A Big Bold Beautiful Journey Release Date Delayed for Margot Robbie Romance Drama
has shifted its release date as Sony Pictures updates its theatrical schedule. Initially slated for spring, the film will now debut in the fall. The move positions it alongside Universal's Him and 20th Century Studios' Ella McCay. Meanwhile, the spring release calendar sees fewer major studio-wide openings, reshaping the box office landscape. Sony Pictures has rescheduled the release of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey from May 9, 2025, to September 19, 2025. Kogonada directs A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, featuring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. Sony previously scheduled the film to compete against Thunderbolts* in its second weekend but has now moved its release to open alongside Universal's Him and 20th Century Studios' Ella McCay. The supporting cast features Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Hamish Linklater. The film is described as 'an imaginative tale of two strangers and the extraordinary emotional journey that connects them.' It is written by Seth Reiss, known for The Menu, and produced by Imperative Entertainment's Bradley Thomas and Ryan Friedkin, along with Reiss and Youree Henley. Sony Pictures acquired the film in February 2024 at the European Film Market in Berlin. The move leaves May 9 without a major studio-wide release. The only scheduled films for that date include IFC's Clown in a Cornfield, Vertical Entertainment's Fight or Flight, and Briarcliff Entertainment's Juliet and Romeo. Sources indicate Sony adjusted the release date to position the film in a marketplace where a female-led movie could stand out, as per Variety. Kogonada directed After Yang before reuniting with Farrell for this project. Robbie last appeared in Asteroid City and Barbie in 2023. Farrell featured in HBO's The Penguin and The Banshees of Inisherin. 30West financed A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, and Sony Pictures is handling global distribution. Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell Romance ‘A Big Beautiful Journey' Pushes to Fall
'A Big Beautiful Journey' is taking a journey of its own. The Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell-led drama, which was originally dated for a May 9 release, is moving to September 19. This will make the film a key bit of counterprogramming in the horror-heavy pre-Halloween corridor. The date change will also give Sony time to make it a true female event movie, something they have experience with ('It Ends With Us' made over $350 million worldwide). The movie is described as 'an original tale of two strangers and the extraordinary emotional journey that connects them.' 'A Big Beautiful Journey' was directed by Kogonada ('After Yang') and was written by Seth Reiss. It was produced by Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Ryan Friedkin, Reiss and Youree Henley. Kogonada, Ilene Feldman and Ori Eisen serve as executive producers. The supporting cast includes Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Hamish Linklater. On September 19, 'A Big Beautiful Journey' will now face off against Universal's Jordan Peele-produced horror movie 'Him' and Disney's 'Ella McCay,' from James L. Brooks. Disney Dates Sam Raimi's "Send Help", Moves "Elio" Back a Week
Yara Sameh Disney pushed the opening of 'Elio,' the studio's upcoming Pixar movie, by a week, while unveiling the release dates of Sam Raimi's 'Send Help' and James L. Brooks' 'Ella McCay.' 'Elio,' an animated science fiction adventure film, will debut on June 20. It was originally slated to open on June 13. This means it will no longer go head-to-head with Universal and DreamWorks' live-action remake of 'How to Train Your Dragon,' which could have cannibalized its core audience of kids and families. In its new date, it will face off against Sony's '28 Years Later,' a zombie thriller that is pitched at older moviegoers. Those are also the crowds that will be turning up for 'Send Help' and 'Ella McCay,' both of which will be released by 20th Century Studios. 'Send Help,' a horror film with Rachel McAdams, Chris Pang, Dylan O'Brien, and Dennis Haysbert, will open on Jan. 30. Its competition is 'Aang: The Last Airbender,' an animated Paramount movie. 'Send Help' finds Raimi back in genre mode after making big-budget films like 'Spider-Man' and 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.' It is about a woman who is stranded on a remote island with her boss after a plane crash and their struggles to stay alive. 'Ella McCay,' which marks Brooks' return to the director's chair after 2010's disastrous 'How Do You Know,' is getting a prime fall release, which could signal it wants awards attention. It will be released on September 19. Brooks, an Oscar-winner who made classics like 'As Good as It Gets,' 'Broadcast News' and 'Terms of Endearment,' also wrote the script for the comedy. It stars Emma Mackey as the title character, with an ensemble that includes Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri, Kumail Nanjiani, Jack Lowden, Rebecca Hall, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Albert Brooks. The movie revolves around a young politician who becomes governor and her struggles to balance her career with her family life.
