Two hospitalized following five-vehicle crash in Winnipeg

THE CANADIAN PRESS/David Lipnowski Winnipeg police are investigating a five-vehicle crash on a city street Monday morning that sent two people to hospital. According to police, the crash occurred in the westbound lanes of Ellice Avenue and Banning Street. Four vehicles were stopped at a red light when they were hit from behind by a 2017 Nissan Qashqai being driven by a man in his 70s. The driver, along with a female passenger were taken to hospital in unstable condition, but were later upgraded to stable. No other people with injuries needed hospitalization. Police said the force of the crash significantly damaged all vehicles, rendering them inoperable. The intersection was closed for a significant part of the day Monday as the traffic unit investigated. No arrests have been made. Two hospitalized following shooting in Winnipeg: police

THE CANADIAN PRESS/David Lipnowski Winnipeg police are investigating after two people, including a 16-year-old male, were shot on Ellice Avenue Tuesday afternoon near a hotel where wildfire evacuees have been staying. According to police, officers were called to the 1800 block of Ellice Avenue at 2:42 p.m. When they arrived, they found two males, a 16-year-old and 18-year-old, suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims remains in unstable condition and is awaiting surgery, while the second has been upgraded to stable condition. Police say the injuries are not life-threatening. No arrests have been made. Police did not say if the people shot were wildfire evacuees, but said safety in and around evacuation centres and temporary residences is important for communities. 'Our police liaison teams are visiting evacuation centres throughout the city to ensure everyone feels safe and supported,' police said in a statement. 'We are working closely with community partners, including NGOs (non-government organizations) and service providers to promote a safe environment for thousands of evacuees now staying in our city.'
