Ex-Man Utd ace admits 'Newcastle phone call' amid £50m summer transfer talk
Newcastle United are interested in Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga and the former Manchester United ace has spoken about the interest he has been subject to on international duty Anthony Elanga admitted he'd received a phone call from Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak... but joked it was concerning his errant shooting on international duty. The Nottingham Forest winger had been linked with interest from the Magpies ahead of Sweden's match against Hungary. The Swedes came away 2-0 victors without the help of Newcastle star Isak, who pulled out of the squad through injury, as Elanga put in a starring performance but failed to get on the scoresheet. Benjamin Nygren and Yasin Ayari secured the victory for Jon Dahl Tomasson's team away from home. Elanga scored six goals and provided 11 assists as Nottingham Forest qualified for the UEFA Conference League, after looking set for Champions League competition following a strong start to the season. The former Manchester United ace was a key member of Nuno Espirito Santo's team throughout 2024/25 in his second season with the club. Newcastle are said to have enquired over a deal for Elanga, who has three years remaining on his contract with Forest. Last summer saw the Premier League's fifth-placed side make a late £35million bid for the Swede but never came close to making a deal. And Eddie Howe appears keen to rest the Midlands side's resolve once again, with Newcastle able to offer Champions League football. However, it is reported it would take a figure greater than £50m to find success. Elanga appears relaxed over such speculation. ' There is a lot of talk," he said, per Sport Witness. "I focus on what I can do and my focus today was on the match. In football there are always rumours. The most important thing is that I focus on what I can control.' 'I guess there will always be scouts wherever I play," he added. "As long as I stay focused and do my best in the match. "I just keep my focus and what I can control. That's what I can do on and off the field. I focus on the next day and action. That's what I can do." Elanga was asked if he'd received a call from Isak and admitted his international team-mate had made an attempt. But joked it was likely about his shooting performance on Friday night. "He must have tried to call me about the match, that I should have scored," he said.

Nottingham Forest 0-2 Man City: Pep Guardiola's side back in FA Cup final after easing to Wembley win
Manchester City reached the FA Cup for a third successive season after they eased to a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Wembley. Pep Guardiola's side took the lead inside two minutes to quickly establish control of the semi-final clash, as Rico Lewis took the ball on the edge of the area and drilled a finish into the bottom corner. Forest barely laid a glove on City in the first-half but could have equalised seconds after the break when Anthony Elanga, a half-time change, found himself free in the box but could not hit the target. Josko Gvardiol doubled the lead with a header from a corner, leaving Forest with a mountain to climb, and they had little luck in their attempts to do so. Morgan Gibbs-White smashed a stunning volley against the bar and was then denied by the post from a tight angle, before Taiwo Awoniyi also found the upright in his way as he reacted quickly to a rebound. Forest could not get the goal to set up a grandstand finish, as City booked their return to Wembley next month and a familiar stage, when they will take on Crystal Palace in the final. Nuno Espirito Santo's side have enjoyed a superb season and came into this match with the confidence of having beaten City when these sides met in March, but they made the worst possible start. Mateo Kovacic, who was named player of the match, strolled forward and played a wonderful pass between the lines to Lewis, who was allowed to turn and made no mistake in arrowing a strike beyond Matz Sels. Much has been made of Forest's low possession stats but that was taken to the extreme here, as they were camped deep in their own territory and struggled to get any sort of foothold in the match in a passive first-half display. Elanga's introduction at half-time showed Nuno had not been impressed what what he had seen and the winger should have had an instant impact. Callum Hudson-Odoi was set free down the left, he rolled a low cross into the middle and Elanga, completely free, fired wide. Kovacic's deflected strike was hooked away on the line by Sels before City did then punish Elanga and Forest for that crucial miss. It was a frustratingly simple goal from the perspective of those in red, a corner swung to the back post and Gvardiol allowed to rise highest to nod in. To their credit, Forest did everything but score as they desperately pushed for a way back into the match. Gibbs-White could not have hit his volley any sweeter, but saw it crash against the bar, and he then went round Stefan Ortega to leave an open goal but could only hit the far post from a tight angle. Awoniyi made it a hat-trick against the woodwork, when the ball fell to him in the box and his effort bounced off the post, and Gibbs-White's header was then kept out by Ortega at full stretch. City saw out the rest of the match in relatively comfortable fashion, as they look to end a frustrating campaign with some silverware. For Forest, it could still prove to be an historic campaign, with Champions League football within touching distance.

PFA want game's lawmakers to learn lessons from Taiwo Awoniyi injury
The Nigerian was placed in an induced coma to aid his recovery from urgent abdominal surgery after he collided with a post in his side's draw with Leicester on Sunday. The injury occurred after assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis delayed raising an offside flag against Awoniyi's team-mate Anthony Elanga. The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday's match against Leicester City. Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate. — Nottingham Forest (@NFFC) May 13, 2025 The Premier League website states that in line with VAR protocols which apply worldwide, assistants should keep the flag down where there is a 'clear opportunity to score or very obvious attacking phase and tight judgement for onside/offside'. Another Forest player, Ola Aina, insists the flag should have gone up straight away against Elanga, and told the Daily Mail he felt Elanga was 'miles offside'. Now, Awoniyi's union, the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), could seek observations from the body which governs football's laws, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), as well as the English game's referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to discuss whether the current rules on delaying flags create issues for players. The union's priority is understood to be Awoniyi's health and recovery at this stage, but when the time is right it intends to speak to all the stakeholders involved in the incident, including the club and the player. The PFA will ask for observations and look at whether any lessons need to be learned. The PA news agency understands it is also likely, in light of the incident, that the IFAB will give consideration to whether there is a need to review the VAR protocol and guidelines. The existing protocol is the result of extensive input from the football world. Prior to VAR's introduction there was much frustration with players being flagged for offside when they were through on goal, and replays later showed they were not actually offside. Allowing play to continue clearly creates the potential for an injury to the attacker or the goalkeeper, and the protocol tries to strike a balance by stating that if a player is clearly offside then the flag should still go up, but where it is not clear, for fairness, the play continues.
