Sisi: Uganda is Egypt's key partner in southern Nile Basin
CAIRO, Aug 12 (MENA) – President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has stressed that Uganda is a key partner of Egypt in the southern Nile Basin region, expressing Cairo's aspiration that the African country can be among the primary beneficiaries of the Egyptian mechanisms designated to support development in Nile Basin countries. President Sisi's remarks came during his speech at the Egypt-Uganda Businessmen Forum, which was inaugurated Tuesday in the presence of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. Sisi also lauded the organization of the forum, which brings together leading business figures from both countries. He noted that the forum reflects the depth of the extended bonds of friendship between Egypt and Uganda, as well as their firm determination to expand partnerships across various fields of cooperation for the benefit of their peoples. Egypt looks forward to enhancing economic cooperation and increasing the volume of trade exchange, which reached about $133 million in 2024, and expected to double this figure, President Sisi said. He underscored the need for accelerating the formation of the Egyptian-Ugandan Joint Business Council, increasing the exchange of business delegations, and encouraging companies in both countries to boost their exports — particularly in sectors like agriculture, pharmaceuticals, building materials, electrical appliances, and other products that meet the needs of markets. The president noted that the forum is a practical step toward translating the strength of bilateral political relations into concrete projects that benefit Egyptian and Ugandan peoples, based on a win-win approach. Sisi said the private sector and entrepreneurs in both countries should be the driving force of partnership in economy, trade, and investment, while the role of governments is to provide the legal and political frameworks that enable these partnerships to thrive. President Sisi reaffirmed that Egypt, as always, extends its hand to Uganda — as a partner, brother, and friend — within a framework of mutual respect and shared interests. (MENA)

Egypt's Foreign Minister discusses Nile water security with Ugandan president
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Entebbe on Monday to discuss Egypt's 'existential' concerns over its water security and ways to boost bilateral ties, the Egyptian foreign ministry said. Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, also attended the high-level meeting during the official visit to Uganda. In a statement, the ministry said Abdelatty conveyed Egypt's concerns regarding the Nile River and stressed the need to adhere to international law for shared water resources. He voiced Egypt's rejection of 'unilateral actions' in the eastern Nile Basin and affirmed that Cairo 'will take all necessary measures under international law to protect its water security.' 'The waters of the Nile are an existential issue for Egypt,' Abdelatty told the Ugandan president. The minister of water resources and irrigation reiterated that respect for international law on the Nile River is the basis for positive cooperation to achieve the common interest of all basin countries. During the meeting, Abdelatty, who conveyed greetings from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, also called for the formation of a joint Egyptian-Ugandan business council to boost investment in sectors like construction, energy, and pharmaceuticals. He highlighted the potential for joint projects through a financing mechanism recently established by Egypt to support development in southern Nile Basin countries. The officials also discussed regional security developments, including the situation in the Horn of Africa and counter-terrorism efforts. For his part, President Museveni asked for his greetings to be passed to President Sisi and stressed his country's keenness to enhance bilateral cooperation, the statement said. Separately, Abdelatty and Sewilam also met with Ugandan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello, in Kampala. In that meeting, they discussed similar issues of economic cooperation and regional security, and Abdelatty delivered a grant of agricultural equipment and light transport vehicles to a Ugandan non-governmental organisation that supports youth and small-scale farmers.

Egyptian, Ugandan FMs probe ways to strengthen ties
CAIRO – 16 June 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held a phone call Monday with Ugandan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Henry Oryem Okello to discuss how to further strengthen Egyptian-Ugandan relations and promote coordination and consultation on issues of mutual interest. The two sides exchanged views on ways to advance relations between both nations in various fields, especially as regards economic and investment cooperation, in addition to technical and developmental areas, including infrastructure and energy projects. The call also addressed the importance of activating existing cooperation mechanisms to contribute to advancing relations to broader horizons. Abdelatty stressed the importance of preparing for the second round of joint political and technical consultations, with the participation of the foreign and irrigation ministers of the two countries, at the nearest possible time so as to contribute to shoring up cooperation and achieving mutual interests in a sustainable manner. He highlighted the importance of building on the fruitful cooperation achieved over the past years and exploring new opportunities to expand areas of partnership, to serve the benefit of the peoples of both sisterly countries. The two ministers concluded their conversation by affirming joint commitment to continued consultation and coordination over the coming period and to working on arranging high-level reciprocal visits that would contribute to advancing relations and reflect the depth of the historical and fraternal bonds that unite the two countries
