'Until Dawn': Another video game adaptation fails to live up to its source material

At this point we know that video games adapted into TV shows or movies is difficult, and more frequently than not, they end in disappointment (unless, of course, we're talking about The Last of Us). For Until Dawn, fans of the game will certainly be left wanting more. Directed by David F. Sandberg, starring Ella Rubin, Odessa A'zion, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell and Peter Stormare, there's a lot of talent behind the movie. But Until Dawn can't seem to navigate the interesting puzzle elements of the game to craft a movie that's as compelling. Until Dawn release date: Now in theatresDirector: David F. SandbergCast: Ella Rubin, Odessa A'zion, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, Peter StormareRuntime: 103 minutes One year ago Clover's (Ella Rubin) sister Melanie (Maia Mitchell) left home and mysteriously disappeared. Clover has now recruited her friends to head to Glore Valley to investigate what possibly happened to Melanie. When they arrive at an manor, they face the threat of a masked killer. But as they're each killed, they realize they're stuck there and forced to die over and over again, until they figure out how to escape. What makes Until Dawn feel particularly sluggish is that there is such a promising setup. The concept of these characters dying over and over again opens up this world to so many different possibilities for shocking and entertaining deaths, but that potential is just never harnessed. Instead, the repeated deaths start to feel dull, featuring the most obvious options and horror topes, taking away that excitement from the story. It's not that the practical effects don't succeed in terms of the look, but the impact is lost with the way the narrative is crafted. In terms of our introduction to this world, it doesn't feel fleshed out enough to give us a solid foundation for these characters before we get to the horror elements of the story. Ji-young Yoo's Megan is probably the most interesting character of the bunch. She described herself as a clairvoyant and you feel her emotional journey more so than you do for even the lead character, Clover. While Until Dawn feels dull in its story, the production design is still impressively alluring, building the creepy setting in a way that adds to the suspense. To enjoy Until Dawn, it's best to not take things too seriously and not try to dissect every detail. It's more about enjoying the visuals and having a few laughs, with a light scare or two. There are a number of questions you'll likely have about why these horrors are even happen in the film, and the answers don't satisfy. Until Dawn is a fine horror film, but much of it feels like we're just grazing the surface of the subject matter, when something more robust seemed possible.

When Is Horror Thriller ‘Until Dawn' Coming To Streaming?

Ella Rubin in "Until Dawn." 'Until Dawn,' which is based on the hit PlayStations Studios video game, is new in theaters. How soon will it be before viewers can stream it at home? The summary for Until Dawn reads, 'One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover (Ella Rubin) and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one … only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. 'Trapped in the valley, they're forced to relive the night again and again — only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.' Rated R, Until Dawn also stars Michael Cimino, Odessa A'zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell and Peter Stormare. Currently, the only way you can watch Until Dawn is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes. The movie plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday. When Until Dawn debuts in the home entertainment marketplace, its first stop will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand. Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is distributing Until Dawn through its subsidiary Screen Gems, tends to have a consistent window of time between their films' premieres in theaters and the time they arrive on PVOD — which is anywhere between one month to six weeks. For example, Sony's horror thriller Heart Eyes opened in theaters on Feb. 7 and debuted on PVOD just under a month later, on March 4. Before that, the studio's Marvel antihero movie Kraven the Hunter debuted in theaters on Dec. 13, 2024, and arrived on PVOD on Jan. 14. However, it took a bit longer for two bigger Sony titles to reach PVOD. The romantic drama It Ends with Us opened in theaters on Aug. 9, 2024, and pivoted to PVOD about six weeks later, on Sept. 24, while the Marvel antihero adventure Venom: The Last Dance debuted on PVOD on Dec. 10, a bit over six weeks after its Oct. 25 release in theaters. If Until Dawn follows the same one-month to six-week release pattern, viewers can expect it to arrive on PVOD sometime between May 27 and June 10, since new movies generally arrive on digital streaming on Tuesdays. Since Netflix has a deal in place with Sony Pictures Entertainment to stream the studio's films first, Until Dawn will make its streaming video on demand debut on Netflix. Typically, it takes three to four months after a Sony film is released in theaters before it arrives on Netflix. For example, Heart Eyes will debut on SVOD on Netflix on May 8, just over three months after its Feb. 7 release. It Ends with Us, however, debuted on Netflix on Dec. 9, 2024, four months after it opened in theaters on Aug. 9. Additionally, Venom: The Last Dance arrived on Netflix on Feb. 25, four months after its Oct. 25, 2024, premiere in theaters. If Until Dawn follows the same release pattern, then viewers can expect the film to arrive on Netflix sometime between July 25 and Aug. 27. Directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!), Until Dawn plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.

‘Until Dawn' Reviews: Are Critics Creeped Out By Video Game Adaptation?

Ella Rubin in "Until Dawn." Until Dawn — the movie adaptation of the hit horror-themed PlayStation Studios video game — is new in theaters. How are critics reacting to the movie? Directed by Shazam! and Annabelle: Creation filmmaker David F. Sandberg, and written by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman, Until Dawn plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday. The official summary for Until Dawn reads, 'One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover (Ella Rubin) and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. As of Thursday, Until Dawn has received a 58% 'rotten' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 26 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus and Popcornmeter score, which is voted on by verified users of the site, are both pending. William Bibbiani is among the top critics on RT who gives Until Dawn a 'fresh' review, writing in The Wrap, 'If you're just looking for reasons to jump out of your seat, there are worse ways to spend your time. And a lot of better ways too.' Like Bibbiani, Alison Foreman of IndieWire has reservations about the video game-turn-movie but still gives it a 'fresh' review on RT, writing, 'Until Dawn makes countless gestures at being an incisive horror comedy — some good, some bad — but works better approached as a full-blown spoof. If that was the intent here, a better name might have been something like Video Game: The Horror Movie.' Benjamin Lee of The Guardian also gives the film a 'fresh' review even though it doesn't scream greatness. In Lee's review on RT, Lee writes, 'On its own, lower-stakes terms, Until Dawn is a passable, if rather unfrightening frightener, made with some skill and enlivened by a strong troupe of young actors.' Among the top critics on RT who give Until Dawn a 'rotten' review is Eric Piepenburg of The New York Times, who writes, 'Watching someone play a video game that they never let you play is a singular kind of boring. A similar 'Why am I here?' dullness arrives early and stays late in Until Dawn.' Another detractor of Until Dawn is Jacob Oller of AV Club, who writes in his 'rotten' review on RT, 'A misbegotten time loop tale where the story shifts at will to cram in as many clichés as possible.' Also giving Until Dawn a 'rotten' review on RT is Nick Schager, who writes in The Daily Beast that the movie 'lacks any sense of internal logic and is even lighter on surprising scares, dispensing only clichés that are as moldy as the haunted house in which his characters are confined.' Until Dawn plays in Thursday previews and opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
