In an interview with FRANCE 24, former Mossad chief Efraim Halevy said "there is a major confrontation between Israel and its enemies at this particular point in time" and that Israel "had no option but to return and to make sure that we are safe". Regarding the recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Halevy called them "a success" but said it was "too early to say" if the US attack on the Fordo nuclear facility achieved its aim.
Asked about the 21-month-long war in Gaza, Halevy admitted that " Hamas is still there". He also stated "I don't think we are committing war crimes" and claimed that the Israeli military is "respecting international law".
Finally, the former Mossad chief described jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti as "probably the most sane and the most qualified person" to lead the Palestinians, despite Israeli government opposition.
