ESO Developers Are Working On ‘Underlying Tech' For Possible Crossplay
Elder Scrolls Online Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is over a decade old at this point and remains to be one of the most popular and widely played MMORPGs on the market across PC/Mac, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. However, one major caveat that holds it back from being even bigger is the complete lack of crossplay and cross-progression. That means if you want to play Elder Scrolls Online with your friends, you must be on the same platform ecosystem as them to make it happen. PC players cannot play with PlayStation players, who cannot play with Xbox players, and so on. That also goes for your own accounts as well. If you're playing on PC and then a friend starts playing on Xbox, you can't use the same character at all. During a podcast recording with Greg Miller's Kinda Funny, as reported by PCGamesN, Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) game director Rich Lambert and ZeniMax Online Studios head Matt Firor talk about the studio's plans for the game's future. Of course, one of the biggest questions posed is whether or not crossplay is ever coming. "Anything is possible," says Lambert. "We're working on doing some underlying tech changes that would make it possible," adds Firor. 'We know how important it is. Hopefully, a remedy is finally on the way in the form of crossplay. Over six years ago, I wrote about ESO's lack of crossplay and now we live in an era where games like New World, Throne and Liberty, and the upcoming Chrono Odyssey all have crossplay as a core part of their marketing appeal. For all intents and purposes, Elder Scrolls Online is getting left behind in this regard. In the meantime, there's a lot to look forward to for the rest of this year with ESO. In June, the Return of the Worm Cult kicks off as a continuation of the original main storyline alongside more Content Pass changes and the introduction of subclassing, which will dramatically change the way players build out their characters. For a decade-old MMO, those are some pretty massive, sweeping changes so it's great to see the folks at ZeniMax Online Studios willing to take big risks with ESO even though they could have chosen to continue playing it safe.

Elder Scrolls Online Subclassing Looks Ridiculously Flexible And Fun
Elder Scrolls Online Subclassing Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has always had a relatively flexible class system ever since it launched over a decade ago. For many years now you've been able to build any of the game's classes to fit into any role on a team whether it be damage-focused, tanking, or healing, with a variety of build options. But now, with the debut of the upcoming subclassing system in Update 46 (June 2 for PC/Mac and June 18 for Xbox and PlayStation,) those options are about to explode to offer a ludicrous amount of flexibility far beyond what's already in the game. Currently, when you make a character in Elder Scrolls Online, you must pick a single class and you're stuck with that class forever. If you want to try something else, you'll need to go make a fresh character and start over. That's kind of a bummer for a game that is otherwise very generous about letting you change everything from your name, looks, faction, or even race. With subclassing, you'll have more flexibility and opportunity than ever to really build your character your way by combining up to three different skill trees across all classes onto a single bar. That's 21 different skill trees of several skills each. As the featured image at the top implies, that means you could create an all-out summoner build that utilizes pets from the Necromancer, Sorcerer, and Warden skill trees all combined together. That's wild. There is one small caveat though: to unlock subclassing, you'll need to have at least one character at level 50. Once you reach that milestone, there is a short side quest to ramp you up into the system and then you've got access to the whole feature. 'Players who have played on multiple classes and characters will also need to think about these skill lines, and how they might be combined, totally differently than they have for the last 11 years.' Subclassing in Elder Scrolls Online With over 3,000 different combinations, I'd definitely say they've accomplished their goal with this new feature. With the Content Pass structure, Elder Scrolls Online is due to get some massive updates for the rest of this year. Subclassing and Part 1 of the Worm Cult storyline kick off in June, with another dungeon pack on the way in a few months, followed by the Writhing Wall Event which is described as a 'world changing in-game event' for all players. Then Part 2 of the Worm Cult story closes out the year, so it'll be a very busy next six months for ESO.

New ‘Elder Scrolls Online' Content Pass Introduces Much-Needed Changes
Elder Scrolls Online ZeniMax Online The Elder Scrolls Online celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024. That's a huge milestone for any online-only live game these days. Even though it isn't cross-play, you can play Elder Scrolls Online on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5 with each platform occupying its own server branch, which is a pretty wide range of platforms. And now, after years of the exact same update cycle like clockwork, Bethesda is finally shaking things up for its Elder Scrolls MMO with a new Content Pass structure. I've been waiting for some sort of big change to hit the world of Tamriel for quite some time. And even though a sweeping change to how you release new content isn't exactly what I had in mind, it's still a big enough revamp to turn my head. Up until now, ESO had a very predictable cadence. You'd get two new dungeons, then a large premium expansion pack usually with a new zone and other content, followed by two more dungeons, and then the year would cap off with a smaller content release to bridge the gap to the next year. It was a good format, but it just got very tedious and it felt like you were being nickel and dimed constantly. What happened for me is that everything started to feel the same. It was a never-ending treadmill of content that had the same cadence, tone, and general vibe in such a way that the entire game felt like constant revisions on itself without anything truly new being added. Over the years some updates would inject something exciting and different, like when they added the companion system, but it's been a while since ESO really intrigued me with something fresh. Hopefully the Content Pass structure will change that. Elder Scrolls Online ZeniMax Online Conceptually, this new format should offer similar levels of depth and breadth, but will spread things out a bit more evenly across the year as a whole with a single upfront purchase. For starters, the first big two-part storyline kicking off in June is called Cult of the Wyrm. It's actually a direct sequel to the original game's base storyline—which is pretty interesting for an MMO that's mostly been focused on side stories and lore expansion for a decade. This is particularly exciting for hardcore Elder Scrolls fans because it brings back Molag Bal as the main villain and sends players to a never-before-seen region south of the main continent called the Isle of Solstice. The most appealing part of this, for me, is how it's expected to conclude at the end of the season. The second phase of the Culty of the Wyrm storyline will task players across the entire server to collaborate on constructing a powerful weapon to destroy the barrier surrounding the new island region. Once completed, it will totally transform the zone and continue the main storyline once more. I love sweeping, game-changing events like this in MMOs because it's a uniquely live game feature that you have to experience firsthand when it happens. I'm reminded of World of Warcraft's Cataclysm, or when Lion's Arch in Guild Wars 2 was destroyed during the Living Story. Another one of the more exciting new features is Cyrodiil Champions, a massive-scale PvP mode that will introduce balanced matchmaking to help level the playing field. Taking notes from their past successes, the team at ZeniMax Online is aiming to revamp and overhaul early game zones and the new player tutorial as well. Elder Scrolls Online ZeniMax Online Finally, and perhaps most interesting from a gameplay-wide perspective, Elder Scrolls Online will also be getting a new subclass feature that kicks in at the soft level cap of 50. This will enable characters to unlock skills from non-primary classes, unlocking up to 3,000 different combinations in total. That should really help differentiate playstyles and introduce a ton of new build variety. All in all, the Content Pass for Elder Scrolls Online will include the new two-part Cult of the Wyrm storyline and world-scale co-op event, two new dungeon packs, and the brand-new zone to explore.
