Real Madrid paying $5.6m for Trent Alexander-Arnold proves Liverpool got the last laugh
Liverpool is reportedly set to bank a tidy fee from Real Madrid for Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite the right-back being just weeks away from the end of his Reds contract. In any other summer, Alexander-Arnold would simply see out the final month of his Reds deal following the end of the season, before seamlessly transitioning to his Madrid contract on July 1. This summer's inaugural, revamped Club World Cup, though, complicates matters slightly. That's because soccer players' contracts tend to run until June 30 — and that date falls smack being in the middle of the 32-team tournament in the United States. An exceptional transfer window, which has been introduced so that participating clubs can register new players in time for the start of the tournament, will open on June 1 and close on June 10. READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE — Wirtz, Kerkez, Frimpong latest; Kelleher price set READ MORE: Ryan Gravenberch ban truth as Community Shield theory debunked after Liverpool red card It is during that window that Alexander-Arnold will join Los Blancos, and a report by Spanish outlet El Chiringuito reports that the Spanish giant will pay Liverpool around $5.6 million for the pleasure. That's despite previous reports that Liverpool was only looking for around $1.1 million to let Alexander-Arnold out of his contract a month early. If the El Chiringuito report is accurate, Liverpool stands to financially benefit to the tune of around $7 million from the deal (the $5.6 million fee plus more than $1 million in wages that the Reds would have been due to pay Alexander-Arnold in June). EXCLUSIVA de @jpedrerol "El MADRID pagará 5M al LIVERPOOL por ARNOLD para que juegue el Mundial de Clubes". "El fichaje de Carreras está muy cerca". — El Chiringuito TV (@elchiringuitotv) May 26, 2025 While that figure pales in comparison to Alexander-Arnold's market value, which stands at more than $80 million, it is better than losing him for absolutely nothing, which would have been the case in any other year. Alexander-Arnold was visibly emotional during his final Liverpool appearance over the weekend as he bid farewell to the club he has represented for the majority of his life. He told Sky Sports: "I didn't know what to expect stepping out at Anfield today after what happened a few weeks ago but I wanted to play for the club one more time, and I said that to the manager and he trusted me to go in at half-time. "To get the reception that I got means more than anything to me. I've played hundreds of games for the club but I've never felt more loved and more cared for than today. "From the bottom of my heart, I hope that one day, the fans and supporters of this club are able to recognize the hard work and everything that I've done for the team, because there wasn't a day, a minute or a second that I didn't think about the team, from six years old to 26 years old. "Twenty years is a very, very long time, but I've loved every single minute of it. The ups and the downs, coming through the academy to the first team, and then being part of the first team properly. It's been an honor and a privilege for me to be part of this club."

Real Madrid Offers No. 10 Shirt to French Star Mbappé
Madrid – SABA: Spanish media have reported that Real Madrid has offered French forward Kylian Mbappé the iconic No. 10 shirt for the upcoming season. According to the program El Chiringuito, the Spanish club proposed that Mbappé wear the jersey previously donned by Croatian legend Luka Modrić, following the veteran midfielder's departure from the team. Mbappé initially began his journey with Real Madrid wearing the No. 9 shirt, as his preferred number 7 was already taken by Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior. Now, the No. 10—once worn by Modrić—will be handed to the French striker. The No. 10 shirt carries a prestigious legacy at Real Madrid, having been worn by legendary players such as Mesut Özil, Portuguese icon Luís Figo, Clarence Seedorf, and most recently, Luka Modrić. It's worth noting that Mbappé also wears the No. 10 for the French national team and considers it his favorite number, alongside the No. 7, which he famously wore at Paris Saint-Germain in honor of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo. Live Real Madrid vs Arsenal: Build-up to Champions League clash as Real eye ‘La Remontada'
6:02PM Real fans line the street waiting to greet the team coach It is not just a Liverpool thing, then. Maybe you need a minimum number of European Cups to justify it. 6:01PM The hunt for the barmiest piece pre-match content It might well have come from one of the pundits on television show El Chiringuito. With thanks to Sport Witness for the translation. 'It's Holy Week and you know that God, God is a Real Madrid fan. God is from Real Madrid,' the man in question said. 'He who made us all. He's from Real Madrid. He wears the Real Madrid shirt. He wears the Real Madrid crest. Don't fight each other again.' 5:56PM What Arteta expects from Real Madrid Our approach is to win it. The same as we did in London,' Arteta told a news conference on Tuesday. Real Madrid are going to try to take us places we don't want to go. I understand it because it is part of their history and they have the right to be talking about these kinds of (comeback) scenarios. We have to show the mindset to win. To be brave, to be dominant and to be determined. We need to have the conviction that we can be better than them and win the game. 5:43PM Some of Jude Bellingham's pre-match thoughts It was one of the worst [first leg] results we could possibly imagine, and for some reason everyone thinks it's nailed-on that we will come back. It's a nice feeling, I have to say. It means there's a lot of trust in the talent. It means that you're at a club that's like no other, the best in the world, and that's what it represents and signifies to me. I think there's an expectation of Real Madrid that when we get in these holes we can come back. In England it's not as common but it does happen. The club have done it so many times, so the expectations are huge. 5:33PM Tonight's venue looks far more impressive inside than outside In an intriguing pre-match titbit, the roof of the Bernabeu is going to be closed after Uefa accepted a request from the club to do so. Presumably the idea is it helps to build the atmosphere inside the stadium. Arsenal did win an FA Cup final under a roof: they won 1-0 against Southampton at Cardiff's then Millennium Stadium in 2003. Their record under a roof since? Your guess is as good as mine. 5:26PM The 'dark magic' of the Bernabeu Sam Dean has taken a close look at where Real's confidence in achieving improbable comebacks comes from, and some of the highlights from recent seasons. The interesting thing is just how late these goals have come. Last season, Madrid scored twice in the final two minutes of the match through Joselu to beat Bayern Munich. In their 2022 semi-final, they scored twice in two stoppage-time minutes to defeat Manchester City. Earlier that season, Madrid were trailing by two goals with 30 minutes remaining of their second leg against Paris St-Germain. Karim Benzema promptly scored three goals, the third of which was converted only 11 seconds after his second. When Chelsea visited Madrid under the management of Thomas Tuchel, they were 10 minutes from victory when Luka Modric produced the most extraordinary assist. So for all the talk of Madrid tearing out of the traps, it could be that they are happy to play the long game and prey on any Arsenal vulnerabilities closer to the finish line. 5:16PM Player face masks seem to be popular among Real fans 5:14PM Yellow card watch Arsenal's priority must be quelling Real Madrid's attacks and making sure they qualify first, but it is worth noting they have four players at risk of missing the first leg against PSG should they pick up a yellow card. Those players are: Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey, Declan Rice and Gabriel Martinelli. All starters, but given the strength of PSG's midfield and threat on the flanks the availability of Timber and Rice feel critical. For Real Madrid, Antonio Rudiger, Luka Modric and Endrick are the players who are one booking away from suspension. Yellow cards are wiped after this round, but suspensions from yellows awarded in the quarter-final carry forward.

‘He Felt Spanish': Regragui Reveals Details of Lamine Yamal's Spain Choice
Doha – Morocco national team coach Walid Regragui disclosed the behind-the-scenes conversations that led to Lamine Yamal's decision to represent Spain instead of Morocco. Speaking on Tuesday night's Spanish television program El Chiringuito, Regragui detailed his pursuit of the Barcelona prodigy and accepted the player's choice with professional understanding. 'Lamine Yamal is a generational talent that we tried to bring to the Moroccan national team, but it wasn't possible,' Regragui stated. 'What he's doing at his age is incredible.' The Moroccan coach revealed multiple phone conversations with the young star, presenting him with the federation's ambitious projects. 'I had several telephone conversations with Yamal,' he said. 'I presented him with our projects for Morocco, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup,' Regragui explained. The coach confirmed discussions extended beyond the player himself: 'We spoke with the family, with him, and with his lawyer. It was the first case I had when I arrived at the national team.' According to the coach, Yamal's response came with respect and clarity. 'Two days later, he called me with respect and said 'Coach, thank you for the affection, but I'm going to choose Spain. I feel Spanish.'' 'He explained that he had been playing with Spain since youth levels, so I wished him the best, especially for his honesty and sincerity with me throughout the process,' the Atlas Lions' tactician reflected. Regragui praised the young player's directness throughout the process. 'We tried everything with the project we have with Morocco, with the African Cup in our country, with the 2030 World Cup, with all the affection the country could give to Lamine. But the boy never lied. He didn't play games about being Moroccan or Spanish.' 'Every Moroccan told me about Lamine,' Regragui added. 'They said 'there's a star at Barça and the priority for Morocco is to bring him.' We did everything, but he made his choice, so good luck. That's football.' 'I want to win the African Cup, the country deserves it' During the same interview with Josep Pedrerol, Regragui outlined his ambitions for Morocco's upcoming tournaments. 'I want to win the Africa Cup, the country deserves it. The passion for sport is incredible. There isn't a day when a Moroccan doesn't ask me to win,' he declared. The man behind Morocco's World Cup run also addressed his future with the national team. 'I have a contract until the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but in this job if you don't win, decisions come quickly,' he acknowledged. Since taking the helm, the coach has maintained a consistent winning rhythm, with Morocco remaining undefeated in official matches since June 2023. The team has suffered only one defeat in their last 20 encounters, building solid momentum ahead of their upcoming tournaments. When questioned about playing style, Regragui offered his philosophy: 'Playing well means being decisive in the final 30 meters and having possession, but always with the opponent's goal in mind.' He added, 'In football, as in all other sports, what fans want is to win.' Read also: Lamine Yamal Crowned World's Best Young Player with 2024 Kopa Trophy Tags: lamine yamalWalid Regragui
