Gaza journalist killings part of Israel's ‘media genocide': Egypt Journalists Syndicate - Foreign Affairs

The Egyptian Journalists Syndicate has condemned what it called a 'heinous crime' by Israeli forces in the killing of six Palestinian journalists near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, describing it as part of a wider 'media genocide' targeting reporters in the enclave. The targeted Israeli airstrike killed Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohamed Qureiqa, photojournalists Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa, freelance reporter Mohamed Khalidi, and al-Sharif's 19-year-old nephew, Mosaab al-Sharif, according to officials at Al-Shifa Hospital. In a Monday statement, the syndicate said it "mourns the six colleagues, and also mourns the global conscience, which is being buried day after day along with the witnesses of truth and the martyrs of genocide and systematic starvation inflicted by the Zionist war machine on the people of Gaza." It said the killings—acknowledged by the Israeli military—formed part of a systematic campaign against Gaza's press. The Israeli army has deliberately killed over 230 journalists and media workers since the war began, it noted, surpassing the combined death toll of reporters in the Vietnam and Iraq wars and marking the deadliest conflict for the profession since World War II. The syndicate said the Israeli army had wounded hundreds more journalists, detained dozens without charge, and destroyed the homes of many, leaving them displaced. It accused Israel of seeking to silence coverage by targeting reporters' families and destroying their homes, while weaponizing starvation as 'a tool of genocide.' It also accused the United States of providing direct military and political support to Israel and denounced what it called 'shameful international complicity' and 'unprecedented Arab weakness.' The statement urged urgent international action to halt the 'ongoing crime' and bring those responsible to trial, warning that failure to act would make expressions of solidarity 'a form of complicity' in genocide. 'This is not the journalists' battle alone,' it said. 'It is a human battle against a killing machine that will not even allow the victims to tell their own story—one that must end the era of impunity before Gaza and the world's conscience are buried together.' Egyptian Journalists Syndicate heads slams Emad Adib's meeting with Israel's Yair Lapid

The Head of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, Khaled al-Balshy, responded to the television interview between journalist Emad Adib and former Israeli Prime Minister and opposition leader Yair Lapid. Balshy affirmed the Syndicate's firm position rejecting any form of normalization with Zionists. 'The Syndicate's General Assembly's firm position rejects all forms of professional, union, and personal normalization (with Zionists),' he stressed. He declared in a Friday statement 'From this standpoint, I declare my rejection of the professional and humanitarian crime committed by Adib in his interview with the Zionist Yair Lapid, during which he provided a platform to justify the war crimes committed by the occupation army and its crimes in the region.' 'Adib was removed from the Syndicate's list following a decision by the preliminary disciplinary committee in September 2020, for arbitrarily dismissing dozens of fellow journalists at Al-Alam Al-Youm newspaper and retroactively closing their insurance files for five years prior to 2014. He is no longer a member of the Journalists Syndicate.' He also assured that the union would not have hesitated to immediately punish Adib had he retained his membership. Balshy called on all fellow journalists to abide by the union's general assembly's decision, emphasizing that any member who violates the decision will be immediately referred to a union investigation.

Egypt Journalists Syndicate condemns Israeli officials' provocative statements on Sinai - Foreign Affairs

The Egyptian Journalists Syndicate on Tuesday condemned the recent provocative statements made by Israeli officials concerning Sinai. The Syndicate described the remarks as a blatant infringement on Egypt's sovereignty and a direct challenge to the country's right to strengthen its military and defense presence across all its territory. Moreover, the Syndicate condemned recent Israeli calls for forced evacuation of Rafah and forcible displacement of Gaza's residents, describing them as a continuation of the brutal aggression and an attempt to criminalise defenseless civilians under false pretexts. Israeli media, citing senior officials, reported on Monday that Israel claimed that the number of forces Egypt had deployed in Sinai exceeds that prescribed by the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries. In addition, Israel claimed that Egypt had expanded port facilities and extended airport runways — actions they said constitute a violation of the Egypt-Israel 1979 peace treaty. On Monday, the Israeli military issued broad evacuation orders across much of Rafah, signaling the potential launch of a new large-scale ground operation in Gaza's southernmost city. The Syndicate's statement described Israeli officials' remarks as a desperate attempt to divert attention from the atrocities the occupation forces committed against innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip—particularly in Rafah. Rejecting displacement and demanding justice The Syndicate stated that Israel was not fighting a legitimate war in Gaza but perpetrating a systematic genocide against an unarmed population. It called for immediate Arab and international action to halt the massacres and prosecute the occupation's leaders as war criminals before international courts. In this context, the Syndicate reaffirmed that it categorically rejects all displacement plans and that the international community—especially the United States and Europe— should be held accountable for their shameful complicity in these crimes through ongoing political and military support for Israel. Moreover, the Syndicate denounced what it described as "shameful Arab silence" before the Israeli occupation army's atrocities against the Palestinian people, which constitute one of the most extensive ethnic cleansing operations in modern history. The Syndicate also voiced its full support for all Egyptian state institutions' measures to exercise full national sovereignty over the country's borders in Sinai. Call for global action In its statement, the Syndicate called for reviewing and immediately suspending the Camp David Accords in retaliation for Israel's recent provocative statements and repeated violations. The Syndicate also called for immediately opening all crossings to humanitarian aid and lifting the inhumane siege. It called for protecting Palestinian journalists, whose blood was spilled for reporting the truth, and for holding Israel accountable for deliberately targeting them. In conclusion, the Syndicate called on all media and human rights institutions to expose Israeli practices and reveal the falsity of its narrative. It also urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the United Nations to impose international sanctions on Israel. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
