Gunfire at party in Carthage leaves 1 person dead, 1 in custody
CARTHAGE, Mo. — A 22-year-old man is dead and a Joplin man is facing a charge of second-degree murder after a party in north Carthage turned into a fight that ended with gunshots. Police on Monday identified the victim as Johny Reyes-Garcia, 22, of Carthage. Jasper County Prosecutor Theresa Kenney told the Globe on Monday that her office filed one count of second-degree murder Sunday against Elijah Hardee, 19, of Joplin, for the shooting. Bond was set at $1 million. Hardee was being held Monday in the Cherokee County Jail in Columbus, Kansas, awaiting extradition to Jasper County. Carthage police Chief Bill Hawkins said police received a call about 11:30 p.m. Saturday of a disturbance involving a weapon in the 300 block of West Vine Street. In a Facebook post on the Carthage Police Department page, a written statement said a 22-year-old man was found at the scene with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to Mercy Carthage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 'Apparently there were multiple fights at the scene,' Hawkins said. 'It was a party, people got out of control and multiple fights happened to the point where somebody got shot.' Hawkins said the fights took place outside of a home and that there was at least one gunshot fired and possibly two. During the investigation, a suspect was identified and officers tracked him to a home in Galena, Kansas, where he was arrested without incident. The Galena Police Department on its Facebook page said it received a request for assistance from the Carthage Police Department in regard to the homicide. 'It was believed that the suspect from this homicide was at a residence in Galena,' Galena police said. 'Surveillance of the residence was conducted by members of the Galena Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. At approximately 9:43 a.m. (Sunday) the suspect was observed standing on the front porch of the residence. The suspect, Elijah Hardee of Joplin, exited the residence and was contacted on the front porch. Hardee was taken into custody without incident.'
