Focus on Bengali, unity at I-Day celebrations on Red Road today

1 2 Kolkata: Language and unity will be the focus of the Independence Day celebrations on Red Road on Friday. In the backdrop of incidents where Bengali-speaking people have faced harassment in other states, the Bengal govt will promote the rich heritage of the Bengali language and pay tribute to Bengal-born legends. "The aim is to foster understanding and appreciation of Bengali culture by highlighting the achievements and sacrifices of notable figures from Bengal who played pivotal roles in the nation's history," a govt official said. Forty-nine students from Bhagwati Devi Girls High School will participate in the walk-past, where alphabets of various languages, including Bengali, will be displayed through placards. Meanwhile, 110 students from Jodhpur Park Boys' High School will carry 100 pictures of national icons, like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. An official from the school education department said, "All the placards were distributed to the students to display during the programme, which has the theme 'Ekata'. This year, the programme on Red Road will start at 10.35 am with CM Mamata Banerjee hoisting the flag. There will be the presentation of a Durga tableau by the tourism department, followed by a Sampriti rally and the 'Ekata' walk-past by the information & cultural department, department of women and child development and social welfare, and school education department.
