Dells, EPJ, Winner-Colome, DV advance to semifinals
BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — The Class 'B' baseball state tournament began Monday with the quarterfinals, which featured two extra-inning games.
Top-seed Dell Rapids opened the tournament with an 8-2 victory over Sioux Valley. The Quarriers scored in five of the six innings they batted, including three runs in the first inning.
The second game of the day saw Elk Point-Jefferson prevail 7-3 over Sioux Falls Christian. The Huskies led 2-1 after one inning and then exploded for five runs in the fifth.
Winner-Colome claimed a 3-2 walk-off win over Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake in nine innings on Landon Calhoon's solo home run. He also tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extras with an RBI single.
Dakota Valley secured a 4-2 nine-inning victory over Madison/Chester in the final game of the day. The Panthers opened the scoring with two runs in the fifth. The Bulldogs tied it with a pair in the seventh to extend the game before DV scored two in the top of the ninth.
The semifinals and championship are Tuesday. Dell Rapids meets Elk Point-Jefferson in the first semifinal, and Winner-Colome and Dakota Valley tangle in the second contest. The championship game is set for 5 p.m.
