Gamers shocked as Elder Scrolls IV revealed and launched on same day

Video game studio Bethesda has announced the long-rumoured launch of a remastered version of its 2006 hit Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The fourth instalment of the series has maintained a cult following among fans despite it being almost two decades since its original release. Now, gamers have been surprised as a remaster of the classic game has not only been announced - but released to digital stores immediately. It comes as fans await the next game in the series, with the most recent entry - Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - having been released in 2011. More than 600,000 people watched the live announcement on YouTube. And the reveal that the game would be available immediately drew shock and excitement from those watching, with many viewers writing "Praise be Todd" in the comments - in reference to Bethesda director Todd Howard. In 2006, Oblivion launched on PC and the Xbox 360 console as the product of a co-publishing agreement between Bethesda and Take-Two Interactive's label, 2K Games. "Oblivion was a really defining moment in the series," Howard said in the announcement. "I think with a remaster, we want people to feel the way they did then - but it's still a game of its time, you want to keep the bones in place," he said. Bethesda showed off a series of significant graphics upgrades in its launch video, with updated gameplay, user interface and audio systems. Players will also be able to upgrade their characters in a new way, combining systems both from the original and the sequel. One of the developers called the remaster "a love letter" to the original game. Set in the open world of Tamriel, the game places players in an empire on the verge of downfall - after the mysterious death of Emperor Uriel Septim VII leaves behind a vacant throne and missing heir. Rachel Howie, a content creator and Twitch partner, said the game was "long overdue the currently very trendy remaster treatment". "It's such a great opportunity for the generation who grew up thinking Skyrim was peak role-playing game to meet its charming little brother," she added. Oblivion racked up 9.5m sales according to gaming website Polygon, and is fondly remembered by fans. Skyrim then released five years later to a massive response, selling more than 40 million copies across generations of consoles - it has been re-released on two generations of consoles since it first came out. The news will now leave fans wondering if they may now soon see some news about Elder Scrolls 6, which was announced in 2018, some seven years after Skyrim's release. Since then, information on the game has been sparse, and mostly limited to rumours. But gamers have come to expect a long wait from Bethesda, which is facing demand for a new Fallout game as well - which remains under wraps despite the success of a hit Amazon TV show based on the series.

‘The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' Remaster Is Live, Free On Xbox Game Pass

Oblivion Bethesda At long last, Bethesda and Microsoft finally decided that they would debut the most-leaked project in the industry and do so without moving the release window that everyone was reporting. And yes, it's out now. After a stream showing off the remade Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remaster (not classified as a remake, apparently) with its absurdly amazing new graphics and features, it was announced that the game was launching today, as previously predicted, as a 'shadow drop,' the likes of which Microsoft has done before with games like Hi-Fi Rush (one of the great tragedies of our time, given what happened to its studio). The Oblivion remaster was made by Virtuous, not Bethesda pulling off devs to work on it as opposed to the eternally gestating Elder Scrolls VI, where as you may expect, there was not any news about that project in this stream today other than a quick mention. Rather, the focus is on this remaster which is far above and beyond what we've seen for practically any other game, at least nothing this old. It's genuinely amazing to behold, and this should grab a large numbers of new and old players alike. 600,000 people were watching this reveal stream alone. Oblivion Bethesda Despite being a hushed release until today (minus the leaks), the Oblivion remaster, if it's as good as it looks, may prove to be one of the bigger games of the year, given the impact the original had and how popular the franchise remains (as a decade of Skyrim demonstrates). Sure, even if some aspects are dated despite being a remake, this seems like it will have a wide audience. And a wide audience that includes, you guessed it, Xbox Game Pass players able to get the Oblivion remake as a part of their subscription. It looks solid, better than almost any remake I've seen in a long while. Getting your hands on it is another thing, and it will cost you a good chunk of hard drive space (120 GB) and $50 if you're not on Game Pass (it is also on PS5 and Steam). But at the time of this writing, I already paid for it because well, of course I was going to. I will report back with my own thoughts on the remake once I get a little ways into it. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's Supposed Remaster Details Revealed Tomorrow

Bethesda seemingly has a new version of its seminal RPG, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion coming for fans. After months of rumors, the publisher is streaming reveals and details at 11 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. PT tomorrow, April 22. Bethesda didn't release any details, just a day-before invite to watch the stream. Whether it's just graphically updated or will have substantial reworks of its systems to appeal to today's gamers is anyone's guess until the reveal stream, which is happening on Bethesda's YouTube and Twitch channels. Bethesda's last big RPG release, Starfield, was a muted success as players explored a galaxy chock full of story, but were less enthused about the procedurally-generated outposts and planets that became repetitive. Returning to a beloved game like Oblivion could be a safer bet for Bethesda. Oblivion's remake would join several well-regarded releases in the last few years that have re-envisioned classic games for modern gamers. Last year's Silent Hill 2 Remake was a critical and commercial success, while 2023's Resident Evil 4 Remake was similarly well-received by fans. Originally released in 2007, Oblivion followed the classic Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and building on its open-world design. While beloved, the game's introduction of level-scaling -- making enemies proportionately difficult as your character grows -- proved controversial. Still, the game's story remains one of the most well-regarded in the series.
