'Until Dawn': Another video game adaptation fails to live up to its source material

Yahoo29-04-2025

At this point we know that video games adapted into TV shows or movies is difficult, and more frequently than not, they end in disappointment (unless, of course, we're talking about The Last of Us). For Until Dawn, fans of the game will certainly be left wanting more.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, starring Ella Rubin, Odessa A'zion, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell and Peter Stormare, there's a lot of talent behind the movie. But Until Dawn can't seem to navigate the interesting puzzle elements of the game to craft a movie that's as compelling.
Until Dawn release date: Now in theatresDirector: David F. SandbergCast: Ella Rubin, Odessa A'zion, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, Peter StormareRuntime: 103 minutes
One year ago Clover's (Ella Rubin) sister Melanie (Maia Mitchell) left home and mysteriously disappeared. Clover has now recruited her friends to head to Glore Valley to investigate what possibly happened to Melanie.
When they arrive at an manor, they face the threat of a masked killer.
But as they're each killed, they realize they're stuck there and forced to die over and over again, until they figure out how to escape.
What makes Until Dawn feel particularly sluggish is that there is such a promising setup. The concept of these characters dying over and over again opens up this world to so many different possibilities for shocking and entertaining deaths, but that potential is just never harnessed.
Instead, the repeated deaths start to feel dull, featuring the most obvious options and horror topes, taking away that excitement from the story.
It's not that the practical effects don't succeed in terms of the look, but the impact is lost with the way the narrative is crafted.
In terms of our introduction to this world, it doesn't feel fleshed out enough to give us a solid foundation for these characters before we get to the horror elements of the story.
Ji-young Yoo's Megan is probably the most interesting character of the bunch. She described herself as a clairvoyant and you feel her emotional journey more so than you do for even the lead character, Clover.
While Until Dawn feels dull in its story, the production design is still impressively alluring, building the creepy setting in a way that adds to the suspense.
To enjoy Until Dawn, it's best to not take things too seriously and not try to dissect every detail. It's more about enjoying the visuals and having a few laughs, with a light scare or two. There are a number of questions you'll likely have about why these horrors are even happen in the film, and the answers don't satisfy.
Until Dawn is a fine horror film, but much of it feels like we're just grazing the surface of the subject matter, when something more robust seemed possible.

HBO is between big Sunday night shows, with 'The Last of Us' Season 2 in the rearview and 'The Gilded Age' Season 3 still a few weeks away; in between the two shows, the premium cable network is airing a new three-part true crime documentary series. 'The Mortician' is a chilling series that uncovers the dark secrets behind a seemingly respectable, family-run funeral home. The Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena, California, was known for decency and propriety, but in the early 1980s, David Sconce, heir to the Lamb legacy, took control of the business and launched a disturbing campaign to boost profits by exploiting the dead in increasingly unethical and inhumane ways. Additionally, the series will explore the mortuary industry as a whole and illuminate what can happen behind closed doors. The HBO and Max series will feature an exclusive interview with Sconce, who was recently released from prison, plus commentary from Sconce's ex-wife Barbara Hunt; mortician Jolena Grande; mortuary owners Jay Brown and Elie Estephan; journalists Ashley Dunn and David Geary; Lamb Funeral Home victims; former employees and acquaintances of Sconce; and law enforcement and judicial officials. What time does 'The Mortician' come out on HBO and Max? 'The Mortician' comes out at 9 p.m. ET tonight, June 1, on HBO. The episode will release at the same time on HBO's Max streaming service. Why The Last of Us Changed Key Scene in Season 2 Finale

The Last of Us' Season 2 finale featured several shocking deaths. One of the most talked-about scenes from the finale occurred in the aquarium. Ellie holds two of Abby's friends, Owen and a pregnant Mel, at gunpoint. When Owen reaches for a gun, Ellie shoots him dead. However, the bullet also strikes Mel in the neck. A horrified Ellie holds Mel as she and the baby die. Owen and Mel are also killed in the video game. However, there is another death that the show's creators did not include in the The Last of Us Season 2 finale In the game, Ellie first kills Alice the dog upon entering the aquarium. When the video game shifts to Abby's POV, gamers can play as Abby with Alice by her side. Co-showrunner Craig Mazin joked that since he killed dogs in his previous show, Chernobyl, he couldn't do it again for The Last of Us. 'You get one dog-murdering episode a lifetime,' Mazin said in a press conference via GamesRadar+. 'There are two cardinal rules in Hollywood. One, don't spend your own money. Two, don't kill the dog.' The real reason behind eliminating the dog's death revolved around live-action violence and how it comes off much worse than animation. 'We had a situation where a number of horrible things were happening,' Mazin said. 'Plus, because it's live-action, the nature of violence becomes much more graphic. It's more graphic. Because it's not like there's an animation between you and it; it's people. And it's very disturbing.' Co-showrunner Neil Druckmann also noted that the show already had a run of violent scenes, including Ellie's near-lynching on Seraphite Island, Owen's murder, and Mel's death. 'In our conversation, we're like, this is probably one too many,' Druckmann said about cutting Alice's death from the show. The Last of Us Season 2 is now streaming on HBO Max. Should You Hold on to WBD Stock Despite its 5% Dip in YTD?

Warner Bros. Discovery WBD shares have lost 5% year to date, significantly underperforming the Zacks Consumer Discretionary sector's 25.1% growth and entertainment peers like Disney DIS, Paramount Global PARA and Netflix's NFLX return of 0.6%, 16.4% and 32.9%, respectively. This underperformance reflects investor concerns about the company's transformation amid a challenging media landscape, despite notable operational improvements in the first quarter of 2025. WBD's streaming business delivered encouraging results in the first quarter, adding 5.3 million subscribers to reach 122.3 million globally. The segment generated $339 million in adjusted EBITDA, positioning the company firmly on track to achieve at least $1.3 billion in streaming EBITDA for 2025. Max's content strategy continues resonating with audiences, evidenced by The White Lotus season three averaging more than 25 million global viewers per episode and The Pitt's successful debut with 12 million worldwide viewers across 15 episodes. Recent announcements highlight continued momentum, with The Last of Us attracting more than 90 million global viewers since season one concluded. The Studios segment showed resilience despite a lighter theatrical slate, with first-quarter adjusted EBITDA increasing 63% year over year to $259 million. A Minecraft Movie's success, grossing nearly $900 million globally, and Sinners' strong commercial and critical reception demonstrate the studio's content capabilities. However, the Global Linear Networks segment continues facing headwinds, with revenues declining 6% year over year due to continued cord-cutting pressures and domestic advertising challenges. Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. price-consensus-chart | Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. Quote WBD's robust content pipeline supports medium-term growth prospects. The highly anticipated Superman film will arrive on July 11, following strong trailer reception with more than 250 million views. Warner Bros. Television secured multiple renewals and new orders, including The Pitt season two and continued success with Abbott Elementary and The Voice. The upcoming Harry Potter series, scheduled for early 2027, represents a significant franchise opportunity for Max's subscriber product launches, including the Extra Member Add-On feature and Profile Transfer capabilities for Max, address password sharing while providing revenue upside. The WBD Storyverse advertising initiative and new solutions like NEO and DemoDirect aim to enhance advertiser value propositions amid challenging linear advertising markets. The company maintained its 3.8x net leverage ratio while repaying $2.2 billion in debt during the first quarter. With $4.0 billion cash on hand and $38.0 billion gross debt, WBD continues targeting 2.5-3x gross leverage. Free cash flow of $302 million in the first quarter, typically the seasonally weakest quarter, demonstrates improving cash generation capabilities. However, the elevated debt burden remains a concern for investors seeking growth acceleration. WBD merits a Hold rating despite the YTD decline. While streaming momentum and content quality improvements are encouraging, the company faces continued linear television headwinds and elevated leverage constraints. The stock's underperformance creates potential value opportunities, but investors should await clearer evidence of sustainable streaming profitability growth and debt reduction progress. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for WBD's 2025 revenues is pegged at $37.8 billion, indicating a decline of 3.88% on a year-over-year basis. The consensus mark is pegged at a loss of 16 cents per share, narrower than the loss of $4.62 in the year-ago the Zacks Earnings Calendar to stay ahead of market-making shareholders should maintain positions, while prospective investors might consider waiting for a more attractive entry point below current levels before initiating positions.
