Brisbane's Ekka winds a sign the Royal Queensland Show is just around the corner

The Ekka is almost here – and Brisbanites know it before they even check the calendar. The telltale sign? Those infamous dry, gusty westerlies that locals love to hate: the 'Ekka winds'. Every August, a familiar chill sweeps through the southeast, announcing one of the most anticipated events of the year: the Royal Queensland Show. So, what's behind this seasonal phenomenon? 7NEWS Queensland meteorologist Tony Auden said it is a mix of geography, timing and tradition. 'The so-called 'Ekka westerly winds' are famous in southeast Queensland because they feel very different to winds at most other times of the year,' Auden said. These winds are typically dry, bringing clear sunny skies. But that's not what makes them memorable. 'The westerly direction means the wind flows over mountain ranges, which creates waves in the air and gives us that distinct gustiness,' he explained. 'It can be calm for long periods, then a strong gust comes out of nowhere.' The name dates back to the show's early days when these winds often blew through Brisbane during Ekka week in August. But Auden said the timing of these winds isn't as predictable anymore. 'These days, due to yearly variations and possibly a warming climate, they tend to peak earlier. 'In fact, we're just as likely to get a 30-degree day and a thunderstorm during the Ekka as we are to get any extended period of gusty westerlies.' While the Ekka winds aren't usually dangerous, they can still pack a punch. 'Most of the time, these westerlies peak around 60 to 70km/h. 'Warnings aren't required, but we do see a lot of debris come down from trees.' The strongest winds are often felt along the valley from Ipswich through to Brisbane, while the mountain ranges can shield the Gold and Sunshine Coast s from the worst of it, Auden added. In rare cases, unusual wind patterns can even form on the southern Gold Coast, creating a light easterly breeze. These winds also cause headaches for pilots as they've turned deadly before. 'They can cause turbulence for aircraf t, giving a bumpy ride at best and becoming dangerous in extreme cases,' Auden explained. 'Famous Australian singer Shirley Strachan from the band Skyhooks sadly died in a helicopter crash likely caused by severe turbulence in these westerly winds,' Auden said. So, while they might feel like a Brisbane tradition, the Ekka winds are more complex – and far less predictable – than most locals realise. And it's not just the gusts stirring things up. Health experts warn the mix of chilly winds and packed showgrounds creates the perfect conditions for spreading respiratory illnesses. Every year after the Ekka, Queensland hospitals report a spike in flu, RSV and COVID-19 cases. here.

Southwestern Queenslanders warned of potential snow this weekend

Southern Queenslanders are being warned they could see snowfall this weekend as an early burst of the 'Ekka westerlies' brings wintry conditions to the Sunshine State's southeast. Forecast models indicate Saturday morning is shaping up as the most likely time snow could fall down to elevations of 1200m. Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe says the chance of snow will largely depend on the position of an approaching low pressure system. 'There is definitely the potential for snow in southern Queensland this weekend,' he said. 'It is going to be a little bit touch and go, but it definitely cannot be ruled out. 'There is going to be a low pressure system and exactly how it guides the rain across NSW and Queensland will govern whether there is going to be any snow in southern Queensland.' Mr Sharpe said the mountain peaks along the Queensland-NSW border would be the most likely locations for snow. 'We're talking about your usual suspects, the tallest mountains in southern Queensland,' he said. 'The tallest mountain in southern Queensland is Mount Superbus, at 1375m. 'Even in the wetter scenario, it's a decent chance to get the snow right up at the top. 'Snow could fall as low as about 1200m, there is some significant elevation there in the Southern Downs.' Mr Sharpe said the more southerly the low pressure system, the better the chance for snowfall. 'If the low pressure system that's bringing the rain to NSW is too far north, then it will bring rain to Queensland and the air won't be quite cold enough,' he said. 'There won't be enough cold dry air mixing into the system on the Queensland border. 'But if the low is further south, and there's less rain to Queensland, there's actually going to be colder air in that system, and therefore better potential for snow.' Snow fell near Stanthorpe last year, with footage by Stanthorpe Holiday Park capturing a flurry along the New England Highway at Severnlea. Outside of Queensland Bureau of Meteorology Senior meteorologist Angus Hines predicted 'patchy falls' across much of South Australia and NSW on Tuesday, with a chance of rain in Victoria and Tasmania. 'Not as much rain as the recent wet weather event, but a nice follow up of 2-10mm over broad areas,' Mr Hines said. 'This weather system will have some colder air with it, and a good few centimetres of snow in the mountains. 'This will clear on Wednesday, although cold winds and patchy showers continue. 'This means further sporadic and light wet weather for most places south of a line from Perth across to Port Macquarie.'

‘Su From So' movie review: JP Thuminad delivers a refreshing and hilarious horror comedy

Very few films grab your attention from the first frame. In Su From So, after a jumpscare, a death is announced, and the entire village in the coastal Karnataka region gathers for elaborate mourning rituals and a feast that follows it. Debutant director JP Thuminad (the actor who played Deepak in SSE Side B) establishes the backdrop and its people with a gentle song. S Chandrasekaran's cinematography draws you into the picturesque setting. Music is the heartbeat of Su From So, a refreshing horror comedy. Unheralded composer Sumedh K and Sandeep Tulasidas, who has scored the BGM, elevate the several moods with their brilliant work. Director JP Thuminad's generous use of songs to drive the narrative results in an emotional manipulation, albeit in a good way. Su From So (Kannada) Director: JP Thuminad Cast: JP Thuminad, Shaneel Gautham, Sandhya Arakere, Prakash Thuminadu, Deepak Rai Panaje Runtime: 137 minutes Storyline: In a quiet village, everyone's convinced that a youngster is possessed. A series of strange and hilarious events unfold as people try to drive away the ghost. The movie begins with goofy fun, and it helps when you have funny, charming actors such as Shaneel Gautham, Prakash Thuminad, and Deepak Rai Panaje exuding vibrant energy to the narrative with their brilliant comic timing. Actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty, who backed the film under his banner, has great fun essaying a parodical character. The film thankfully, doesn't get reduced to a series of comedic sketches, as the plot kicks in at the right time. It's challenging to discuss the central plot without revealing crucial details. The spoiler-free description of the conflict is that the villagers face a Herculean task to drive away a spirit, named Sulochana, from Someshwara (hence the title), that has possessed a youngster named Ashoka (JP Thuminad). The director derives comedy from a variety of ridiculous reactions and zany situations. He also deploys observational humour, highlighting eccentric characters (like the one played by Pushparaj Bolar) whom you miss without a keen eye. Apart from having plenty of scenes that combine humour with supernatural events, Su From So has standalone comedy sequences to generate the big laughs. JP Thuminad's control over the genre is so strong that we don't mind these scenes, even if they slightly delay the next turn in the story. In the final act, JP Thuminad resists the urge to be specific to a juicy genre, which allows you to go to any lengths to provide the thrills. He instead, treads a unique path, moving deftly moves from serious territory without making us feel the weight of it, and wraps it up as a horror comedy with a big heart. ALSO READ: 'Ekka' movie review: Yuva Rajkumar gives his all to a script that doesn't reward his effort Male characters flood the frames in Su From So. Yet, the film reaches its pinnacle when it tells a stirring tale of a woman (Sandhya Arakere in an affecting performance) fighting patriarchy. The film, which begins with words of high praise for the external beauty of villages, delves deep into its internal filth, the mindset of men who stop women from expressing themselves. This tonal shift is never jarring as Su From So ends on a rousing note, maintaining the assurance of a quality film till the very end. Su From So is currently running in theatres
