OPEN// EU ambassador: Elevating relations with Egypt to strategic partnership well-deserved merit for country

CAIRO, May 23 (MENA) - Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst said Egypt under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has made enormous achievements that have strengthened its regional position and economic capabilities. This has encouraged the EU to elevate its relations with Egypt to the level of a strategic partnership, Eichhorst said in an interview with the Egyptian Radio. The elevation of EU-Egypt relations to a strategic partnership last year was not some sort of "political courtesy," but rather a well-deserved merit for Egypt, the EU ambassador said. She noted that elevating relations between the EU and other countries rarely happens, and for Egypt, it reflects a deep appreciation for President Sisi, the government, and Egypt. The partnership between Egypt and the European Union benefits everyone in all areas, she pointed out. 'We in the European Union appreciate the speed and efficiency of development taking place in Egypt's infrastructure, its pioneering role in the region, its protection of refugee rights, and its support for preventing illegal migration. We in the European Union also fully understand the current regional conditions and their impact on Egypt, and we equally recognize the importance of the Suez Canal and Egypt's importance to the entire world," Eichhorst said. Meanwhile, the EU ambassador expressed her fascination with the Egyptian civilization and culture, saying that since arriving in Cairo to assume her post, she has visited the Egyptian Museum six times. She noted that the Grand Egyptian Museum, which will be inaugurated early next July, is the largest archaeological museum in the world. She emphasized that, due to her interest in human heritage, she visited all the world's museums before coming to Egypt last November and visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum. "It is the most important and largest museum I have ever seen," she said. Regarding European cooperation with Egypt, Eichhorst noted that cooperation is extended and that she personally supports stimulating European investments in Egypt, which she said have reached €50 billion in recent investment agreements. There is significant European support for Egypt in the fields of energy, renewable energy, water, and green hydrogen, she said. She also pointed out to partnerships between both sides in areas of technological development, digital support, and education. (MENA) I S N/R E E

The Brussels ministerial meeting will be chaired by Kaja Kallas, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. It will be preceded by a meeting of the council of European foreign affairs and defense ministers. The so-called new European model, which is a form of humanitarian aid systems, will be proposed next week, Eichhorst said, noting that negotiations are underway on ways to deliver humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. She said discussions are underway to disburse the EU €4 billion second tranche for Egypt. The European diplomat reviewed the negative impacts of the climate change on Alexandria governorate that faces several climate changes. Second tranche of EU financial package to arrive in Egypt within weeks: Ambassador

The European Union's Ambassador to Egypt, Angelina Eichhorst, announced that the second tranche of the European financial package – worth four billion euros as part of the overall financial support package for Egypt – is expected to be disbursed within weeks. On the sidelines of her current visit to Aswan, Eichhorst explained that the exact date for the disbursement of the second tranche, which was approved by the European Parliament in April, has not yet been determined. Remarkable progress She added that during her field visits, she reviewed some projects in Aswan, including 'Tahweesha,' 'Tamkeen,' and 'Dawy,' which are supported by the EU, and said she witnessed remarkable progress – especially since it is not easy for any society to integrate women into projects. Eichhorst noted that discussions are currently underway with Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Rania al-Mashat regarding the 2026-2028 program and the Egyptian government's priorities, including building support for girls and women. Furthermore, the Egyptian Finance Ministry intends to cover the new budget deficit by issuing new domestic debt instruments worth LE 2.2 trillion, with LE 2.2 trillion in treasury bills and LE928.9 billion in treasury bonds, as part of the government's plan to increase spending on social welfare and bridge the budget deficit. The ministry also plans to issue international bonds worth no less than four billion US dollars during the next fiscal year, as part of a program to issue international bonds totaling four billion dollars. The financing gap in the draft budget for the next fiscal year is expected to increase by more than 25 percent to LE 3.6 trillion, and the draft budget has set the exchange rate at LE 50 to the US dollar. Egypt seeks to reduce financing gap The Chairman of the Planning and Budget Committee in the House of Representatives Fakhry al-Fekki said that the government seeks to reduce the financing gap by obtaining funding from international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the European Union, in addition to issuing international bonds and sukuks. Fekki estimated the financing gap for the remainder of the current fiscal year 2024/2025 at approximately four billion dollars, which will be financed by issuing international bonds in foreign markets, in addition to obtaining US$1.3 billion in resilience and sustainability financing from the International Monetary Fund to address the effects of climate change.
