Saints Could Cut Ties With Former Chiefs Super Bowl Champion
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New Orleans Saints are certainly not viewed as playoff contenders heading into the 2025 NFL season, as they have a very unsettled quarterback situation and gaping holes on both sides of the ball. As you would expect from a rebuilding team, the Saints seem to be prioritizing youth, which is why some of their veterans may not be safe before Week 1. More news: Patrick Mahomes Haters Will Love This Scathing Chiefs Prediction Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport listed off one top cut candidate for each NFL prior to the coming season, and for the Saints, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the choice. "Alvin Kamara is the unquestioned lead back in the Big Easy. Kendre Miller appears safely entrenched as the RB2," Davenport wrote. "With Devin Neal and Velus Jones Jr. widely projected to round out the position group, both Edwards-Helaire and Cam Akers are former NFL starters who could be searching for new homes after cutdown day." The New Orleans Saints will welcome vaccinated fans to the Superdome at full capacity this NFL season, as well as those providing negative COVID-19 tests. Those who don't wish to comply with the rules, including season ticket holders, will not be given refunds. This image shows a Saints helmet at M&T Bank Stadium on August 14, 2021 in Baltimore, Maryland. More Scott Taetsch/Getty Edwards-Helaire barely saw the field during his debut campaign with New Orleans last year, appearing in just two games and carrying the ball 13 times for 46 yards. With the Saints having so many other options in their backfield, Davenport is right in asserting that Edwards-Helaire is absolutely on the chopping block. The 26-year-old has certainly not materialized like everyone hoped when the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire did show some promise in Year 1, registering 803 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 4.4 yards per carry while also catching 36 passes for 297 yards and a score. However, it did not take long for the LSU product to experience a sharp downturn. The following season, Edwards-Helaire totaled 517 yards while reaching the end zone four times as a rusher, playing in just 10 games. Injuries have largely derailed him ever since, with the Baton Rouge, La. native appearing in just 37 contests over the last four seasons. More news: Insider Reveals Bad News for 49ers' Critical Defender Edwards-Helaire did manage to win a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2023, although his role was incredibly limited. That season, he logged 223 yards and a touchdown as a rusher, serving as Kansas City's No. 2 running back behind Isiah Pacheco. At this point, Edwards-Helaire's NFL future is undoubtedly in jeopardy, especially if the Saints end up releasing him before the start of the season. He definitely had a strong collegiate career, racking up 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns on 6.6 yards per attempt during his final year at LSU, but that obviously has not translated onto the professional level. We'll see if New Orleans ends up pulling the plug on Edwards-Helaire before long. For more on the Saints and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

Countdown to Kickoff: Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the Saints Player of Day 23
Edwards-Helaire is looking to revive his once-promising career In 23 days, the New Orleans Saints will kick off their 2025 regular season when they host the Arizona Cardinals. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire wears No. 23 for New Orleans currently, looking for his second straight year with the squad. A local Louisiana product, Edwards-Helaire is our Saints Player of the Day. Now trying to revive his once-promising career with his hometown team, here's a closer look at Edwards-Helaire's background. A four-star recruit at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge where he starred for four years, Louisiana State University kept Edwards-Helaire close to home. He'd see light action as a true freshman before earning a bigger role in 2018 with 658 rushing yards. During the Tigers historic national championship season of 2019, Edwards-Helaire led the squad with 1,414 yards rushing and topped the SEC with 16 rushing scores. He also added an impressive 55 receptions for 453 yards that year while bringing in 1st Team All-SEC honors. Edwards-Helaire declared for the NFL draft in 2020, where the Kansas City Chiefs made him the first running back selected with the final choice of the first round. As a rookie, Edwards-Helaire led the Chiefs with 803 rushing yards. He'd add 36 catches for 297 yards for a Kansas City team that advanced to Super Bowl LV. A knee injury caused Edwards-Helaire to miss seven outings in 2021, though his 517 yards on the ground were still second on the team. In 2022, he dealt with more injuries that limited him to 10 contests. Kansas City went on to win Super Bowl LVII that season, but with Edwards-Helaire managing just 453 total yards and playing a secondary role in the backfield to Isaiah Pacheco. He remained behind Pacheco in 2023, picking up just 411 scrimmage yards in 15 games as the Chiefs won back-to-back Super Bowl titles. Personal off-field issues caused Edwards-Helaire to start the 2024 campaign on the non-football injury list (NFI). He was activated by the Chiefs in October, but released in December without appearing in a game. New Orleans quickly signed Edwards-Helaire, playing him in the final two games of the season. In those contests, he rushed for 46 yards and added 24 more with 3 catches. He enters the 2025 season with 1,891 career rushing yards, with an average of 4.2 per carry, along with 92 receptions for 789 yards and 19 total touchdowns. At only 26, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is now trying to revive his career after a very promising start. The Saints are hoping that he'll provide a legitimate backfield complement to Alvin Kamara, something their offense has lacked for some time. Edwards-Helaire is a capable receiver out of the backfield and excellent on blitz pickup assignments, but must show that he can consistently be productive as a runner between the tackles. If he can, he might hold off competition from Cam Akers, Devin Neal, and Marcus Yarns to push Kendre Miller as the team's number two back.

NFL draft history: Every player selected with the 32nd overall pick since 2015
NFL draft history: Every player selected with the 32nd overall pick since 2015 With the NFL draft just days away, we're looking back at every No. 32 pick going back to 2015 The Eagles are champions, and with the Super Bowl behind us, all eyes will turn toward the 2025 NFL draft. The first day will feature only the first round, the second day will feature the second and third rounds, and the draft will conclude with the final four rounds on the third day. This year, the NFL Draft will begin at Lambeau Field in the Titletown district in Green Bay, Wisconsin. With the first round just hours away, we're looking at the history of the No. 32 overall pick. 2024: Xavier Legette, WR, Panthers Legette underwent surgery to address a lingering issue he played through during the 2024 campaign. The first-rounder is coming off an underwhelming rookie campaign, having recorded 49 catches for 497 yards and four touchdowns on 87 targets across 16 regular-season appearances. 2023: Joey Porter Jr., CB, Steelers Porter totaled 70 tackles (53 solo) and seven pass defenses, including an interception, over 16 regular-season contests in 2024. Porter solidified a starting role in his second year as a pro, playing at least 95 percent of Pittsburgh's defensive snaps in 15 of his 16 games. The Penn State product improved upon his rookie numbers in tackles but had three fewer defensed passes. 2022: Lewis Cine, S, Vikings Cine was selected by Minnesota 32nd overall in the 2022 draft and joined the Bills' practice squad after being released by the Vikings last summer. He broke his leg during his rookie season and was limited to playing 10 defensive snaps in 10 games over his two years in Minnesota. The 24-year-old from Haiti is listed at 6-foot-2 and 199 pounds and is a low-risk signing after a decorated college career at Georgia. Cine earned defensive MVP honors in Georgia's 33-18 win over Alabama in the national championship game in the 2021 season. 2021: Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, DE, Buccaneers A 2021 first-round pick of the Buccaneers, Tryon-Shoyinka saw his snap count reduce in each of his final two seasons with Tampa Bay, culminating in a career-low 24 tackles (15 solo), including 2.0 sacks, across 15 regular-season appearances in 2024. 2020: Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB, Chiefs Edwards-Helaire started the 2024 season on the Chiefs' reserve/non-football illness list. He was activated from the NFI list Oct. 15 but was a healthy scratch for the next nine games and was ultimately waived by Kansas City in mid-December. After pondering retirement, he signed with the Saints' practice squad two days later and was elevated for the final two games of the regular season, during which he logged 13 carries for 46 yards while adding three catches (on five targets) for 24 yards. By signing a future contract, Edwards-Helaire will be on the Saints' 90-man roster for the start of the new league year, March 12. Harry spent the offseason with Minnesota and landed on the Vikings' practice squad to start the season. He was later cut and signed with Seattle in early November. Harry hasn't caught a regular-season pass since 2022 with Chicago. The 2019 first-round pick most recently appeared in nine games with the Vikings in 2023, failing to record a stat across 69 total snaps (20 offensive and 49 on special teams). 2018: Lamar Jackson, QB, Ravens Jackson, the most accomplished No. 32 overall pick in NFL history, signed a five-year, reported $260 million deal during the 2023 offseason, making him the league's highest-paid player. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Jackson has been the 8th quarterback since the 1970 merger, earning three or more first-team All-Pro selections. Jackson's other first-team All-Pro selections came in 2019 and 2023. 2017: Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Saints Ramczyk announced his retirement from the NFL last week. The 32nd overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Ramczyk injured his knee in Week 14 of the 2023 season and was never medically cleared to play again, missing the entirety of the 2024 campaign. Before the injury, Ramczyk was one of the best right tackles in the league, earning first-team All-Pro honors once and second-team All-Pro twice. He started all 101 games he appeared in during his seven seasons with the Saints. 2016: Emmanuel Ogbah, DE, Browns Ogbah finished the 2024 regular season with 49 tackles (27 solo), 5.0 sacks, two pass defenses (including one interception), and one forced fumble across 16 games. Ogbah tied veteran Calais Campbell for the third-most sacks on the Dolphins behind Zach Sieler (10.0) and Chop Robinson (6.0). Ogbah has logged 5.0 sacks in back-to-back seasons, and his 49 combined tackles were his most since his rookie year in 2016 with the Browns (53). 2015: Malcom Brown, DT, Patriots Brown appeared in all 17 games for the Jaguars last year and recorded a career-high 57 tackles and two sacks across 653 defensive snaps. The eighth-year pro has been a productive defensive tackle with New England, New Orleans, and Jacksonville.

Report: Saints to re-sign former Chiefs first-round pick
According to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday, the New Orleans Saints are re-signing former Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to a one-year contract. Edwards-Helaire was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Louisianna State University, where he was a CFP National Championship in 2019. The former Tiger won two Super Bowls in four years with Kansas City and won two Super Bowl titles with the Chiefs before eventually seeing his time with the team end after training camp last season. Take a look at Schefter's report about Edwards-Helaire's decision to re-sign with the Saints: Saints re-signed running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to a one-year contract. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 13, 2025 The former first-round pick was expected to be the next big sensation for Kansas City but, unfortunately, he never fully lived up to the hype. A native of Baton Rouge, Edwards-Helaire will have a chance to compete for a Super Bowl with his local team.
