conversation air live in the United States via a video link from their homes in the UK. Enniful was in "constant contact" with Meghan using WhatsApp as he watched the duchess's chat with Oprah, the Daily Mail reported. A source close told the paper: "There were around 15 people on the Zoom, all top Conde Nast people. "They felt it was important from an editorial perspective that they got together to watch it." However, royal biographer Tom Bower previously claimed in his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War between the Windsors, that Meghan and Enninful feuded during the creation of Vogue's September 2019 issue. Staff were described as being left in "silent exasperation" at Meghan and her demands. It claimed the duchess proposed poor ideas, and accused her of being difficult to approach with opposing suggestions. Bower also wrote that Enninful and Meghan had a difference of opinion on how to market the edition - as the former actress wished to leak snippets online before its release, while the editor thought secrecy was best. Meghan even asked if the magazine could hit the shelves in the US before the UK, according to the book, which ruffled feathers with head of communications, Sara Latham. The Sussexes have been contacted for comment.
