RCMP widen search in P.E.I. car-shooting incident with underwater recovery team

Social Sharing P.E.I. RCMP say their Underwater Recovery Team has been added to the investigation into an incident in western P.E.I. last week that killed a man and injured a Summerside woman, who later died in hospital. In a news release Friday morning, RCMP said the team was deployed Thursday to search waters around the Island, including lakes, ponds, streams, and coastal areas. The team is a specialized RCMP unit made up of police officers who are trained divers. They focus on recovering evidence and bodies from aquatic environments, playing a crucial role in investigations involving submerged victims or evidence, the release said. Cpl. Ellen Peters, media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, said the Underwater Recovery Team expands the scope of the search. "We're using police dog services, drones and officers with boots on the ground to search the land areas, and now we are adding the ability to search lakes, ponds, streams and into the ocean if needed to find evidence that may contribute to this investigation," Peters was quoted as saying in the release. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, on Hackmatack Road in Urbainville, near Wellington. Police have said the targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of the road killed a 35-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the 2008 Toyota Corolla. The car then rolled over and hit a utility pole. A female passenger from Summerside, 50, was seriously injured in the crash and later died. Police have said they believe another vehicle was on Hackmatack Road at the time, and a perpetrator fled the scene. On Wednesday, RCMP released a photo of a car they say "may be connected" to the incident. The vehicle is a white, four-door 2007 Honda Accord, and could have the P.E.I. licence plate 202NX, the police force said. No arrests have been made. Police have not named a suspect in the case. RCMP have not identified either of the victims. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle to contact Prince District RCMP at 902-853-9300 or 902-436-9300. People who want to stay anonymous are asked to call P.E.I. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
