1,300-tonne viaduct deck slid into place on HS2 route

A 1,300-tonne viaduct deck has been slid into place as part of HS2. The viaduct, which is 220 metres long and constructed from steel and concrete, was assembled alongside its final location before being carefully moved into position over three days, reaching its northern abutment on June 20. Sam Arrowsmith, project manager at HS2 Ltd, said: "It's great to see the viaduct deck in position and I'd like to thank everyone who's helped get us to where we are today. "The slide may only have taken three days, but it was the culmination of four years of work – developing the design, completing the groundworks and the piers and assembling the enormous steelwork." The viaduct will eventually carry high-speed trains over Banbury Lane and forms part of the new HS2 route between London and the West Midlands. It is designed to manage flood risk by maintaining natural water flow in the valley, and features weathering steel intended to blend into the rural landscape. The deck was slid into place using PTFE-coated pads to reduce friction between the structure and the temporary steel bearings on the five supporting concrete piers. Lower Thorpe is the last of five viaducts installed using this method by EKFB, the main contractor for the central section of HS2. EKFB is a consortium comprising Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall. With the steelwork now in place, the next phase will see the deck lowered 60 centimetres onto its permanent bearings, followed by construction of the concrete deck and parapets. Janice McKenna, technical director at EKFB, said: "The strategic design approach applied to these double composite structures has been a game-changer in how we're building these viaducts. "The double composite solution can be applied to multiple structures in different locations, and we have five across EKFB's 50-mile route that are all well into construction. "The philosophy was to design the viaducts with architectural input to 'blend' the structures into their respective landscapes and reduce the visual impact on the environment. "We also required a solution that offered specific delivery benefits too, from saving embedded carbon in the materials we use, to enhancing productivity on site and reducing safety risk." The double composite design uses steel beams with reinforced concrete layers above and below, reducing the carbon footprint by up to 59 per cent compared to traditional pre-stressed concrete beams. The viaduct will eventually support high-speed trains between London and the West Midlands, easing congestion and increasing capacity on the existing rail network.

Construction of mixed-use development Sensorium completes in France

Eiffage Construction, a division of European construction company Eiffage, has announced the completion of the Sensorium, a mixed-use development in France. Located at the entrance of La Madeleine, near Vieux-Lille, the Sensorium is a project delivered by Eiffage Construction, which served as the general contractor. The development, which took nearly three years to complete, features 135 housing units, including 41 social rental units and adapted housing for young adults with autism-spectrum disorders, alongside 18,000m² of office space, shops, restaurants, collaborative spaces, and outdoor areas. The entire development is centred around a new city gateway square, which includes a central park filled with trees, a public square, a pedestrian walkway, children's play areas, and a two-way access road. This project has also seen the planting of more than 300 trees, quadrupling the initial number. The rooftops of the Sensorium boast shared terraces that are accessible to all residents, complete with vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and climbing plants, contributing to the greenery of the development. The project prioritised environmental sustainability, with the use of low-carbon concrete throughout the construction. The office space foundation slab's concrete saved an estimated 280 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, Eiffage stated. In terms of energy performance, the development's office spaces are aiming for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method Excellent certification and the Haute Qualité Environnementale Sustainable Building and E2C1 labels while the housing units are targeting the BEE+ label. The construction site engaged up to 200 workers and utilised four cranes, with logistics managed to allow the simultaneous construction of the office and housing phases. The project team includes Bouygues Immobilier and Sogeprom-Projectim as project owners, Dehaene + partenaires architectes urbanistes as the architect, and several engineering and construction economy companies such as PROJEX, DIAGOBAT, EGIS, URBA FOLIA, and OPTIBAT. Eiffage Énergie Systèmes handled the electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and building management systems for the offices while Eiffage Route was responsible for roadworks and utilities. Earlier this April, Eiffage Construction also completed the delivery of three production halls for Airbus Atlantic in Rochefort, France. Eiffage Construction delivers three production halls for Airbus Atlantic in Rochefort, France

Eiffage Construction, a division of European construction company Eiffage, has completed the delivery of three production halls for Airbus Atlantic in Rochefort, France. The halls, part of a design-build contract awarded in April 2023, are expected to accelerate the aircraft manufacturer's production and create 200 jobs in the region. Eiffage Construction claims the project necessitated meeting tight deadlines, delivering the halls in time while adhering to stringent technical and environmental standards. The two 2,441m² storage spaces, Hall 1 and 2, and the 1,920m² Hall 3 each have distinguishing features. The structure of Halls 1 and 2 incorporates a steel frame, acoustic cladding, and a double-layer roof, designed to meet the demands of a high-performance logistics facility. Hall 3, a production workshop, features a hybrid concrete and wood structure, complemented by finishes matching those of the first two halls. A 575m² building situated between Halls 2 and 3 provides essential social areas, including offices and toilet facilities. The project's energy efficiency measures boast a 20% reduction in energy consumption compared to RT2012 thermal regulations and compliance with the latest RE2020 standards for office spaces. Eiffage Construction has also implemented an optimised rainwater management system, which includes underground tanks designed to collect runoff from fires, roofs, and parking areas. ARTELIA acted as the client representative for the project. The project team included BPG as the lead architect and ILAO as the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineer. Eiffage Route managed roadworks and utilities, with KELLER handling rigid inclusions, and FRANKI Fondation in charge of piling. Earlier this month, Eiffage, through its subsidiary Eiffage Construcción, in partnership with Acciona, won a contract to design and construct a new urban circuit in Madrid, Spain, which will potentially host Formula 1 races. Madrid F1 circuit can be the world's best, says Carlos Sainz

Madrid's Madring Formula One circuit can host the best race on the calendar when it debuts next season, according to home driver Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard told reporters on Friday the 5.47km layout, with 22 turns, will have its own hybrid character with tight street sections and a more open area with high-speed corners. 'I think we can be the best circuit in the world and the best event of the whole calendar,' said the Madrid-born Williams driver, who took part in a press conference as an event ambassador. 'There will be 24 or 25 races, and I honestly think along with Mexico, Miami, Las Vegas that do it very well but sincerely I trust a lot in Madrid and I believe that Madrid can do better.' Local authorities said licences and paperwork were ready from Friday for building work to begin. Spanish engineering firm Acciona and France's Eiffage have won the contract to construct the circuit in an urban area in Madrid's northeast, around the IFEMA exhibition centre. It is expected to be completed by May 2026 and cost €83.2m (R1.76bn), Acciona said. The Madrid circuit will eventually replace Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya, host of the Spanish Grand Prix, which is located some 32km from the eastern port city with a roughly 45-minute walk from the nearest station. Spain is set for an overlap next season with Madrid and Barcelona, which will be in the last year of its contract, both expected to feature.
