Ex-Man Utd ace admits 'Newcastle phone call' amid £50m summer transfer talk
Newcastle United are interested in Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga and the former Manchester United ace has spoken about the interest he has been subject to on international duty
Anthony Elanga admitted he'd received a phone call from Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak... but joked it was concerning his errant shooting on international duty. The Nottingham Forest winger had been linked with interest from the Magpies ahead of Sweden's match against Hungary.
The Swedes came away 2-0 victors without the help of Newcastle star Isak, who pulled out of the squad through injury, as Elanga put in a starring performance but failed to get on the scoresheet. Benjamin Nygren and Yasin Ayari secured the victory for Jon Dahl Tomasson's team away from home.
Elanga scored six goals and provided 11 assists as Nottingham Forest qualified for the UEFA Conference League, after looking set for Champions League competition following a strong start to the season. The former Manchester United ace was a key member of Nuno Espirito Santo's team throughout 2024/25 in his second season with the club.
Newcastle are said to have enquired over a deal for Elanga, who has three years remaining on his contract with Forest. Last summer saw the Premier League's fifth-placed side make a late £35million bid for the Swede but never came close to making a deal.
And Eddie Howe appears keen to rest the Midlands side's resolve once again, with Newcastle able to offer Champions League football. However, it is reported it would take a figure greater than £50m to find success.
Elanga appears relaxed over such speculation. ' There is a lot of talk," he said, per Sport Witness.
"I focus on what I can do and my focus today was on the match. In football there are always rumours. The most important thing is that I focus on what I can control.'
'I guess there will always be scouts wherever I play," he added. "As long as I stay focused and do my best in the match.
"I just keep my focus and what I can control. That's what I can do on and off the field. I focus on the next day and action. That's what I can do."
Elanga was asked if he'd received a call from Isak and admitted his international team-mate had made an attempt. But joked it was likely about his shooting performance on Friday night.
"He must have tried to call me about the match, that I should have scored," he said.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank wants Tottenham job and has already made 1st demand
Thomas Frank is keen to become the next Tottenham manager and wants them to rival Manchester United for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo - who is likely to be on the move Brentford boss Thomas Frank has told his club that he wants to move on to take up the vacancy at Tottenham - who have made the Dane their No 1 target after sacking Ange Postecoglou. Daniel Levy axed the Australian on Friday and has wasted no time in going after his successor. Frank has performed impressively over in west London, guiding the Bees from the Championship to the Premier League before establishing them as a top flight club. He is now ready for his next challenge and sees the Tottenham job as the ideal opportunity. Talks have already begun about moving across the capital, but Frank has made it clear he wants to bring one of his leading lights with him. Bryan Mbeumo is linked with a £60million switch to Manchester United, who have now submitted two bids for the Cameroon frontman, but Frank wants Tottenham to swoop in and win the race for his signature. It would be a statement of intent from the Danish manager, who can use the lure of Champions League football in negotiations. Mbeumo has just enjoyed his best season to date in front of goal and is expected to move on. Tottenham's failure to replace Ange Postecoglou has already seen them miss out on two midfielders and now they want to get a deal for the Aussie's successor in place to avoid missing out on further targets. The Bees head coach is thought to have a good relationship with Spurs technical director and compatriot Johan Lange, who is expected to remain at the club. Spurs have already missed out in the market with England international Angel Gomes, a player Tottenham had been pursuing, choosing to join Marseille on a free transfer once he left Lille. Meanwhile, Real Betis' American star Johnny Cardoso has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, providing a deal can be struck. Tottenham did have an option to land Cardoso but he wasn't willing to wait around whilst the north Londoners mulled over their options. Frank will be tasked with improving on Tottenham's worst ever Premier League showing. Their European form covered for poor domestic results and they became the first club to lose 22 times but avoid relegation such was their decline.

Sadio Mane hit with bombshell decision after requesting to miss England fixture
Sadio Mane has been told that his Al-Nassr days are numbered as they eye new transfers with the Senegal icon also asking to skip his country's game with England are heavy criticism Al-Nassr have told former Liverpool star Sadio Mane that he can leave the club this summer as they look to bring a top class replacement to Saudi Arabia. It continues Mane's torrid time since leaving Anfield, which he did after they lost the Champions League final in 2022. He was a star with the Reds, forming one of Europe's most fearsome attacks, but has been unable to continue that form since leaving English shores. A move to Bayern Munich last just a season and now Al-Nassr, where he's played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, have told him he can seek pastures new after two seasons in the Middle East. There are rules over how many foreign players can be in a team and the Saudi outfit have set their sights on Alejandro Garnacho. The Manchester United star has struggled to convince Ruben Amorim, who has left him on the bench for key games, and a move away from Old Trafford is being discussed and could ultimately suit all parties. Mane's former Liverpool team-mate Luis Diaz was also seen as an option, but Arne Slot claims he wants to retain the player. That is despite the Colombian admitting he's not held contract talks with those at Anfield as he considers his next move. READ MORE: Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo in war of words over the Ballon d'Or It could all leave the Senegal icon looking for a new home and he's copping it on the international stage too - so much so that he's asked to sit out his country's upcoming game against England. The Three Lions will host the African nation at the City Ground in Nottingham in a matter of days. Mane asked to be left out of Senegal's showpiece friendly against England after being targeted by critics and trolls over his recent performances for the African country. The 33-year-old was gutted to be singled out for widespread stick after the two World Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Togo in March. His request to miss Friday night's clash against the Republic of Ireland and the meeting with England and cited 'personal reasons', which were reluctantly accepted by coach Pape Thiaw. Thiaw said: 'It is a personal decision that belongs to Mane - and I respect it as a coach. Sadio is a very important player for us. But I don't coach one player, I coach 26 players, and so the most important thing is the collective. I have put together a squad of players who are available and ready to fight with pride for the national jersey.'

PLAY TEAMSHEET: Can YOU name the Arsenal team that beat Sunderland 2-0 in 2017? Or pick YOUR team and guess their starting XI
Welcome back to Teamsheet... Mail Sport's original football memory game with a twist that gives you the chance to test your football knowledge against your mates. Back in 2017, Arsenal were at a slight wit's end but hunting a Champions League spot. Though they eventually missed out, they made sure the race went to the final day by beating Sunderland 2-0. The Black Cats themselves finished rock bottom, but can now look forward to a return to the top flight after winning this year's Championship play-offs. We, though, want to know if you can name the Arsenal side that Arsene Wenger named on that day in 2017. It's just for fun, so see how you fare and share your Teamsheet score... full instructions on how to play are at the bottom of the article and in the game itself. And you can also pick any team you like and guess their starting XI. Best of luck! HOW TO PLAY The aim of the game is to score as few points as possible! If you guess a player at the first attempt you score one point - so the lowest score for guessing every player at the first attempt is 11. Guess a correct letter in the right position, and it'll turn green. Guess a correct letter but in the wrong position, and it'll turn yellow. You have six guesses for each player - and if you fail, we'll reveal their identity for 11 points! You can also ask for a free letter, but it costs you a point. So play on to see if you'll score the best possible total of 11 - or fail on every player and score 121.
