‘He Felt Spanish': Regragui Reveals Details of Lamine Yamal's Spain Choice

Morocco World16-04-2025

Doha – Morocco national team coach Walid Regragui disclosed the behind-the-scenes conversations that led to Lamine Yamal's decision to represent Spain instead of Morocco.
Speaking on Tuesday night's Spanish television program El Chiringuito, Regragui detailed his pursuit of the Barcelona prodigy and accepted the player's choice with professional understanding.
'Lamine Yamal is a generational talent that we tried to bring to the Moroccan national team, but it wasn't possible,' Regragui stated. 'What he's doing at his age is incredible.'
The Moroccan coach revealed multiple phone conversations with the young star, presenting him with the federation's ambitious projects. 'I had several telephone conversations with Yamal,' he said.
'I presented him with our projects for Morocco, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup,' Regragui explained. The coach confirmed discussions extended beyond the player himself: 'We spoke with the family, with him, and with his lawyer. It was the first case I had when I arrived at the national team.'
According to the coach, Yamal's response came with respect and clarity. 'Two days later, he called me with respect and said 'Coach, thank you for the affection, but I'm going to choose Spain. I feel Spanish.''
'He explained that he had been playing with Spain since youth levels, so I wished him the best, especially for his honesty and sincerity with me throughout the process,' the Atlas Lions' tactician reflected.
Regragui praised the young player's directness throughout the process. 'We tried everything with the project we have with Morocco, with the African Cup in our country, with the 2030 World Cup, with all the affection the country could give to Lamine. But the boy never lied. He didn't play games about being Moroccan or Spanish.'
'Every Moroccan told me about Lamine,' Regragui added. 'They said 'there's a star at Barça and the priority for Morocco is to bring him.' We did everything, but he made his choice, so good luck. That's football.'
'I want to win the African Cup, the country deserves it'
During the same interview with Josep Pedrerol, Regragui outlined his ambitions for Morocco's upcoming tournaments. 'I want to win the Africa Cup, the country deserves it. The passion for sport is incredible. There isn't a day when a Moroccan doesn't ask me to win,' he declared.
The man behind Morocco's World Cup run also addressed his future with the national team. 'I have a contract until the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but in this job if you don't win, decisions come quickly,' he acknowledged.
Since taking the helm, the coach has maintained a consistent winning rhythm, with Morocco remaining undefeated in official matches since June 2023. The team has suffered only one defeat in their last 20 encounters, building solid momentum ahead of their upcoming tournaments.
When questioned about playing style, Regragui offered his philosophy: 'Playing well means being decisive in the final 30 meters and having possession, but always with the opponent's goal in mind.' He added, 'In football, as in all other sports, what fans want is to win.'

Youssef En-Nesyri Linked With Move to Aston Villa

Youssef En-Nesyri could be on the move again this summer, with Aston Villa among the clubs reportedly interested in signing the Fenerbahçe striker. The Moroccan international only joined the Turkish side last summer from Sevilla for a club-record fee of €19.5 million. He went on to score 30 goals in all competitions in his first season, including 20 in the Super Lig, six in the Europa League and four in the Turkish Cup. Despite his goal tally, En-Nesyri has faced growing frustration from sections of the Fenerbahçe fanbase, with the 26-year-old even booed in recent matches. According to reports in Turkiye, the forward is not keen to stay in Istanbul and is open to a move away. Fenerbahçe received offers for the striker during the January window but opted to delay any decision until the end of the season. With the summer transfer window now open, the club is expected to revisit those discussions. Aston Villa have been named as a serious contender for his signature. The Premier League side are reportedly preparing a €20 million bid. Villa's sporting director Monchi, previously worked with En-Nesyri at Sevilla and is understood to be keen on a reunion. En-Nesyri played 52 matches for Fenerbahçe this season and added seven assists to his 30 goals. He scored in the final league game of the season against Konyaspor, capping off a campaign that saw him rise to fourth in the club's all-time single-season scoring charts. Only Enner Valencia, Aykut Kocaman and Tanju Çolak have recorded more goals in a campaign for the club. Fenerbahçe finished the season empty-handed, missing out on the league title and domestic cups, and the lack of silverware has added to the uncertainty surrounding En-Nesyri's future. The club are believed to be open to offers and will weigh up any bids against their investment. Tags: Aston VillaFenerbahceSevillaYoussef En-Nesyri

Moroccan Trio Shortlisted for Golden Boy 2025

The race for the 2025 Golden Boy award is well underway, and three young Moroccan players have made the first cut in the 100-man shortlist. Eliesse Ben Seghir and Chemsdine Talbi, both full Morocco internationals, are joined by Franco-Moroccan prospect Ayyoub Bouaddi as nominees for the prestigious award, which recognizes the best under-21 player in Europe each year. Ben Seghir, 20, enjoyed a solid season with AS Monaco, scoring nine goals and providing four assists. Talbi, also 20, has been a standout performer for Club Brugge in Belgium. With seven goals and four assists to his name, including key contributions in the Champions League, he's now attracting interest from bigger clubs across the continent, notably German side RB Leipzig. Bouaddi is the youngest of the Moroccan trio. The 17-year-old midfielder has already broken into the first team at Lille and drew widespread attention after running the show in a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage. He hasn't committed to Morocco or France at the international level just yet. While the Moroccan players are turning heads, it's Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsí who currently leads the pack. The 18-year-old has had a breakout season, making 56 appearances across all competitions and helping Barça to a domestic treble under Hansi Flick. His calmness on the ball and defensive maturity have earned him a rating of 95.4 in the Football Benchmark index, putting him at the top of the official rankings. Lamine Yamal, last year's winner, sits at number one on the list with a score of 97.7, but since no player can win the award twice, his name is only there for reference. Paris Saint-Germain's Désiré Doué ranks third and is another strong candidate after a superb season, after winning the Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the UEFA Champions League. The shortlist was published this week by Tuttosport , the Italian outlet that created the Golden Boy award back in 2003. The final winner will be announced in December. How Much Would Yamal Earn After New Record-Breaking Deal?

Barcelona have tied Lamine Yamal to a new long-term contract that runs until 2031, locking in one of the brightest young stars in world football. The 17-year-old winger has been a standout this season, scoring 18 goals and providing 21 assists as Barça won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey under Hansi Flick. Now, the club have moved quickly to reward his performances. According to The Athletic , the new deal includes a base salary of around €10 million per year and a €25 million signing bonus. If Yamal hits all his performance targets, his total earnings could reach €40 million per year before tax. That would make him the highest-paid player at the club, ahead of veterans like Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong. The contract also includes a clause for a salary review in two years, allowing the club and the player to revisit the terms based on performance and progression. Yamal's contract was finalized just before the start of his summer break. His agent, Jorge Mendes, flew in twice over the past few weeks to wrap things up quickly, allowing the teenager to head into the off-season without transfer rumours hanging over him. Despite his rapid rise, Yamal has remained calm under pressure. Ahead of the Champions League semi-final against Inter, he said, 'Fear while playing? I left all my fears in the park of my neighbourhood, back in Mataró.' Barcelona sporting director Deco described the new deal as the club's best move of the summer. 'He's a special player,' he told local radio. 'He deserves special treatment.' Yamal's camp didn't explicitly demand he become the top earner, but the message was clear. After a season like this, he has become one of the biggest difference-makers in the squad. The deal was structured to fit within La Liga's financial regulations, and Yamal's status as a La Masia graduate made registration smoother. Tags: FC Barcelonalaligalamine yamal
